I buy green coffee beans, vacuum seal them - they last for years. I then roast only what I can use in 2-3 weeks. Roasting is easily done in a cast iron skillet or a Dutch oven. Hand grinders can be ordered on line for less than $10.00. A French press is a good alternative to a percolator. When we are faced with a power outage - this is how I do it.

One of my 80+ year old customers still makes coffee the way she was taught by her mom. She puts her coffee grounds in boiling water and then lets it sit overnight. In the morning she filters it through a piece of cloth (cleaned afterwards every time). She then warms up her filtered coffee.

I enjoyed my first cup with your "cowboy coffee " primer this early Friday morning! Great !!! All that is missing is the fireplace and the cabin in the mountains :-(. I pulled out the copper bottom percolator just last week during a power outage and made a fresh pot on the camp stove. Absolutely NOTHING beats the aroma of perking coffee on the breeze. Wonderful video to wake up to this morning... Just in time for all the humidity to blow out of Upstate Carolina and the temperatures to drop. Amen! Blessings to you and keep up the the great videos!

I have a small percolator that I had to use when we lost our electricity during an ice storm. If you coat the bottom of the percolator with dish soap it's easier to wash off the soot off. I use an electric percolator to make my coffee and a coffee grinder to grind whole beans.

I love to make “Cowboy Coffee” in the enamel coffee pot with no inside filter system. With loose grounds. I make it outside in my cowboy kitchen. No matter the weather. *For my emergency preparedness food bin I did get the coffee in the pre measured pouches and also the single cup pouches. I think those will come in handy and stay fresher longer.

WOW... People does not know how to brew a cup of coffee?? Amazing! Thanks for once again giving us some good time watching your presentation. I beg though to disagree on the procedure itself. In my family it has always been: Bring the water to a rolling boil, remove the vessel from the heat, put in the coffee on top, leave it until all the coffee has sunk to the bottom (or honestly: MOST of the grounds). No cold water on top. Well, that is our way of making good coffee. Thanks again for a nice video!

I made cowboy coffee for about 20 years when I lived off grid. One thing I added after I put in the cold water, was a couple of taps of my spoon on the side of the coffee pot. It makes those last few grounds sink to the bottom. Best coffee ever!
@dannypreece8932

I like your method of making coffee it's very similar to the way I learned to make camp coffee. The only difference is let the water warm before adding the grounds. Once the water is warm with just a light steam coming off it add the grounds. Then bring it to a rolling boil for three minutes. Set it off to the side until it settles then add the cold water to settle the grounds. The boiling takes the bitterness out of the coffee and you can drink it without sweetener or milk or cream.

Now i have a coffee maker less trouble and the coffee is just as good.I love the Dunkin Doughnuts creamer hmmmmmm yum yum.

I make my Cowboy coffee in a cast iron dutch oven..I use a womans nylon sock, put my coffee in the sock and tie a knot, and toss in the water, set on the fire, and use a dipper to get the coffee into the cup..I prefer a filter, so a nylon sock, or a cotton sock will work as a filter..When I would go camping with my horse in Alaska, I pre made my nylon coffee filters, filled with coffee, and then stuffed them in a waterproof bag, or container to carry in my saddle bags. I carried a similiar pot to your percolator pot. Nowadays, I live in the deep south USA, and we have electric outages on a regular basis from stirms, here on my horse farm, so I make the coffee in the fireplace...

Your verbal delivery is like a meditation coach, it's so relaxing! Good tips. I don't usually like coffee made in a percolator, it's too bitter. Maybe I'm not boiling it long enough? When camping I make my coffee in a French press. I also used it daily during the Snow-acalypse that hit Texas a few months ago. I KNOW the Stuff has really hit the fan if I have to make coffee without my press! I've read some historical fiction where they scraped burnt toast and boiled the crumbs for a coffee substitute. And I've tried toasted wheat coffee substitute. None of that has caffeine, and, to an admitted coffee snob, both are pretty bad. I've also tried toasted youpon "coffee". It does have caffeine in it. There's a very interesting story about it on how the East India Company, who were tea traders and once one of the most powerful companies in the world, persuaded scientists to name it "ilex vomatoria" while also assigning some terrible side effects to it in order to eliminate the potential North American threat to the tea trade. But nothing tastes like that nectar of the gods, real coffee! If you're an addict, pack some No-Doz or Excederin, because if you are really addicted and you go cold turkey, you will be miserable for several days.

Heat water and pour in a one cup filter. Don't trust rust! I measure 1/2 T per 6 oz water. If you don't have a coffee percolator, you're sure not gonna have a coffee grinder or be able to roast coffee . Still I find some good info here - but if you don't get rid of those grains before drinking, they will destroy your esophagus. It's not even recommended to pour your grains down your sink pipe because it ERRODES METAL.

You could always used a small metal strainer to pour the coffee through if there were still grounds floating around in the coffee if you forget to add cold water. Also, you could use a dry coffee mug to measure the coffee you are adding to the pot of water keeping in mind one ounce = 2 tablespoons. If the mug can hold 10 ounces, you'd need to fill it half way to get 10 tablespoons worth.
