Continuing with my chisels are awesome theme this week I'm cutting a blind dado using a saw to cut the extents and a chisel to hog out and refine the floor of the dado. Specifically I want to show how to use a chisel bevel down to get into tight areas and how you can steer the cut giving you unparalleled control over the cut unlike any other tool.
Thanks to all my Patrons who support the show and send in questions and things for me to cover. If interested in supporting the show then visit www.patreon.com/renaissancewoodworker. Every little bit helps and is greatly appreciated. Or if you are ready to take your hand tool skills to the next level, considering joining The Hand Tool School for a structured curriculum designed to make you a better woodworker.

After a few years buying machinery I am, as could be predicted, slowly (snail pace...!) transitioning into more handtools woodworking. There are benefits to both ways, and it really helps being able to resaw and thickness material on machines, but after that it's more satisfying to do the finer tasks by hand.

I would rather know how to do it, and not need to. Than need to do it and not know how. Thanks Shannon

thank you for this lesson, this makes you feel the real power of handtool woodworking. A question outside the argument, is there a specific reason for the candle?

ambience? Not really, I just like it and its kind of a routine that puts me into the shop frame of mind.

But I had to think.. Why was he holding the chisel right handed. I guess it was for the camera. And I'm sure Shannon will say. It helps to be able to use both hands 😎

I switch hands constantly these days. Sometimes it is for the camera but mostly its because the situation demands it.

Just a thought: how about using a sharpening as support for the chisel instead of your hand (meat clamp)?

so much work, so much time consuming and you do not learn new skill so yours woodworking level does not increase

What sort of uses are there for blind dado? (I'm utterly new to all of this).

Bookcase shelves. It looks a lot neater than having the dado come all the way through.

any situation where the male part of the joint doesn't go all the way through the female part of the joint. Shelves that don't extend to the front of the case for example. A leg in a tripod table.

If I'm no mistaken, this is indeed poplar. I think he mentioned that in some point of the video

Is there any danger you'll wear the teeth at the toe prematurely? And is this even a problem?

every time we pick up a tool we "risk" dulling the edge. That's why we sharpen. Part of the gig. Seriously use a handsaw a few thousands times in a normal cutting action and count the number of times you use the front 5 teeth. I'll bet its zero.
