Let me start off by saying, I have ZERO interest in video. If all my cameras were limited to 144p in exchange for better high ISO performance or battery life I would take that hit in an instant. That said, I am still here watching the video all the way through(including the PhaseOne ad). I'm still hitting the thumbs up. I'm still commenting on the video. All because every one of those actions helps promote the video through the KZfaq algorithm. Hopefully it will keep Zack around and encourage him to keep putting out quality content. No Zack = less fun on KZfaq(4 light modifiers/crop or crap were AWESOME), less great info(White seamless/lighting videos) and a feed quickly devolving into gear reviews/unboxings😢

Hi Zack, the first video i saw from you was earlier today "why you don't win a contest". "How to make better videos with your phone" is only the second one i have seen from you. I am an EE engineer and i was laid off from a multinational company in 2015 after a long and very satisfying career. When that happened i decided to disconnected from the tv world that i was used to and jump right into the information highway ( KZfaq). I don't do much plain entertainment per se, i am getting old so time is precious and i use as much time as possible learning. I have watch hundreds and hundreds of you tubers and content hours and i am finally getting to the point were i want to "really" start my own you tube channel. This is the first time that i have taken time to write a comment in the past five years. I have written this long preamble trying to convey to you how much i really appreciate what you have to say and what you have shown me in these two videos. "This" particular video has really convince me that you don't need a big investment up front and that is more important to think clearly to maximize resources, have good content and to be honest and truthful with the message. Thank you, very, very, much!!!!

Thank you. It is refreshing to get advice on video production that is not all about hardware and high end production, instead it is about how a small video producer like me (just a little KZfaq channel where I share my modest ideas) can produce quality content without the huge outlay of cash, and more importantly, time. Always enjoy your videos, good to see you back.

Hi Zack. Awesome video. My wife has been creating video content. So being a camera nerd I built her an awesome little system with a heavy duty wheeled stand, holding lights, a microphone and a camera. She tried using it once or twice. Found the camera too complicated. Went back to using her phone. Your setup is awesome. Love it. Thank you for sharing.

I have been using the LumaFusion app for iPad for about 6 months or so. Incredibly useful and capable tool. Every time you think that you have pretty much found the limits of that app, you discover a new feature. You can literally add LUTs in LumaFusion, which is just insane to me. I had Filmic Pro, in the past. It wasn't bad, but didn't really blow me away, either. I think that it would be a fantastic app for someone who absolutely needs some of the features that it offers, but only has a phone to use for shooting. Modern phones have such good video quality straight out of camera, though, that I found myself not really using Filmic Pro, even though I already had it.
@ZackAriasATL

I’ve been shooting with the iPhone 11 Pro and there’s an issue I can’t figure out with the default camera app. When shooting video it does some sort of auto HDR something. If you look at the clip in this video where I’m talking about background (around 8:35) you’ll see the walls behind me “flickering”. It’s really noticeable in bright shots outdoors. I’ve had the sky pop from pure white to blue in the middle of a video. I have turned off the HDR function for stills but I can’t figure out why it’s doing it for video. This is where Filmic has saved my ass on a few clips.
@SkylerKing
@SkylerKing 4 жыл бұрын
@@ZackAriasATL I can definitely see how FilmicPro would be a much better option, in that case. Does it do it even when you lock the focus & exposure before recording? For example, in photo or video you can tap the screen to lock a focus point, and even drag up/down to change/set the exposure before recording. If you do that, does it still override and start going in and out of the "HDR" mode?

Man, I so get that whole “it’s just too much” thing. Glad to see you back. By all means, reduce that friction. You’re kicking out shockingly good image quality (way better than a significant number of other youtubers). If I were in your shoes and wanted to tweak anything, the only real change I’d make is probably the camera, but only to shrink the DOF a tiny bit so the background isn’t quite so in focus. It doesn’t have to totally blown out, but it does tend to be less noticeable if it’s pleasantly soft. This of course is all stuff you already know, and I’d rather see content that was easier for you to make than getting caught up in that stuff.

Mr. Arias, thanks for your honesty. This video is why I gravitate to guys like you. You've been a camera-mentor of mine for years and it's refreshing to hear someone confess motivation issues with doing personal projects. In my head...even to start, my videos require the charisma of Casey Neistadt, video quality of David Fincher, originality of Sam Kolder and dense knowledge like Philip Bloom. It's so easy to psych myself out with those comparisons and the friction is too great to even get started. Like you, I have the gear to do it but I get stalled out early with "what do I have to say that is worthwhile?" Kinda reminds me of a Chase Jarvis mantra while he wrote a book. "Two shitty pages a day". Just do something, don't judge it harshly and maybe get a little better if you see an opportunity. Once again, you're an inspiration. Thanks man! I appreciate you!

ZACK! I missed you, glad you're back and yakking and Zacking. You DO have the gift of gab. I've been a fan since watching what I think was your very first vid, shot on some kind of little camera (flip cam or something?) that was popular for a year or so, you amusingly poked fun at doing something about photoshop BS but then turned serious as you talked about your father... you strapped the camera on top of your car as I recall, and went to visit him... that was a LONG TIME ago, right? ANYHOW, this is a really great not-so-short vid full of great info... and you are soooooo smooth now, calm and collected and sincere and, well, hope you're feeling better.

Yes to video showing your approach to Filmic Pro. Yes to the video on LumaFusion. In each case simple is better. The more intricate stuff which is second nature to you can overload a beginner. And that’s what I like about this start to a series: it simplifies. Later videos can chase the finer points. Welcome back. The style and content you’ve chosen is terrific. The quality of the rock solid, well lit video equals anything shot with equipment ten times as expensive and one hundred times more complex.

The video looks great. After this video makes the rounds, I have a feeling there will be a lot of content that looks just like this. Also, I love the idea of making things SIMPLE. It's great to see you again!

That section on mental blocks hit me hard. I've been meaning to start a youtube channel for well over a year. I know what I want to do, I know the content I want to make, and I know how to do it. But some days, especially after teaching all week, it is all I can do to get out of bed.

Cool stuff Zack - i too have been reaching for my sony phone to create videos instead of getting out the DSLR + boom mic etc especially when in public doing some off the cuff shoot - I get less looks and less people coming over to challenge me for filming somewhere.

Thankyou Zack, welcome back, kiss and small steps works. The TV is ok, its your stories and style of telling I am here for, not even sure what else you could cover, maybe revisit one light tips. Looking forward to your nest video, whenever you are ready. Chil

When I started this latest round of videos I only had one idea for a video to make. That’s the one about contests. The good thing about just getting up and starting is that ideas will come to you. Someone will say something in a comment and that will spark an idea for another video. And yes... KISS and small steps. Thank you!

I am glad you mentioned the door frame because its been bugging me :-) . Also, I use Lumafusion heavily, mainly for my other KZfaq channel ( mainly about riding bikes ) and even for music videos but really all my video editing needs are taken care of with this app. Love it!

I'd get rid of the TV and maybe a subtle colour gradient from another light source, maybe? Great series Zack, good to see you back on KZfaq.

A photographer friend sent me here. I self shoot vids on my android for KZfaq and other platforms. This was very helpful, I have a ring light and 2 neewer umbrella lights. I never quite know how to use them with my window/ceiling light for the best results. Thanks for these tips! Can't wait to try them.

@@ZackAriasATL I use power director and viva video for editing, fma or newgrounds for royalty free music, and dropbox to store my files. I use a small clip on ring light (not turned on) to keep me looking at the camera and not myself on screen. And I have a bluetooth remote for my phone.
