Thanks once again for your kind words. I wanted to post a video on flaring a long time ago but there were lots of videos on the subject. I was watching some of them this week as I realized no one prepares the cut off tube like I think it should be so I decided to post my version. Thanks for watching.

When I started out as a young mechanic there was a lot of call for making flares and working with brake lines. In those days and up until the late 90s once a vehicle approached 10 years old the brake lines would start to fail. On the vehicles of today you almost never see it as the tubing is made of a much more corrosion resistant material. It is becoming sort of a lost skill.

Yes, thanks for the comment by the way. I learned back in the 70s as a young mechanic that if you don't take the time to square up the tube you get a flare that is off center. Most of the time they will seal anyway but sometimes not.

Thank you Richard for showing me how to make a double flare and a bubble flare with the same tool. I own a 2002 f150 and I am in the process of replacing the "rear-rearward" (that's what it's called, lol) brake line . Well this brake line can be purchased ready to install, but the price was $50+ for just this one line! But I have other lines to replace so I bought a 25ft roll of co/ni brake line with fittings and that tool from Amazon for around $30. BUT THEN I GOT THE BRAKE LINE OFF AND TO MY SUPRISE IT HAD A DOUBLE FLARE ON ONE END AND A BUBBLE FLARE ON THE OTHER END! I would have had to buy another tool to make the bubble flare if it wasn't for your excellent video , thank you again for sharing your wisdom 😀 👍

Great video, thanks for sharing. Always good to see and hear other's method's and advice. FWIW the Chinese kits may not be as bad as you think. I've had my Harbor Freight kit in use since the late 90's or possibly early 2000's and it's still in great shape. Not a shop environment of course, but an active DYIer.

@@MrUbiquitousTech Oh yes, as long as the tool is not abused. Now that I am retired I do not have access to the pro equipment from the shop. I have since purchased a number of tool kits. They have all held up very well. Like my wheel bearing kit for instance, it has held up quite nicely as I always lubricate the jack screw and crank it by hand. However several people have wrote that they have stripped that jack screw on the very first use. I think this is because they likely used a power tool without any lubrication.

Thank you, I try to use the old nuts that way they always fit. I have encountered auto parts people that don't know that the nuts for double and bubble flares are different. They should watch your video. I guess that you could put a double flare nut in the tubing clamp (flat side up) and file the nut down flat. A bit of oil on the thread and the tip of the tool press helps. A mess on your bench?! HA.
@richardspaulding5035
@richardspaulding5035 Жыл бұрын
I have done that a lot over the years regarding re using the old nuts. In recent times I have ordered assortments on eBay. I agree about the parts store clerks. If you were to walk into your local parts store and ask for a 10mm double flare nut you get some pretty puzzled looks. You might as well try to call the north pole and ask to speak to Santa Clause.

When would you use each of these . Or just use the double flare.
@richardspaulding5035
@richardspaulding5035 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question; In most cases you don't have a choice. You must use the type of flare that was in use in the component you are replacing. I recently replaced a master cylinder, the output lines used a bubble flare. if I were replacing those lines I would in turn have to make a bubble flares. I recently had to replace the brake lines from front to rear on a BMW, in that instance a double flare was called for. Most unions (a fitting that joins to lines together) use double fares. I hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching my channel.

After some 30 odd years of use the handle broke on the tool I had purchased in the 1970s. As a result, I purchased one off the shelves at a local auto parts store. That tool turned out to be made of very soft metal ad was pretty much useless. I then found a way to repair my old one so I could continue using it as that was the tool you saw in the video. Apparently because the one I had recently purchased turned out to be junk I made the incorrect assumption that all the new ones were junk. Thanks for the post, I will check out the Harbor Freight tool.

@richardspaulding5035 Just trying to watch out for the millennials. Most of them won't read the comments, so the "goes without saying" stuff really needs to be included in the videos. Only thing here is that the bubble flare this creates is not quite the same as you get with an actual ISO/DIN bubble flare tool. I understand that this short cut might work for some, but it has also failed many others. I think it should at least be made clear to viewers that this is not the proper way to make a bubble flare, and doing this is knowingly using a short cut to get a result that is close. I personally have the tool shown here (mine is OLD Sears branded) and the OTC ISO bubble flaring tool, since for me, getting close does not give me comfort with brake lines, I want the proper flare to the best I am able to do. Having both tools allows me to speak from experience, doing and seeing the results to not be exactly the same. Otherwise, great video showing the details of the process, so many flares fail due to not properly squaring the line, deburring, etc.
