The making of my powerful corona motor (or electrostatic motor/atmospheric motor). This is my version 2 and has 10 electrodes which are paint shaver blades for more precision. I show how to make it step-by-step and then demonstrate it being powered by a Wimshurst machine and a high voltage power supply, turning a fan blade.

Thanks my friend,is my error i have make a confusion loking to your motor, and i thinking in other ...my question is about an opinion that i have that we can use a LITLE of DC power (Volts and Amps),to produce a hudge quantity of (high voltage) , than this type of motor is very importante , conected to high voltage , source: sucking of the air or other ways like a big wimshurst machine, but in resume the idea is with high voltage put in rotation a motor with a flywheel that produce more Amps that we need to put in (to extract), to run for example the wimshurst but with some modifications in the type of the rotor and capacitor's, regulating the spark to be more fast as possible and more power , maybe we can run a very important motor generator of DC power out , use an inverter , charge bateries 24 h a day... in my research about rotors i have see that is possible to make them anti-gravity with the repulsion of magnets, and in one side o axe"rotor" a metal sephere in contact with a glass , (reduce the quntity of friction) and the amps that we need to a good rotation "velocity"will be more low, in my opinion probably with a flywheel to asist the 2 disc's of the wimshurst machine is better , anti-gravity technic and without bearings , only glass and spheres "speaking about the type of rotor"... thanks for your time keep the good work my friend, i consider extremely important people like you that educate and help others in many ways, like the (the production of electricity) . if you need to ask something you can contact me in the facebook : Name :(João Cantinho) Country: Portugal

foupana You can use a small DC power (voltage x amps) to produce a high voltage but at the same time the amps will be made smaller. With the losses, the output power will be less than the input power. You always need an external energy source to get more out. I don't know if you have built things yourself, but if not, try building your ideas and you'll quickly learn the limitations.

First time I've heard of this sort of motor. It's an interesting concept, though I still don't understand the function of the aluminum foil inside the jar after reading you webpage. It only says, "For improved performance, an electrically conductive material lines the inside of the cylinder". Given that it seems to produce a significant amount of torque, I wonder if it wouldn't be even more powerful if the blades rested lightly on the rotor so that the electrons would have an easier time flowing onto the plastic and back off.
@bobbygene8274
@bobbygene8274 2 жыл бұрын
The blades resting on the rotor would introduce "drag" on the rotor. This likely preventing it from turning at all, as there is very little torque available during start up due to the small or limited amount of current flowing through the device. The demonstrated torque produced while spinning is of course the effect of the mass of the moving rotor assembly.

@RimstarOrg

It's hard for me to say. There's probably a trade-off point somewhere where increased losses from more blades will start to mean less power.

I made this with a 3 kv power supply and got < 1 efficiency. But it was cool to see it work. Thanks for the idea. Mine was much smaller. I used staggered needel design rather than a blade design, maybe that's why I got low efficiency?

Could be. With needles there's less charge area to repel and attraction the charged areas of the cylinder. But I haven't redone my efficiency test for this one yet... it may also be < 1% efficiency.

Nope, I don't have any formulas or tips. I just went on intuition. For all I know, double the number I have might be better. Another variable might be the amount of current your power supply has to offer. Would applying this vertically to harvest atmospheric static energy work? Would I get better results using copper, but also insulating the antenna line up to the peak point of where I want?
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 6 жыл бұрын
Sure, I harvest atmospheric electricity with it in this video here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p86Iq7Zy25zWfZs.html and explain it here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aNiGl6iZ3rO2ZnU.html. Note that this is not an electromagnetic motor so it does work with an antenna. Antennas receive electromagnetic waves. This motor works using high voltage and electrostatics instead. So the wire used for atmospheric electricity isn't called an antenna, it's just a long wire collecting charge from higher up in the atmosphere. I don't think the type of metal used makes any difference. And insulating the antenna up to the peak point is what I did. The wire has an enamel coating on it which insulates it. However, I do wonder if having more of the wire be uninsulated near the top end might collect more charge.

Very nice demonstration. Given that the high voltage has very little amperage, why can't you introduce a small transformer coupled with a few capacitors in series. You engineer some amps. What do you think?
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 4 жыл бұрын
There is a maximum voltage that will exist - that's the voltage required for breaking down the air in the gap between the blades and the surface of the cylinder. The voltage won't go any higher than that. So I guess once you determine what that voltage is then you can do something like you suggest and tune your supply to better match.

hi rimstar is it important to put bearings and what type of wood have you used
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 9 жыл бұрын
Muneer Arif There isn't a lot of force to turn the rotor (the jar) so it has to turn fairly freely. Dry ceramic bearings are good for this. Most grease filled bearings don't turn freely enough, though you could try the trick I show in my video "kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nMqmhal2m56UpWQ.html" to remove the grease and make them turn more freely.You could do without bearings if you can find some other way to make the rotor turn freely. I do that using a pen in my corona motor version 1 which you can see here "kzfaq.info/get/bejne/odmgkrKQlr3RpnU.html".The wood I use is pine because it's easy to cut. Any type of wood will work.

@RimstarOrg 3 жыл бұрын
Increasing the number of antennae would increase the current, not the voltage. But that's okay, that would still mean more power. The voltage is increased by going higher. I don't really have a good answer regarding the blades, there seem to be a lot of variables there.

Thanks. I've never measured it. However, it can't be much since in this video I show powering it using the Triboelectric effect kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bN5md9SBsZeYqYk.html. With that the current is very small. The gap size between the blades and the cylinder set the voltage limit, probably only one or two thousand volts, but with the small current I'd say the power is in the micro to milliwatts. It is a low torque motor though.

how do i use the pvc pipe and cotton facecloth to produce a high voltage??? if i bring a wire close to the charged pvc pipe then where will the other wire go ???
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 9 жыл бұрын
Akshat Ahuja The other wire goes to ground. I have a sections on different grounding tricks in these two videos: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h9hzmtebv93ScmQ.html and kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fsCKoK6Lr9ith2Q.html.To do the PCV pipe and cotton cloth technique, 1st make sure the end of the wire ends in a sharp point. I find that to get it to work I have to put the PVC pipe near the sharp point as I'm rubbing the cloth on the pipe. It doesn't work if I rub the PVC pipe and cloth vigorously for a while and then move the pipe near the sharp point. So for every every part of the stroke when the cloth is away from the part of the pipe that's near the point, the motor should get some charge.

is super corona dope realy needed ? i cant find it in my country. any alternative chems ? and what does it do ?
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 8 жыл бұрын
+Onur Cevik Wax is a good alternative, you can melt wax onto it. Epoxy/resin is also good and will last longer than wax since wax can come off easily. Wherever there are sharp edges there is a stronger electric field than where there is a flat surface. Because of that stronger electric field, charge can leak off from there. But the only place you want charge to leave the blade is at the sharp edge facing the cylinder. So by insulating those other edges you reduce some losses from leakage.

If you put the tin foil on the inside of the jar, how does the charge get to the foil to charge it positive? Is it breaking down the plastic dielectric surface?
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 9 жыл бұрын
BGT Productions The charge doesn't get to the foil inside the jar. However, the charge does move around on that foil wherever there's a blade on the outside of the jar. There is an electric field between those charges on the foil and those on the blade, since an electric field isn't blocked by the plastic dielectric. That electric field is added to the electric field between the blade and charges on the surface of the plastic, resulting in an overall stronger electric field. That stronger electric field helps move charge between the blade and the jar.
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 9 жыл бұрын
BGT Productions Yes, for this one you need a corona between the blades and the outer surface of the jar. That's how the charge is moved from one to the other. Or I guess you could say that the corona is largely the charge that is moving from one to the other. For electric fields alone to work I guess you could make a different machine with a different power supply that would use high voltage pulses to produce motion by repulsion without charge transfer. I don't think a smooth surfaced jar wouldn't work. You'd probably need the jar to have a sawtoothed surface and turn on the field only when the next diagonal surface arrived. Hard to describe in words and I'm making it up as I go, but I think something could be done.

Isn't there a way to make it work without physical connecting it to a power supply? Saw a video of one a while back with someone with a pipe and rag

Christopher Smith Yup. There are a few videos around that do it but mine using a pipe and rag is here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bN5md9SBsZeYqYk.html. It makes use of the triboelectric effect.

What is the minimum voltage one should apply to run this motor?
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg Жыл бұрын
The voltage is required to be able to ionize air across the gap between the blades and the plastic and to provide some Coulomb force for the repulsion. I'd guess at least the low thousands. You'd need current too but as you can see in my other video here, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/adpnodN-qN7NhqM.html I managed to turn it using just triboelectricity and there isn't very much current there.

if you add more aluminium foil and more electrodes will it become a stronger motor? more voltage and amperage ? also i wanted to ask you if you know how to make a tesla antena the one thath harness electrcity from air or radio waves i dont know because whith thath you could power this motor almost forever i watched otter videos but no one explain whith such detail as you thanks for sharing a way of freedom i have a file whith all the patents of tesla in pdf i can send it to you i want to put this tecnology on my bike
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 8 жыл бұрын
+ivan grompone The inside of the cylinder where the electrodes are is already completely covered so there's no more place to put aluminum foil. Removing some of the foil would make it work less well. As for adding more electrodes, there's probably some sweet spot in terms of how many is best. More than that would probably just contribute to losses. But I don't have any way other than trial and error for figuring out how many. As for a Tesla antenna, I'm not familiar with it. Tesla's Wardenclyffe tower was a transmitter as far as I know. Crystal radios are radios what use the incoming radio waves to power themselves but the power is very low. Re patents, I have a book with all of Tesla's patents but I haven't read them all.

Probably not. It works by producing ions in the gap between the blade and the surface of the cylinder and molecules (e.g. air molecules) are needed for that.

rimstar can we use an AC stabalizer as a high voltage power supply pls tell fast
@RimstarOrg

Muneer Arif No. An AC stabilizer puts out AC whereas this need DC. Also, I suspect the DC voltage required is in the low thousands of volts.

now THAT's a sexy motor! Would love to see you connect it to Lord Kelvin's Thunderstorm. I'm trying to figure out how/why this works. I don't see how it could be moved by corona because the inner foil is insulated from the current in the blades by the plastic jar. I can believe there is an electrostatic induction in the foil as the current flows, and likewise in the shaft (insulated by the air in the jar). But I don't understand where the motion comes from. Obviously it works, but where is the torque coming from? Also, I'm not sure why the blades are used? Wouldn't this work just as well with bare wires instead of the blades?
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 9 жыл бұрын
hi li Very thin bare wires would also work. The advantage of the blades is that you can angle them, which gives an initial direction for the motor to move. If you use wires or if you make the blades point straight at the motor then the initial direction is left up to chance.The foil isn't necessary to get it working, but gives you enhanced performance due to that electrostatic induction. The foil results in a stronger electric field between the blade and the foil than you'd have if it was just between the blade and the atoms of the plastic. That gives more corona and more repulsion.I've yet to make a video explaining how it works but I do have an explanation on my website here rimstar.org/science_electronics_projects/corona_motor_electrostatic_atmospheric_motor.htm
@hili467
@hili467 9 жыл бұрын
interesting, so the charge flies directly out of the blades, like a tangent to the surface of the jar? I always thought electrostatic charge acted radially. Interesting.
@hili467
@hili467 9 жыл бұрын
OOOH cool cool cool. great description page. I didn't realize the blades alternated that way. That makes so much more sense now. The charge gets stuck on the insulator as it tries to move to the foil and that attractive force between the charge and the positive blade pulls them together. perfect. Thanks so much for your reply. I've never seen one of these before. I've only heard of them once. really awesome.
@hili467
@hili467 9 жыл бұрын
I see... the angle of the blades puts the charge closer to the next positive blade than the preceding blade, so even if the electrostatic charge travels radially into the foil, the geometry still gives it a bias in one direction. fantastic! will have to save my money so I can try to make one of these some day.

@@RimstarOrg at what scale and Is it possible to use Corona or atmo motors in Fans like ceiling fan or room air coolers with dc supply. As they are light weight and obtain high speed. Less weight means do they consume less electricity as compared to other dc or bldc motors like they are heavier then this. please answer both?
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg Жыл бұрын
I suspect these (electrostatic motors) are less efficient than electromagnet motors (the kind you find everywhere) despite the weight difference. The conduction of ions between the blades and the cylinders allows for a lot of loss.

I'm interested in constructing your Corona Motor V2 and would like to ask for the measurements / dimensions of your base (the details the wood part) - so that I can recreate it perfectly). I hope to speak to you soon!
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 6 жыл бұрын
As you can probably guess from 1:40 in the video, I designed and drew it all out on the piece of wood, using the diameter of the cylinder as a starting point (i.e. I made it big enough so that the blades would be close to the cylinder while still being adjustable). So if your cylinder is a different diameter then you'll have to come up with dimensions which work for it. If you still need dimensions then let me know and I'll put something on my website. But I'm super busy so it may take a while.

Muneer Arif If you mean the plastic that the blades are attached to, I cut them from plastic sheets that I bought at a hobby store. But anything that's not electrically conductive (don't use metal) will work e.g. plastic, wood. Look around your place or in stores for anything you can use as is or you can cut pieces from e.g. popsicle sticks, straws, plastic containers, ... Maybe even corrugated cardboard from boxes will be rigid enough. Keep an open mind when looking. The plastic I used for the circuit boards in my latest video about wireless transmission of electricity was cut from plastic that was a container for an appliance I took apart.
