I didn't forget part 3! I'm debating how much of the mixing process I want to show. In this segment you see how to make pucks. This is the secret to getting the power and density that commercial powder has. Screening is great for some applications like muzzleloading. For cartridges you'll want to press and corn your powder. This will drastically increase the power and durability of your powder.

You don't need a press to make pucks. You can use a large C-clap. It has enough pressure to make nice pucks if you don't have any space for a press.

If you haven’t found this out already, be careful trying to extract your puck by pressing on the edge of the die with your press. Mine actually bent/bowed doing this!

Thanks for the warning. My die is steel so no problems on my end. I think it's safer than hitting it with a mallet.

Harbor Freight recently discontinued their 6 Ton Press which looks just like yours. Where did you find your Press and who makes it ,also how much did it cost? It looks like it would be handy to have in anybody's Garage for lots of other things. I've never heard of the Rice Starch before but the "Cast Boolets" web page has lots of chats etc. on making Black Powder.

JEGS brand from Amazon. It's all Chinese stuff. I would recommend a step up from the 6tn. Go for 10 or more.

@@SuperSneakySteve to compare commercial Swiss or other brands 30 ton bottle Jack is more than enough plus only brass die and piston nothing else (for obvious safety reasons)! 5% water by weight to mixture, nice good stirring and then you press it! For the next step which is brake the pucks you use a rock tumbler kind style but the jar have a thick screen-mesh attached( depending what grade do you want it) inside have two big balls of lead to crush it and every one cycle it made the broken pieces drop of and you collect them! That is the traditional process based on what I read!

IN you black powder recipe for pucking, did you still use the SGRS additive or did you leave it out? Where do you get the compression dies (pucking dies). Did you machine them yourself or purchase elsewhere.
@SuperSneakySteve

No SGRS in the pucked powder. Get it only slightly damp then press. No water should come out when pressing. Dies can be ordered from Woodysrocks website. Order extra spacers.

Gave me some ideas to make some changes in "MY" pucking. I use a home made pucking die with a push through system, but I use a BIG OL VICE, I do let mine sit and hit it again, but I will wait longer, maybe invest in a Harbor Freight press or make my own, a little engineering and work I could use my two post car lift? Just about ready To Test, gotta weigh and if the weight is stabilized then they are DRY and ready to test! I tried 4 different carbons to see what may work best, Guava tree trimmings, walnut shell abrasive, whole Corn, and 2x distilled sour mashed whisky biproduct. Keep the smoke trains SMOKING! Glad you stopped by Dave. I tried a 6tn jack and it doesn't quite do it. You get a puck about as hard as wood. I stepped up to a 10tn and got the ceramic like hardness that you need. If your die is larger than mine you'll want even more pressure since it's more spread out. Good luck!

@@SuperSneakySteve , have you thought of putting your videos in specifically grouped play lists? I went to see if you had a play list of your videos about making black powder only to find that you have just one play list with over 200 videos in it. Can I suggest you separate your videos according to topics? You would get a lot more views. Because I can't easily find a playlist on any specific topic I'm less inclined to watch more videos. Otherwise I'd quite happily watch more of your videos on the topics I'm interested in. Just a suggestion.

I tried this and it sort of worked but I now see I made two mistakes. First was too much water so I made something of a mess, though being BP it cleaned up easily. Second was too much pressure - I had been seeing anywhere from 2 to 20 tons for this, so I used my 6T and put so much pressure on my cheap Chinese press to actually bend the press. Also it seemed to be going way slow - as I had gotten the 30mm Dabpress and not the 40mm like you have here, which is actually 95% bigger and so twice as fast. On Quora some guy was saying the water is needed to make the KNO3 bind with the charcoal, but I wonder about that. I am actually pressing powder I made in 2019 hand granulated ( and not sorting, everything went in the bottle) with no binder, and it had been working ok until it started clumping, then clogged my powder measure, and resulted in dryballing the gun

Pucked powder needs very little water. I just give it a few squirts with my sprayer and that's it. Just enough to stop some of the dust and form a good puck. To make it go faster make spacers out of milk jug plastic so you can make multiple disks at once. If you upgrade to a 20t press like I have you can safely move up to a 3" die.
@Saltpetere

@@SuperSneakySteve I have a 40mm Dabpress now. I was making dry pucks with the 30mm one until I read on Quora that I wasn't using enough water for the KNO3 to bind with the charcoal (utter BS I now know) so I put too much water in it, the original 30mm Dabpress jammed and I pounded it out of shape getting it open. No loss as it was going to take forever doing 30mm pucks.

There is risk involved in this. I only make corned powder for my cap and ball revolvers and metallic cartridges. Screened powder is safer to make and just as good. I use it in all my muzzle loaders.

How long do you dry the puck? You used hardly any water. Either dehydrator or air dry? Thanks.
@SuperSneakySteve
@SuperSneakySteve Жыл бұрын
You don't need much water for pucking. Less is better than too much. You don't want the KNO3 to come out of solution. If you used water a dehydrator is an option but you must confirm the heat before trying it with a thermometer. The sun and air works fine too. I like to give them a week to dry but it's really preference. The pucks should ring like pottery. That's how you know it's ready.
