The Dado is a simple joint that is often over thought and made to be complicated. In all honesty, it is simple and can often be cut by hand faster thAn any dado stack can be put into a table saw.
This Hand Tool cut joint is made with a Hand Saw, Chisel and Hand router. with just a simple blade I can show you How to make a joint that can last a lifetime.

small tip for not blowing through the narrow far wall - you can attach a block of wood to that section so that it is supported - I use this when Im making blind dovetails with a very thin piece at the back, I clamp a block of wood so that thin piece does not blow out ... CHEERS for the video :)

Like I say. if you just need to do one. Hand tools are almost always faster, but when you need to do a bunch they can not hold a candle to the speed of power. Thanks John!

The whole time you were using the hand router I was waiting for it to blow straight through, very tense moment, haha! Great tutorial as always mate

I spent the first 3 minutes of this video convinced you had forgotten you were doing a stopped dado and gone all the way across......but its just the way the dark/light grain blend into on another....My bad. Great tutorial though. :-)

My Heart missed a beat when you pushed the Router through for the second time.. It looked like it had some force / momentum and I just saw it crashing through your 'Stop' Sigh of relief when I was 'Mistaken'. :D

+Peter Compton that video angle was a poor one and is hard to show force. The blade was actually well back from the edge. But once again there is nothing that substitutes being there in person.

thank you still to show us how to work with hand tools. For me, it seems to me that it is impossible for me to do a job as precise as that only with handtools . I am impressed by such an amount of precision. Thank you. Laurent.

No idea if youre still monitoring this but this is awesome. Is there an alternative for getting a flush bottom if we don't have a router plane?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 3 жыл бұрын
You can always make a router plane. They're relatively quick to make. Or even faster you can make a poor man's router. Paul sellers has a good video on that one. But even without those you can use a chisel bevel down and do it by eye just not quite as accurate. But it works.

You can do it with just the chisels, but you’ll have to be careful to keep the bottom of the dado flat.

I wonder how does a 8" - 12" stopped dado work in this case? I see how easy it is with a saw on a narrow piece, but dados for bookshelves or cabinets are not as simple. I've resorted to chopping them out like a wide mortice, then using a routing plane to smooth the bottom. Is there a faster way?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 3 жыл бұрын
I do it the exact same way for longer ones. if you want to see a demonstration of a longer one you should look up the video on making sliding dovetails. I have one on there where I'll do a 13-in stopped sliding dovetail. With hand tools the fastest way is just to carve it out with a bench chisel. But that takes a lot of skill.
