I think it's better to start with the flying machines from the top. Amethyst shards can land on budding amethysts, where they will despawn. The two flying machine groups from the sides can push already broken shards down, so I think you end up with less loss this way.

If you get a bad configuration that stops you from building flying machines in the right spot, then it may be possible to increase the number of drops by breaking 1 or 2 budding amethyst blocks and making more room.

@@sqbuilder1328 I was just thinking about that, since sometimes there may be several in a row, but then the next row over there's just one or two blocks in the way. And of course, each one is random and would need the calcs be re-done each time.

Made one of these couple months back. Had the problem with upward flying machines so I only pushed from the sides. Then it broke. And now I know why. My observers weren’t covered. This proved to be very helpful.

It occurs to me that using a clock for this is flawed, because it will continue counting if the chunks are loaded even if no player is in random tick range, so it's entirely possible for the machines to be launched far too early and destroy all the partially-grown crystals. Hooking up a counter to a cactus+observer would let you time it based on the actual number of random ticks that happen, so it would reliably match the rate that the buds are growing. (And as a side effect also automatically compensate for higher randomtickspeed, which would be super convenient for testing in creative mode)

Cactus on sand, observer watching the air block above the cactus. Every once in a while (based on random growth ticks) the cactus will grow and immediately pop (like in a cactus farm) triggering the observer. Count pulses from the observer and trigger the flying machines after a set number of cactus-growths.

I think what Mojang really likes about farming amethyst is that players can't just blindly follow a tutorial, they either have to solve a puzzle themselves or be content with manually farming them. I'm not sure if that's ideal, especially considering solving the puzzle mostly involves just a lot of grunt work, but it's an interesting mechanic at least. There also is the issue that the game doesn't really do much at all to teach redstone within itself, you basically have to go to outside resources.
@zacherybutter7349
@zacherybutter7349 2 жыл бұрын
With that logic, you’re saying Dark Souls has the same issue. All jokes aside, it’s a fun part of games where they give you power but don’t tell you how to use it.
@Talinoth
@Talinoth 2 жыл бұрын
@@zacherybutter7349 It's not that the game doesn't give you the answers, the game doesn't even teach you the basic principles and game mechanics for you to discover your own answers. It's the difference between A: The teacher won't answer the questions on the test for you, but you've been taught how to do the maths yourself. B: You have to teach yourself the entire class because the teacher just told you to read the textbook. Luckily, the playerbase has stepped in where the devs haven't. Strictly speaking, Minecraft's game design is very social in nature precisely because of how unrealistic it would be to learn everything yourself.

I like it. If we could move budding amethysts, we would just make a huge floor of them and one flying machine and it would have been the same old sugar cane farm all over again. At least they gave us a new problem to solve, and this farm is a good compromise between doing it yourself and copying it from a tutorial without understanding anything about the thing
@real_dddf
@real_dddf 2 жыл бұрын
@@Talinoth the thing with redstone is, it's way too free to teach effectively. Sure they could have a description of each redstone element, but I think that was done with each update it was introduced, and I'm sure it isn't too hard to figure out what they do with some testing. What really is a challenge is putting together these elements to form circuits. This isn't something the developer could plausibly teach, and they themselves may not fully be masters of it either. Logic gates, latches, or binary encoding are all computer engineering topics that people get degrees in. Minecraft could help inspire people to pursue this, but you'll definitely need outside sources.

@@Talinoth It's true. I remember when I first played it not knowing anything about Minecraft. Died loads of times. Then survived the first few days to realise you slowly die from hunger. Accidently broke some grass. Got a seed. Had no idea what to do with , didn't know you could plant it or anything like that, then a chicken started to follow me. It's quiet a world of difference. It has a certain charm and mystery about it. But once you finally give up go online and get some help. It's like playing a whole new game once you know the in's and out's.

To expand upon this, use ChunkBase to locate Geodes within your Spawn Chunks, or within 128 blocks of where you mainly are in your Overworld. The odds are 1/35 Chunks, and I have 20 possible locations just in my Spawn. Use a Water Collection system to a single point, with a Rail that connects and collects them all. Mine a 2x3 Horse Path along all of the Chunk Borders at Y level 2,3, &4 to find your Deepslate Coal Ore and other Rares, then use those to connect your Rail system together. While there will be some inefficiencies along the periphery, the multiple Geodes will more than make up any losses due to sheer numbers. I just needed a video that didn't require a degree in Redstone to wire them all up, great job!

Yepp, if they wouldn't require player nearby, building such a farm in the spawn chunks would be perfectly fine (The farm causes almost no lag, when it's not harvesting). I did 8 geodes like this when I was making these farms as well. I of course did get the inspiration because of the blitz server. however I did have a couple of differences that you didn't have. first have the top flying machine go first so the items that land on the budding amethyst will get shoved off by the front and side. it will increase the efficiency by a bit. but since it's easy to implement it should definitely be worth it. second is that I made the flying machines 3 blocks in footprint.
@TheRealWormbo
@TheRealWormbo 2 жыл бұрын
Well, these flying machines are also just 3 block footprint. I'm honestly not quire sure why ilmango pointed out the L-shape so much, since you only need to stop the slime or honey structure *somehow*. So basically 3 blocks in a line and at least one additional block anywhere for the stopper.

20:30 I bet you still could do that. Take a schematic, process it in python to 3 2D images, then do some image processing (I know enough to know it's doable, but not enough to do it myself) to design a layout with those L shapes in the slime/honey, then use that to make a schematic. Then you just line them up in the world manually. You could design it such that you don't duplicate already broken crystals. If it gets stuck it can just give up, or try a different algorithm. I would certainly not be surprised if someone manages to make such a program within a few weeks

I'm wondering if mapping of the top side could be done by dropping a single layer of sand over the whole geode, then observe what block made it to the floor as blocks. The idea is to map the top side first by clearing out all growing crystals, tick freez, place torches on top of all budding amethyst, let the layer of sand fall and form a pattern on the floor. Then proceed with the building, just treat all the torches like a valid amethyst crystal and they'll be taken out by the flying machine eventually. That wouldn't leave out the over lapping spots, but I think it'll make the top/bottom side a lot easier to map. Edit: I don't have Java so I'm gonna test this theory on Bedrock, minus the actual flying machine part of course.

Potential for optimization. There are some cyrstalls that did not get broken. Maybe if a flying machine does not fly the whole way to the other side but will return at some point in the middly and an other flying machine from the other side does the same maybe there can be more crystals in rerach without breaking any budding blocks.

Nice to have a cookie-cutter solution. I've yet to even bother with a farm for one, and have just manually harvested with fortune.

It could be slightly more efficient for some layouts to have separate flying machines come in from all four sides and reversing in the middle; they might encounter fewer conflicting blocks. The trick might be the necessary non-moveable blocks required in the middle of the geode to allow the machine to reverse. Probably wouldn't have a big impact, and in some cases you might not gain anything, but it can probably squeeze out at least a few more in many cases.

This is completely off topic, but I just want it to be known that every time I see the thumbnail for this video in my peripheral, my 1990's ass brain sees the scene where Perfect Cell is pointing to his head talking about the nuclease that lets him regenerate.

I normally hate when mcKZfaqrs use custom textures and shaders and such cuz it is very confusing sometimes, which is one thing I'm glad about your videos using the vanilla textures. HOWEVER: I was wondering if you would consider using JUST the Vanilla Tweaks redstone identifying block type resource packs (Like the ones that allow you to tell if a piston is a sticky piston even from the side, which direction hoppers/droppers/observers/etc are facing), most of these still look like the vanilla components just have little arrows and such added to them. I'm a rather staunch "Vanilla Minecraft"er ... but even I've started using these Vanilla Tweaks cuz it just makes life so much simpler.

Would it be better to have a hopper minecart on the bottom of the farm instead of lots of hoppers or water streams?

i may be wrong, but would it not be more effecient in specific scenarios to remove some of the budding amethyst blocks? one scenario I can think of that would be quite rare but still important to think about would be if several budding amethyst blocks are blocking all possible growing locations on another block, it would be beneficial to remove the blocked bud which would give you access to something like 4 extra growing locations

To get the last bit of efficiency out of things, sometimes you have one budding block covering multiple shard blocks that will not be cut off. In that case it might make more sense to get rid of that one so the other multiple ones are accessible, generating a few more

If that one block is blocking 5 shards IG guess… seems uncommon though.

Is it possible to push the budding amethyst blocks into a more usable configuration for easier farming or do they have to stay in their original position?

Smaller scale version of this would supply a world with only a small group playing. Just harvesting with a timer on a set of pistons... or a detection version. Would there be a configuration to search for that would make a small farm the most efficient? Like a row of four evenly spaced or a row of three or four blocks to catch the row over and over.
