Thank you for your sharing, can we use the barrel with the 1st method (smaller wire)? and for the float stop, does a split sinker will work?

The sinker is only to hold the bait in a current, I don’t know of any split sinkers heavy enough to work

For the second type of wire leader how often will you replace it?

For single strand wire I replaced after every catch or if I see a kink in it. For the cable I normally don’t replace it unless I lose it in a snag. That’s the benefit of it.

Depends on the water current. If it’s light don’t use a weight, the bait will be heavy enough. If you have to use more than 5oz the water is probably moving too fast and you need to find slack current

Why is the hookup ratio less with the circle hook?

The gars mouth is bone, not soft tissue, so you have less chance of penetrating the bone with a circle hook. Circle hooks are meant to hook a catfish lip when they turn away but gar don’t have the same lips. In my experience with circle hooks you have to let the gar run longer and get the hook further in its throat and your more likely to hook the tongue. With a j-hook or octopus hook you have a long shaft to drive into, and sometimes through the bone of the mouth.

What hook & size you be using most ?

For gar I’ve tried all sorts of hooks and honestly they all work about the same. I typically stick to size 8-10 octopus hooks.

But you say the hook up ratio is less? But you do the catch and release right?

@@palma1009 I’ve tried every different hook and have had the same hook up ratio. I can honestly say that I have not found 1 hook to be better than another. I do mostly catch and release, sometimes I eat the smaller ones, 4’ or smaller. Since I release most gar I set the hook normally within 60 seconds of the run. Setting early helps keep the hook in the mouth so they don’t swallow it.
