The basics of how to make a toothbrush, or Amish knot rug using recycled bedsheets. These are machine wash and dry. They last for 20-30 years. They make great gifts! Also check my video on how to rip the sheets to prepare for the rug.

This is my first comment ever on KZfaq, even though I have watched quite a few videos, and how to´s. But this is the one that deserves the biggest compliment of all. I watched this only once, went out to make myself a needle, and left the house to meet some friends and do crafting. It is so well explained and so well shown that I started and finished a doormat in thick jute string the same afternoon. The adding on of new pieces can be done by adding to the runner and then use that when the string in the needle runs short. The unused last end can be added to the runner then. It looks great and I was never in doubt what to do. Thanks so much for this video!

Also, this is the first video I've seen on how to make your own needle. Yesterday I found a needle online that I could purchase. I'm glad I didn't order it. Yours looks much user friendly and easy to make. I also love your idea of using a bed sheet instead of having to save up a bunch of t-shirt strips over time. Hi, I realized I didn't mention....you should use a cotton based used sheet. I have found the micro-fiber, thin sheets hard to rip apart, and don't have girth to hold up for a thick rug.

+Mom Eberhard Hi. I enjoyed your tutorial. About how many sheets does it take to make a rug?
@momeberhard5265
@momeberhard5265 8 жыл бұрын
+margaret johnson I never actually calculated, as I just pull my colors from my collection and use how much I have. It depends on the size of the sheets, if they are single, full, queen or king. But say you have the smallest which is twin - 5 of them would make a 44 x 33 rug, which is pretty big, and will weigh about 5 pounds.
@motherpops
@motherpops 7 жыл бұрын
so five pounds of fabric to atart with would give you all that you need then yes?
@momeberhard5265
@momeberhard5265 7 жыл бұрын
It depends on the size you want to make, but 5 pounds of fabric will give you a pretty good size rug. Definitely enough to make a rug. If it is your first rug, plan on making a smaller rug to get your natural tightness of tugging. Remember in the video, I said the first rug will probably not look so good. That is because you will be learning to tug the knots consistently. So make a little rug until you get the "feel" of the process, and then use the remaining fabric to make your good rug.

Wow, this was a great tutorial. I made my needle and am just gathering information now to make my first rug, which will be from gazillions of jeans. I know, not a great way to start, but it's what I have. I didn't see anyone else comment on the increase method you use, I guess I'm slow, but was unable to discern between the runner and the working piece, because they were the same color. I was having a hard time trying to understand where the needle goes for those all important increase stitches. And what sets your instructions apart from others I have seen is that very thing: making a new hole between the runner and working piece, and not increasing in the same hole. Is there a way to help me understand where to make that hole?

Well if this is the clearest tutorial on KZfaq then I’m in trouble. When she says “where’s your next stitch?” I never had the spot correct. Not once. I knit, crochet, embroider, never had a class learned from books and KZfaq. But this, this may the old time homey craft I never get to do. I’ll have to rely on bought rugs that come apart when washed. 😭

I thought you just used the left over part of the first string and buried it as you went, but even when you went to the piece farther along, it had an extra string that you were working over. So you add onto this extra one as you go the same as you do the working string, right? Why is it needed except for adding an extra source of connection around the corners? Would you need it even if you were making a square rug? I have my sheets to cut up and made my needle, but I want to have this part cleared up. Thanks for the video!

+catherine carpeaux I found the T-shirt stretch actually made it harder for me to keep it flat, but it can be done. I used a hack saw to cut the plastic toothbrush, and a metal file to make the point, and a drill to make the hole bigger.

I usually change the runner color also. I change it whenever the outer color (the one with the needle) runs out. I try to to not have both knots in the same spot, but very close to each other.

Do you continue to add to the tail or does it eventually get worked into the rug?
@momeberhard5265
@momeberhard5265 7 жыл бұрын
If you mean the Runner as the Tail, you continue to add to it. When you are done with the rug, you use it to tie off the end fabric, and them work the end of the fabric, and tail into the weave of the rug on the backside.

How long does such a rug lasts, do you know? Eventually, can we wash them and put them in a washing machine without breaking the motor of the machine or do they have to be sent to the cleaner?? Thank you so much for such a nice explanation of this traditional way of using fabrics. I have a lot of used sheets that I still keep but now, I know how I will use them. Such a nice way to recycle too!!
@momeberhard5265
@momeberhard5265 7 жыл бұрын
I have had people in their 60's tell me they still have "Grandma's rugs" still in use, and still being washed. So they are very long lasting, as they don't unravel, and unlike braided rugs that are sewed together, there are no strings to break. I have a front loader, high efficiency washer. I have an 8 foot long rug that is 10 lbs dry weight, and it goes through beautifully. That rug is already over 3 years old, and gets washed regularly. If you are afraid of a rug being too much, or throwing your machine off balance...go to a laundry mat and use their big boy machines. I use oxi-cleaner with detergent, but my friend who has many pets uses bleach and detergent, with good results also. It does take a long time to dry them in the dryer, but I throw my smaller ones over the banister of the porch until they are almost dry, then put them flat on the floor to finish drying.

One thing I was wondering however, was do the sheets have to be 100% cotton as these can be very hard to find nowadays and cotton fabric is expensive. It depends on how you want the stripes to lay, horizontally or vertically. If you want the rug to have horizontal stripes, the first row would be the longer side. If you want stripes to run vertically, you would make the first row the smaller side.

If so could you give some approximate lengths for different sized rugs. I think you called it the runner. Thank you. I also subscribed to your channel
@momeberhard5265
@momeberhard5265 8 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter the length of the "runner", just so it is long enough to step on to create the tension in the beginning. As for latter on, it also will not matter, as you can add on. Or if you are changing color, and you want the runner to "match" the outer color...just cut it, and put a slit in it and change it to the next color. I just happen to work with whatever the length of sheet I am working with.

@momeberhard5265
@momeberhard5265 7 жыл бұрын
I suppose you could. Plarn can be used in almost any way other fibers can be. I tend to pull my cotton strips so tightly though, I don't know if the plastic would hold up to it. Check my other videos, as there is a way to "weave" plastic bags, either in a oval or into rectangular rugs which may suit you. But if you try this with plarn, let me know how it works out, and how wide of a strip you end up cutting the plarn into to give you a substantial rug. Thanks for pondering out loud!

The "runner" is the strip of fabric you start wrapping the knots around. There is always a "runner" between the last row and the next knot. It adds girth to the rug, and it can be uses to tighten and straighten the rows of knots. You continue to add fabric to the "runner" just as you do the fabric that you are making knots with. In the end, you knot the runner to the outside fabric, and weave the loose ends into the bottom of the rug.

can you use knit? I was trying it since I was gifted so much. this is my first rug and it is now ruffling. how can I fix it?
@momeberhard5265
@momeberhard5265 6 жыл бұрын
I dont' use knit, because of the stretch. It makes it too hard to gauge the tension. That is probably why it is ruffling. If you have lots of knits to use, make a cotton rug first, to learn consistency on pulling the knots, and how to add to make things flat, and then try the knits. They will always be a challenge.

@@momeberhard5265 Thanks so much! The fog is slowly lifting. Right now accumulating stash, and planning my needle making craft. I was wondering: how about plastic cooking utensils (like ladles and spatuals) from the dollar store that have those long holes in them to hang from a rack? I tend to make a really tightly knotted rug, so a handle like what you describe would be too thick for me to get through the previous row. I sometimes have a tight fit, especially when I add a knot on the curves just getting a toothbrush through.
