How to MAKE an INSERT NUT/NUTSERT tool for less than $2

Save a few hundred dollars by using this quick and easy to assemble tool when installing rivet nuts, insert nuts, nutserts. Whatever you want to call them. Use your impact driver and this simple setup to quickly install leveling feet in furniture bases.

Awesome trick! Have you ever installed them with the HF tool then if one's a bit loose, hit it with your impact setup to tighten it down more?

Thanks. By lock washer you mean a split washer not one of them spikey washers, right? Also, what's its purpose? Why not just use another flat washer? Just wondering.

Yes a split washer. If a flat washer works well for you then go for it! I think I tried splits because it's what I had at the time so I can't say for sure which is ultimately better. Thanks for watching!

There is an even easier method. First take a 12” piece of flat bar 1’ wide, drill your 1/4” hole near the end. This bar will be directly above the riv-nut, and you hold the bar/handle to prevent the riv-nut from turning while tightening. On top of the bar add 1 grade 8 washer then a thrust bearing then another grade 8 washer. If you don’t have a thrust bearing, then use 3 grade 8 washers with a little grease or anti seize . Then last use the 1/4 20 grade 8 bolt with anti seize on the threads. Insert the riv-nut on the bolt or in the hole, then use a wrench, a ratchet, or best a drill/driver. So the stack looks like this, bolt with greased threads through the 3 greased washers and the hole in the flat bar handle. I manufacture a machine that utilizes 30 3/8” steel riv-nuts. This tool is by far the fastest!

That's the best solution when you're using thicker steel 1/4" or thicker but in most of my projects I use 1/8' and that's just not enough threads to bear the weight of some of my heavier pieces. Thanks for watching.

This is the LAZY MAN'S way! You should used a fitted threaded nut instead of a slider nut. YOU risk ruining the threads from the stress of tightening with a drill. Too many people are doing this and those of us who do things the right way will always cringe at this! You ruin them threads and you'll have a much bigger job on your hands.
