I'm actually very happy to see someone use a grain to grain method with the bags. It's hard to find a video that explains grain to grain using spawn bags. Everyone else is doing liquid culture inoculation, but honestly there are so many videos of LC and hardly any of G2G using spawn. Thanks 🙏🏼

@@jordanmercier3616 you’re going to end up melting the spawn bag. The spawn bag starts to melt around 250F. You want to sterilize the bag around 212F for 2 hours or 15 PSI. More heat will melt it.

@@BoomerShroomer oh no, I'm saying you can use a 5 gallon bucket lid on top of your bags to keep them from sealing the vent port on your PC, the plastic the bucket is made of won't melt in your PC, not to cook grains at 500F. It won't rust that's all.

Many years ago (1976) I created a plastic-enclosed environment to transfer spore and had a can of disinfectant and a burning candle inside to sterilize my transfer tool. When I sprayed the disinfectant to sterilize the air the enclosure exploded in my face, scorching my eyebrows and completely melting the enclosure. Fun times.

Might have been good to inoculate the three bags with an equal volume of liquid culture. This could remove any slight edge introduced by accidentally giving one of the bags slightly more or slightly less of the pre-colonized grain. Regardless, really fun experiment! :) Testing different ratios and combinations of these and other components would be fun too!

One thing to mention is the cost. 50lb bags of milo and millet average around d $50. Whereas the whole oats are $15. It’s also easier to find oats pretty much year round. But I do agree that the smaller size of the milo(sorghum) and millet do allow for more inoculation points and more than likely faster colonization.
@BoomerShroomer
@BoomerShroomer 3 жыл бұрын
The local feed store where I live sells 50 pound bags of milo for about 25 bucks and the whole oat is about 12 bucks per 50 pounds. Maybe you can find it cheaper at a farm store or feed store in your area. I usually do a mix of milo and whole oat. I am making a new spawn bag video to show my go to recipe after using it for 6 months now.

a couple questions: 1. what kind of sealer do you have? I have a Foodsaver, but have not yet used it. 2. do you make your own spawn bags? I see yours have AE patches? If i were to make my own, could you recommend a specific bag to purchase? 3. when you sterilize, you just fold the top over to close it off, and only open it when G2Ging? Then you seal (without vacuum) after you've inoculated them? Thanks for your videos, they're very helpful! I look forward to your response!

Hey Ashley, now that you are doing liquid culture, have you considered repeating this experiment? I think the amount of spawn/LD added to each bag should be more precisely dosed to get the most empirical results. Also, the size of the grain create a significant difference between the empty space in the give volume. Seems like milo creates a sweet spot regarding the space the mycelium has to grow verses air exchange. There might be other factors involved, but my hunch is that each species of fungus might slightly prefer different grain sizes (and obviously each grain type or mix of grain/sawdust/wood species also play a factor in rate and vigor of growth). I wonder if rate of growth impacts quality/quantity of fruits. Have you read anything about this?

@@rogerrabt Thanks for that tip. My first bag I did mix up at about 20% and it took off once I did that. I just inoculated another bag and mixed it up at about 10% because the mycelium was in the center of grains and by mixing it the outside part started colonizing.

Hello, good explanation. A question that could be used as a filter to make these Mushbang bags (the bags you use for mushroom crops) at home or DIY.
