Bob shows you how to modify and install a new PVC toilet flange into a 4-inch 90 degree copper drain pipe. This was probably the worst find ever as far as finding poorly done projects by other people. This short video is packed full of great tips and tricks on how to retrofit the flange as well as how to safely cut it.
As with all of my videos, I am not responsible for any failures, leaks, injuries, death, etc. caused due to following my advice. Each job is different and often requires different methods. Inspect your jobs closely and ensure that the tips you learn from me are going to work with your project.

Nice video Bob! It will help some folks and it's a 1000 times better that you found it. However... An Oatey representative told me this model of retrofit PVC toilet flange is not approved for 3" or 4" copper drain pipe. I get that the compression feature of this retrofit flange could not be used (twisting the flange after inserted into drain pipe) because of the elbow being up too high / not enough vertical drop but it is still not recommended even with plenty of vertical drop. I assume the reason they don't want anyone using this on a copper pipe is because copper is a relatively soft and malleable metal that can be deformed by the dense rubber compression ring on this type of flange. It will probably be okay but apparently this seal can become unreliable over time with copper DWV. I found 3 solutions that are code compliant in most areas of the US: 1. Best practice if you have the experience and time is to do it like they used to... solder on a brass flange (an old one can be reused if de-soldered and cleaned to bare metal) 2. Use a Sioux Chief "PushTite" flange that uses a elastomer gasket that is squishy and less dense than the Oatey rubber compression type flange. 3. Cut out some of the copper pipe below the floor, install a PVC flange and short section of PVC pipe (drop and/or elbow) and then use a specialty no hub coupling, like the Mission CK33, that is intended for joining large diameter copper drain pipe to PVC or cast iron. Regular no hub couplings found at retail stores aren't quite the right size for the thin walled copper pipe and could also deform the pipe.

I’m in a similar situation. Not knowing the size or material of the pipe, I bought the 3 and 4” flanges. I wasn’t sure if this flange would work for copper. Thanks for the tip 👍🏼

this is awesome! im using 1/4 inch diameter tap cons and a 3/16 inch bit. is that okay?

Tap cons are for concrete are you putting your flange into concrete if so run a piece of stranded wire just electrical wire but not the solid kind down into the hole before you put the screw in that’ll bind around the screw and make it a tighter fit. If you’re putting this into Wood I would use a contractor grade stainless steel screw this way it doesn’t rot and rust away on you.
