I'm a 85 yearold Ozark hill billy and used to smoke, (i quit) anyway, My way was to fill the water to the bottom of the basket then fill the basket all the way to the top, IF the designer didnt mean for the basket to be filled he wouldnt have made it so deep, Place on the fire and watch till it starts perking, then pullit back so it dont boil over , then light a ciggerett and when the CIG is done the coffee is done. There has always been a relation ship between ciggerets and coffee . :) have a good day.:)

Help me understand this please. If you stop the water from boiling, then it isn’t coming down over the grounds, except just a little when you take it off the fire. So, the almost-booking water is sitting under the grounds, instead of seeping down through them to become coffee liquid. Sounds like weak coffee to me. Am I missing something?

I've been using a percolator several months now. I like the sound, the aroma is great in the morning, the flavor is just the goodness a morning needs. Here in Denmark thermo carafes are a big thing. Growing up I always found a thermo carafe filled with freshly brewed coffee on the living room table at home or at my grandma's. So when I was a teenager and started drinking coffee, my grandma taught me a trick to get rid of the oily buildup in the thermo carafe: she would fill three quarters (give or take) of the carafe with boiling hot water and then add in two teaspoons of baking soda. The baking soda would react instantly with the hot water, and the oil would come off in flakes. I used this trick when I bought a second-hand electric percolator three years ago, so I can tell you for a fact that it works wonders. Just a tip (if you have the heart to put baking soda in your percolator). Fun fact: it's really hard to find a percolator here in Denmark as people tended to do pour overs or use vacuum brewers before we had the automatic drip (as opposed to the US, where - as far as I can tell - percolator coffee was the common thing before automatic drip coffee). You can buy a few electric ones online and camping percolators at wild life stores, but you won't find any in your typical Danish hardware store. I'm deeply fascinated by the percolator, despite its bad reputation. I really, really want to buy a vintage stove-top percolator, but you can't find any here in Denmark. At one point I found a Pyrex glass percolator from the 50s or 60s, which I bought. However, it got wrecked in the mail and it kinda broke my heart as there are a limited number of these in circulation. Oh well. To wrap things up, have a nice day at the homestead!

What an amazing comment!! Thank you for the great tips and for the wonderful insight into your part of the world. I will definitely try the baking soda. The Pryex Glass ones are really rare do to a safety recall in the 70s. My parents had one and you had to send in the glass stem and basket becasue I think they could break, chip or something and get into your coffee. I think they sent a refund if you mailed in the internal parts. They kept the glass pot and used it on to make tea in for years.

@@ryanhawkins1235 The Pyrex glass percolator was our first coffee pot when we were married. It was a shower gift. Those fragile glass parts - stem and basket didn't last long; they were easily broken. It was okay since we were mostly tea drinkers back then. I never knew about the recall.

Hi Jackie...just adding another comment. This is unrelated but I noticed that you have a well water pump next to your sink. That is fantastic. I didn’t see a video on your channel about it...but...If you are ever up for it, could you do a video about that. My parents had a well but the hand pump was out by the well!! Ted and I are looking to move (eventually!) and we will probably have a well where we are going. I would love to learn about having a well water pump at the sink for a back-up and how you find it works...and are you happy with it. Hope you are having a great week. Love and God Bless, Mary ❤️😘❤️
@LittleCountryCabin
@LittleCountryCabin 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question! The pump actually isn’t hooked up yet. We ran into a problem and are looking at other ways to get water to it. The pump is rated for up to 19 ft so it is a shallow well pump (which is common for these type hand pumps). We went down over 30 ft (by hand) and didn’t hit water. We are now looking at putting in a cistern type tank underground to catch rainwater and hook the pump to that. Eventually we hope to have a deep well but the cost in our area is unbelievably high. In an off grid situation a deep well might not be the best option anyway because of the difficulty getting water up without an electric pump. We will get the hand pump up and going and I sure will document it in a video to hopefully show another option to have safe, clean water in an emergency. I will keep you posted on the progress🤗. We have to be prepared! Thanks for the wonderful feedback sweet friend and God bless!❤️

Your video popped up, wasn’t even looking about percolator coffee- but so glad it did! It’s the video I didn’t realize I needed! I came across a new stainless steel percolator at the thrift about a year ago & fell in love with perked coffee! My mom had a glass Pyrex one growing up, so it was nostalgic too. I also put fresh local honey from my friends’ 🌸🐝 I took note of your tip to turn it down once it starts perking- and to just let it perc 2-3 min; I was letting it go full blast at least 5. No wonder it’s been a tad bitter!😂 But liked it anyway. It’s going to be better now, thanks! And just love how you finish it with Scripture♥️🙏🏼 God bless you too!

My grandparents on my Dad's side always used an electric perculator. Grandma didn't drink coffee so they had a four cup for daily use and a 12 cup for when company was over. I have both of them now. The four cup was dark brown and crusty up to the full mark and Grandma passed eight years after Grandpa so it just sat. She never washed the coffee pot as my Great Grandpa (her dad) said washing the pot would ruin the coffee. I used baking soda follow cycle followed by a vinegar cycle and it clean up really well. That thick crust was too much and I just cleaned up and thought to mysefl "sorry Grandma"

@LittleCountryCabin This is my Pyrex Flameware story: I am 66 years old. When I was a kid we would visit my aunt, uncle and cousins often. My aunt was a coffee drinker the pyrex percolator was her coffee pot. I remember being just tall enough to be eye level to the gas burner of the stove. When she made coffee as she did every time we visited, I was fascinated and mesmerized watching this pot do its magic. I was amazed how the blue flame created the stream of bubbles at the bottom of the pot that eventually rose up the pump creating coffee. Magic! Jump 35 years ...I am at a flea market and I see this coffee pot sitting on the gravel all by itself being ignored. I ran to get it and scooped it up. It was $20, and I couldn't have been happier. I would have gladly paid whatever the price was. I lived about an hour away and looked at that pot the whole time we were driving home. It was filthy, but in good shape; no chips, nicks or scratches. This had been a family's coffee pot. I wondered how many times it was perked before everyone started their busy days. How many times did mothers sit at the kitchen table drinking coffee from this pot after the kids went to school? What was its history that led me to discovering it that day? Thoughts and memories of Aunt Mary Anne and her coffee flooded my mind. When we got home I couldn’t get out of the car fast enough. After a serious cleaning, I was ready for some coffee. I filled the pot up, turned on the burner, and waited. I remembered all the times I watched my Aunt Mary Anne make coffee. I was still fascinated and mesmerized by the rising bubbles and distinct sound this percolator made as the aroma quickly filled the my nose. Amazing how those senses have the power to transport you to your childhood… I have been making coffee with that flea market Pyrex Flameware percolator for all these years. My Aunt is gone now but every time I make coffee I am a little kid in her kitchen watching magic before my eyes again. I toast my Aunt Mary Anne with the first cup in thanks for introducing me to this work of art. Thanks Aunt Mary Anne. I can’t wait until we are once again together sharing a magical cup of coffee... Peace...

My that cup of Joe does look Heavenly. And the L❤️VE you put into making it as well. I landed here by way of a video search for the Faberware 12 Cup Stovetop Coffee Maker. I love all things coffee i.e. aroma, sound, taste, and smell. When the Keurig CM became popular I ditched my ole faithful, tried & true traditional Mr. Coffee for one and realized I mainly invested in convenience (not taste) as I found myself looking more forward to grabbing a cup from my local McDonald's on the way to work each morning. Case in point Old School is still the Best School on many levels during these microwave times our world has adopted. In any case, Thanx A Bunch for the tidbits of knowledge here on all things Percolator Coffee, who knew? And that uplifting Scripture you referenced. Btw, beautiful percolator, coffee gear, and lovely abode you have there. Stay Blessed!🙏🏽💚👍🏽🙂

I would prefer spring water, over distilled water. You need some minerals in your water to make your beverages taste nice. I have a few 'alcohol' burners, in case the power goes out. I also have 2 alcohol percolators. They use a 'bunsen' type burner beneath the urn. They are very slow to perk a pot of coffee. I have a coleman percolator coffee pot, and a faberware one, but they are very slow too. They are like your, they site on the stove to heat and perk. I do not think you are supposed to be able to see throw the coffee when you pour it ! I guess I do tend to like the spoon to stand up in the cup once you are done stirring it, aka a little on the strong side. Thanks for posting this video, I enjoyed it. I also like your hand water pump.
