From www.kevincaron.com - Artist Kevin Caron explains how to make adjustable legs for a table or anything else ....
A viewer, James, had asked for a how-to video about making adjustable legs that can be set at the height you want, adjusted for leveling, and collapsed as needed.
Caron shows a piece of 1/2" square tubing and a piece of 1/2" solid metal rod that can slip inside the square tubing. The square tubing is the fixed part that is welded or otherwise permanently affixed to the table. The round steel rod is the adjustable leg. You also need a nut and a bolt.
Drill a hole in your fixed leg to fit your bolt or screw. Caron likes a bolt because you can tighten it with a wrench. You can also just weld a wrench or a small piece of stock to the head of the bolt and use it as a thumbscrew.
Just weld the nut on the outside of the leg being VERY careful to center the nut over the hole. The easiest way to do that is to put the nut on the bolt, letting the threads of the bolt stick through about a quarter inch. Stick the short end of the bolt into the hole. That'll keep it centered.
Now it's time to get out your welder - TIG, MIG, stick, oxygen-acetylene, whatever - and weld that nut on.
Caron is using the AHP AlphaTIG 200X set at about 72 amps. He clamps the square tubing into a drill press vise that he clamps to the table. Next he comes in with some filler rod and gets a tack on one side, then on the other.
Then Caron cools it off by simply running some water over it so he can get that bolt out - he doesn't want to weld the bolt into the nut. He screws the bolt all the way out and welds the nut all the way around, then lets it cool down.
If you have a tap-and-die set, use the right size tap to clean up the threads - after all, it was red hot from welding.
With the nut on the fixed leg, slide the moveable part inside the leg to where you want it, then screw in the bolt.
If the leg isn't holding tight enough, note the mark where you have been screwing the bolt into the moveable leg. Then drill a small dimple into the moveable leg. Don't drill all the way through, which would weaken the leg. The dimple just needs to be a little bigger than the diameter of the end of the bolt to hold the leg tighter so it doesn't slip.
There's no advantage or difference using a square and a round piece of steel. You can use two pieces of square or two pieces of round, too.
Caron is ready to go back to work, so you can take a moment to click on the "subscribe" button to be the first to see his newest how-to videos when they are uploaded on Wednesday mornings. Then you can head to www.kevincaron.com to see more how-to videos.
Well, you might want to wait one more moment to see Caron address his fans .... (no, he didn't know he was being videotaped) ....

AWESOME! Kevin, you made the video! It was me, James who requested the, "how to"...for this video. I do realize there are tons of people out there that already knew how to do this, but I was unsure. Thanks for demonstrating this! I am obviously new to welding, so I greatly appreciate you taking the time to make this happen!James

very cool vid i am making a fold down work table for one of my students, went over seas and came back without use of some parts, lives in a very small house , garage was turned into a tv room, he has no room but wants to work on things and it's good for his brain to rewire , figuring out things and trying to regain movement i was going to make triangles on hinges that would fold under the table but this gave me another idea very good timing that i found this at this time thanks

Kevin If you drill into the corner of the tubing, then welc the nut, the bolt then pushes the rod into the opposite corner and centers and stabilizes the rod better. I actually grind a flat spot for the nut for ease of welding John

That's cool, although I was picturing something big and heavy like your welding table. I think you did this video before, but I really like the idea of putting trailer balls on the bottom of the legs of something like a welding table, with a big nut for them to screw in and out, to adjust and level the table.

Linked to this - Many folks fail to see the benefits of a three legged table / stand / stool etc in that wherever you put it down (within reason!) is that it doesn't rock it is always stable. (It might not have a level surface but it will be stable) It can however be levelled in exactly the same way as you have demonstrated.

another solution would be a all thread rod with a washer and nut at the top where the leg ends. a pad welded at the botton of the all thread to give it some area do it wont sink into the ground . then adjust hte height of the leg by turning the nut . advantage here is the all thead can be removed to transportation if needed.

Grinding a point on the bolt greatly increases the holding strength of the bolt.Also just a little trivia. What's the difference between a bolt and screw?It can be the same part. Technically it's a threaded fastener. The application determines whether it's a screw or bolt.A fastener that threads into a nut is called a bolt. If it is threaded into a fixture or machine it's called a screw.

I am looking to make an adjustable laptop table. This is a good idea. I do not have any welding experience so it got me thinking about 2 metal pieces that already have holes and using a bolt/nut combo. Having two square pieces where one fits in the other... My only problem is not sure how to connect the legs to the actual wood if I'm not a welder or carpenter. Suggestions?
@KevincaronSculpture
@KevincaronSculpture 3 жыл бұрын
If you have a drill and bits you can just drill through the metal and use wood screws to attach them together. Or use adhesive of some kind and glue the wood to the metal.

Can we use a bigger hole to lock using a rod instead of a tiny screw. I'm designing an adjustable height desk. Most of the resources suggest Crank mechanism. But I want to go for something cheap. Any suggestions? Would highly appreciate if you could reply. I'm boiling my head.

Of course you can use pins or rods to stop the legs in place. Just make sure they are inserted in such a way that they won't catch your leg as you move around the table.

cool idea. downside is that when we have a table out in the field, it gets turned into an anvil pretty quickly. would need something sturdier for that application. 3/4" allthread with a nut welded to the bottom of the table legs?

Sure, start at 28 inches and just slide up from there. Or make a 3-section extension. Instead of set screws you would use removable quick disconnect pins. Or instead of pins use all thread on the top section and a pipe with a nut welded inside to take fit the all-thread. Just lift one side of the table and unscrew the leg to the correct length. Hope this helps, thank you for watching and posting.

Kevin Caron, Artist the square tube that is going to slide up inside of the other Square tube you would take a grinding disc make a slight Groove up the square tubing that is going inside the other square tubing exactly we're the seam is going to hit on the Square Tubing that is going up inside of the outer square tubing

Besides grinding a relief in the sliding portion of the leg, I have in the past worked up an "extended handle/ holder" for a cold chisel and removed that weld burr from as much as 30 inche long bench legs. If you attack the problem from both ends of the tube, your extension with tool attached needs to be about 20 inches so you can reach the middle of the tube while still having enough handle to hold firmly while striking. Attaching this tool to an air chisel might also work a bit faster if you have alot of pieces to do. I had only 6 legs to do so I did them by hand. However, if you are doing a large volume of parts you would be better of to just get Drawn Over Mandrel (DOM)tube which has the weld burr removed already. The difference in price for DOM is well worth it from a time saving point of view and reflected in the quality of the finished product. Relief grooves on a chair or table leg may pass for field expedience, like a "Mc Gyver" move to get you out of trouble or overcome a problem on a time sensitve job and then correct it later. But to do it and say "that's fine!" is bush league, hack work! Pride in your work is pride in yourself! Hope this helps someone!
