In this video I make a whistling spinning top out of basswood and brass. In order for this to work you need the top to spin really fast. So an acceleration handle mechanism is essential.
In mr David Reed Smith's site I found really useful info on how to make it, in this link: tinyurl.com/2fxwkm59
Tools and materials I propose:
Lathe: amzn.to/2yq4bMI
Wood turning tools set: amzn.to/2pH5K59
Bandsaw: amzn.to/2pHj49v
Chuck kit: amzn.to/2NLQG55
Tormek T8 Sharpening System: amzn.to/334j2Mz
Tormek Woodturner’s Kit: amzn.to/3w11xcs
Drill press: amzn.to/2pJaAPo
No4 hand plane: amzn.to/2CnmTrZ
Hole saw: amzn.to/2C0WdND
Grinder sanding disc adapter: amzn.to/2PvV6cv
Mini machinist’s lathe: amzn.to/3hR3wJT
Mineral oil: amzn.to/2CrXeP7
Small files set: amzn.to/2BEAxpm

As a child I had a top like this and I adored the sounds it made and played with it constantly - it mysteriously disappeared one day! I like this build a lot, especially the taper on the handle. Great job Dimitris; thanks for being the most consistently enjoyable channel on KZfaq.

Dude, I had a similar experience. I got one from a fieldtrip from my childhood. They were from and indigenous people called Aeta/Ita. They are very good with their hands and that top blew my young mind back then, it still does when I think about it. I would love to get one of those tops again.

@@ScrapwoodCity🔴 What Is Islam? 🔴 Islam is not just another religion. 🔵 It is the same message preached by Moses, Jesus and Abraham. 🔴 Islam literally means ‘submission to God’ and it teaches us to have a direct relationship with God. 🔵 It reminds us that since God created us, no one should be worshipped except God alone. 🔴 It also teaches that God is nothing like a human being or like anything that we can imagine. 🌍 The concept of God is summarized in the Quran as: 📖 { “Say, He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He does not give birth, nor was He born, and there is nothing like Him.”} (Quran 112:1-4) 📚 🔴 Becoming a Muslim is not turning your back to Jesus. 🔵 Rather it’s going back to the original teachings of Jesus and obeying him. How did you know in advance that it would whistle? Does it work with one or three holes? How do you determine the wall thickness for the whistle? Or does any cavity with a hole that air moves past make a sound?
@carlpeberdy9086
@carlpeberdy9086 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for such an interesting and thorough video! Is there any reason for the multiple holes? As far as I understand having more holes would make the pitch higher, and only one should be necessary to create a tone, but perhaps it's more likely that one will sound if there is more than one. And have you tried multiple chambers to make chords?
@ScrapwoodCity
@ScrapwoodCity 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I guess your questions are pretty logical and would be really cool to experiment on them. I just went for the two wholes so I could keep things more balanced and symmetrical. I think symmetry works better with spinning tops most times.

@@ScrapwoodCity That makes sense! I must try find some more examples and experiment myself - I think there could be some interesting musical/sound effects to be had, thanks once again.

Is the size of the holes and the location of the holes from the end of importance? I can see where the 45 degrees is important to catch the air

Cut the stem off 3/8" from top of handle , it will wobble less , when turning and sanding , especially resinous woods like pines , cedar , yew and exotics , wear an M -95 dust mask to protect you lungs , and wear a face shield , the ends of the handles can be tapered with a 3/8" spindle detail gouge , and linseed , and Danish oil finishes penetrate and harden , and a bees wax , mineral oil paste gives a more durable finish , and is a child safe , edible finish , and a dust extractor helps keep fine dust from becoming airborne

For your next build , lay out your design , lay out the vent holes to be in the center of rim , with less thickness, with more taper to base of spindle , and the tip . Add some color , with brush tip markers , add some details with a chatter tool , or a Sorby Decorating Elf tool . If you are turning the handle , joint the edges and omit planing the faces , they will get turned off anyway . Use a dense hardwood for the spinning tip and use the heel of skew when tapering with planing cuts , less chance of a catch

I think I will make one but use pex water pipe in the handle as a bushing to reduce friction while pulling the string. It works good on toy cars so the axle turns better and pex is cheap.
