This is actually simple! Last "simple" box video I watched required a table saw, a router, and all sorts of fancy techniques with them - this is much better for a beginner.

Seriously….., they all do!! When I got started in all this I got so frustrated with this as well. I couldn’t learn much because I didn’t have the “right things”. I think most people just focus on showing off what they can do versus actually teaching. And that actually goes for many things here on KZfaq. Nothing wrong with that, though.

My "top" was a DIY video where the guy said "and now we just need to weld these pieces together" and pulls out argon welding machine. And the part itself is something you could by for 10 bucks MAX at the home depot (Leroy Merlin)

I had the same reaction - thank God, no table saw! I don't know why so many videos labeled "simple woodworking" think you need the type of shop that a master carpenter has. Thank you for making this video and for keeping it simple. I am fairly new to woodworking and I do think that learning how to make wooden boxes is one of the best ways to start learning about woodworking. Almost all of the other videos on building a "simple" wooden box involve using a table saw, a router, a miter saw, and other tools. I have learned how to use my new miter saw, but I am not ready to invest in a table saw or a router yet. Your video - showing the basics of box building - and doing it with no expensive power tools - is great. I have subscribed.

Kudos!!! 👍!! Excellent video!!! I worked with some "kids" (15-19), a while back. Great bunch. I flippantly said, "Well, need a wooden box for this, now...". ( Tray sized, like 18x24, 4" sides.. your same box, just two bottom boards wide...lol). Stuff was available....they were suprised Mr.J could just "Whip up a box... just like that, Dude!". Lol! I'm glad I know how to nail some boards together, and if need be, I can also pick up a rock for a hammer!! 😂.

If ur going to stain it I would use pine or somthing with some nice grain in it. If your going to paint it then possibly Poplar like I did.

Am boxes using masonite as base with half inch sides my problem is I measure check then cut the four sides to fit masonite bottom on top of square frame, and it always either too small or too big. They are only beginners boxes to put tools in but it's frustrating it's never right. Too big I put the bottom and cut the fraction off and file smooth. Too small I have to recut more masonite. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong. Ps I pretrial and screw sides and nail bottom only because that all I had.

try measuring and cutting the two long sides first. then set them in place or nail/screw them in place. then measure for the two short sides. it is always going to be very hard to measure and cut all four sides right away. keep trying you will get it.

How did you meashure the end pieces; they obviouisly have to be wider than the the bottom base piece?

It’s the width of the bottom piece plus a the thickness of the wood you used on each side

i would say draw your lines as much as possible and check often to see your on line. Also make sure to hold and use the saw properly. I have a video on my channel on that topic or just youtube it and see what comes up for the type of saw your using. Like always though you will get better with time. Keep at it.

try using the entire length of the blade when you cut. also stand as straight to your cut as you can. finally just practice practice practice.

A sawzall will be tough to make equal and straigh cuts. For a shelf you would just nail and or glue a piece in where ever you want it using the inside measurements if your box.

I’m not great at carving but once you have the heart I would glue it on with wood glue

are butt joints quite weak in strength? nailing into the wood grain?

depends on the wood and the grain where your nailing. for the purpose of a box like this it will be fine. glue would also make it stronger however glue on end joints also isnt the best.

How would you make a 11.5x11.5x11.5 box with a lid to use as an urn? The niche it is going to fit into is 12x12x12. I cannot find one to buy that is that size so I am going to make it. Also what would would you suggest? Odd request I know. It is my request to be buried with my dogs ashes hence why a normal urn will not work for me. Thank you for the help

U just have to do the same process but with your dimensions and if it’s for ashes and will prolly never be opened then I would just cut a piece for the lid that is the size of the box and nail it on. Also if it’s for ashes I would glue it all as well as nailing so that it is air tight

I used poplar just because I had it but if your buying wood I would get a soft wood probability pine. If you did want to go hard wood tho you can but I still wouldn’t use poplar.

Hi David, Every year since my children were born I would do a Christmas eve (cardboard) box filled with goodies, pjs and a new Christmas ornament, this year my oldest daughter is moving out and will have her own tree and so I would like to make a simple keepsake box that she can take with her that will have all the ornaments she's collected throughout the years. I would like to make 4 in total (I still have three babies at home) youngest being 6 so I have many many more years of xmas boxes to fill lol. I would like to make the other three boxes as a repeated personal xmas eve box instead of buying a new cardboard one every year, and then same plan they take that box with them when they move out. My idea for size is 16''L x 12"W x 4"H (outside box measurements) Could you please help me figure out the right size cuts and what wood and thickness I need to make the boxes?? I have never made a box before and have no idea what I'm doing but I found your video pretty easy to follow, and I think I can do this with your help. Thank you for your time Kay

I would use d4s (dressed four sides ) like I did. It's 3/4" thick. So make the two long sides 16 x 4. Make the short sides 10 1/2 x 4. Make the bottom 10 1/2 x 14 1/2. If you do that you will end up with the dimensions you specifyed.

I always hide the ends with the front and back, hiding the end grain.

Cut a 3/8 inch slot into the sides and ends with a 11/32 inch tongue. When you glue the sides together the bottom can float freely without being attached to anything.

cut a piece to the overall dimensions of your box. then nail some small strips, maybe 1/2 x 1/2 on the bottom to fit the inner dimensions of your box opening to hold it centered in place. add a handle.

Could you do a hinged lid? Do you have to adjust the size of the lid for clearance when the lid is lifted?
