So I found a piece of rock in a friends yard that looked like it would make a good sharpening stone, cut it to shape and flattened it and dressed it down into a sharpening stone.

Quartzite makes a great sharpening stone. It’s a solid rock so no fracturing and it’s incredibly hard(7 on the mohs hardness scale) so it will do a wide variety of knives axes and chisels. I’ve been making and testing rocks for two years and it’s by far my favourite rock to use

Where do you find rocks? Like how can you tell where good rocks will be?

Looks good do one side at maybe 36 grit and the other at say 120? Fun to try and maybe one day you will find one that works pretty damn good mate. In the old days the tested until they found out what worked

I keep going until the sound changes then just add more grinding powder. Also I clean the glass with glass cleaner and Scott towels.

yes, and it doesn't really make sense, but its fun and I guess that's all that matters. this stone works pretty well with a 36 grit surface, and even better on softer steels. might make a really good axe or machete stone.

You can make a good abrasive by colecting the watery sand. Let dry the water and there you are! You'll got good quality abrasive sand. May be for polishing?

Can you sharpen plane blades using only glass and silicon carbide powder?
@joecalton1449
@joecalton1449 Жыл бұрын
i dont think so. it would be pretty tough to keep the blade on the grains of grit without them moving out from under the blade I would think

Been using slates for a long time. The raw ones are rough, but over time they become so fine. The silicone carbide you wasted on the slate would have made a better stone if you mixed it with epoxy and cast it.

That noise from you moving the tripod around was like nails on a chalkboard. hopefully next time everything will be in place so it doesn't distract from what you are trying to film.

Hi just wanted to ask you the harder is the slate the higher is the grit or the harder is the slate the grit is lower ?
@joecalton1449

I believe grit rating has more to do with the size of the scratches that the stone produces, and not the hardness of the stone.

So what stones can be made into a whetstone? I want to go find some wild rock and make some whetstones for myself. Where can you find the type of rock that’s good for this purpose?

I learn something new and/or gain a new perspective with each video you post. Thank you. www.ragweedforge.com/viking_whetstones_arkansas.jpg shows some recreations of "viking age" pendant stones though the guy who runs the website is not currently taking orders. A good size to experiment with and if it isn't a great stone then one could gift/sell it as an art piece.

Something you might want to try is a ceramic floor tile. These are a bitch to flatten (either remove the glazing or flatten the back side) but they work remarkably well.

I’ve been wondering this same thing. So marble or granite are good whetstones?
@adrianguzman47
@adrianguzman47 4 жыл бұрын
@@longlimboy I´ve been doing some atempts with countertops, marble or granite forget about it, quartz counter top is the way to go, is close to 8-10 k and fast cutting, and realy flat. I also tried with several forms of slate from my country, green, black, white, purple, brown, blue slate from national suppliers (México) some of those work realy good as well. just all those are realy fine more of a polishing stone. Even basaltic rock could work if enough quartz content is in. (sorry if my english is rubbish, second language)
