Look, making decisions is not easy. There are so many factors at play and so many ways to go wrong with things. As part 1 in a new series that I'm calling "Going Essentialist," I'm sharing 6 tips on how to make better decisions.

Notes 1. To avoid poor choices, don't make decisions after lunch. It may be best to make decisions in the morning while your brain is at its peak. 2. If it's not a hell yes, then it's a no. Give yourself time to reflect on your decision. 3. For big life decisions, make a pros and cons list. Estimate their respective weights based on their importance. Those on each side that have equivalent weight will be crossed out. The heaviest side wins. 4. To avoid catastrophic choices, take 20 minutes to calm down. Recover from the fight or flight response before making a decision. 5. For decisions that aren't urgent, sleep on them (and sleep well). 6. For better decision making in general, get to know your psychological biases. 7. Nothing in life is worth rushing for. Awareness is a great place to start, even if you don't know how to apply it yet.

The note number 7 gets me confused. Why is not worth in rushing things in life? I mean, isn't that the meaning of life (more or less) ?
@josejaimeceja3979
@josejaimeceja3979 4 жыл бұрын
@@justo9564 I think it may refer to the fact of rushing things often tends to build expectations and then when those expectations don't get filled it tends to get ruined. (Applies for most of your plans in life). Just calm down, take it easy and make better decisions.

There was this one School of Life video titled "How to Make a Decision" and the main idea of it is that before making a decision you should think through any issue from the eyes of: Gut, Caution, Enemy, Death and Courage. It goes really well with this video in my opinion. Here's the link if you're interested kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pdGUpqSLurquaWg.html

If your actions contradict your beliefs and values, it’s *IMPORTANT* to ask why. Cognitive dissonance can cause internal friction that will impact you long-term.

@KingSpillah
@KingSpillah 5 жыл бұрын
@@aizengenesis3761 anytime you lie to yourself basically. If your actions don't match your goals, values, beliefs, and promises to yourself you usually rationalize them to yourself to fix the unpleasant feeling you get by not being the narrative you tell yourself. Essentially this piles up and eventually you can't rationalize your actions any longer, this creates intense existential anxiety and sometimes depression and happens to almost everybody.

I once heard (and I really wish I could remember from where so I can credit it) that if you are stuck between two decisions, take a coin and alot each side with one of the choices, then flip the coin. When the coin is in the air, there's a moment when you want the coin to land on a specific side. Not sure if that would help anyone, but it was worth mentioning! 😅

A week ago, I got the worst sunburn I've ever had. The amount of times I thought "I should at least cover my shoulders" and "I should probably put on sunscreen" is alarming. I completely ignored my better judgment. I went for the "convenient at the moment" route and have paid for it with continual inconvenience and pain from the day I received the sunburn to now (probably tomorrow and the next day, too). All that to say that, the day after I got that sunburn, I looked at myself in the mirror and said, "you knew better, you warned yourself, you knew the right decision, and you ignored it; make it a habit to follow your better judgment." That has vastly improved this week's decision making, as I hope it will improve the next and the next, etc.

This needs a lot of reflection and knowledge about psychology as you said. Awareness is important. To move away from autopilot. Can't thank you enough for this... I've been torn lately. I'm 16 and everyone wants me to pursue engineering but I don't want to give up years of my life preparing for something that I'm not passionate about while giving up things I love like sports, singing and learning new things.. The pros and cons list is something that'll definitely help me.. Thanks a lot Nathaniel!!

OMG, it's the same for me. I'm 15 and everyone in my family wants that I became a Doctor, and it's really awful feel the pressure and the fear about don't do what they expect for me. I really hope you find and follow your essential way, like me hahahahahajha
