Easy to follow your video. To save $$ on expensive mahogany dominoes I’m thinking I could just stain the exposed part of a normal beech domino to create the contrasting effect prior to installing in the mortise.

I make hundreds of drawers like this, since 2009. I rabbet the sides and glue up the drawer. I add the Domino mortises in half the steps you are taking after the drawer is assembled and then add the tenons.

I've been using the Domino for about two years now and of course have never read any of the documentation that came with the tool. I've been guessing and checking where the center of the tool is and didn't know how easy it was to find the center of the bit based on the existing geometry of the tool. Thanks for the tip!

Just made some drawers yesterday for the first time with the domino, though I cheated and pin nailed all the drawer sides completely together first, then ran the domino through both parts of each joint simultaneously.
@bigredracingdog466

I use a similar technique except I make my mortises in both boards at once. I clamp the face board down on top of my bench so the end is flush with the edge of the bench. Then I clamp the side board to the side of my bench so the end is flush with the face board. Then I bore my mortises through the side board into the face board. Depending on the stock thickness, I select a depth that will leave the domino slightly proud of the side. I trim it off with a flush cut saw.

They are not really the best. They are just about the most expensive. That's all. Festool still owns the patent rights for their Domino tool but when that expires, you will see many very big and very good competitors. I'll take my Bosch 12" sliding miter saw, my Makita 40V tracksaw and my Bosch 6" sander over Festool for a lot less money any day!
@louisolivierfortin

Some not so athetic people buy 6000$ road bikes. There is always a way yo go cheaper in everything. If you can afford a domino it makes a lot of jobs easier and makes you tackle projects that you maybe wouldn’t have done without it. Plus, if you really regret your buy, you can turn around and sell it for 80% of whay it cost to buy or even more. (Yes I bought one and love it, and yes it’s expensive 😅)

Or just clamp and glue them together. For those who don't trust glue only, after the glue sets drill and tap in dowels with glue with a cheap dowel jig. Saw the ends off and sand flush. I prefer the quarter, quarter, quarter method using 1/2 baltic birch for drawers and 1/2" bottoms for big drawers, but whatever floats your boat. I can't justify buying a $1000+ Festool Domino when I can do the same using other options with tools I already have. I glue up table tops using 3/8" oak dowels with a $200 DowelMax, which doesn't take much longer. I think people buy a Festool Domino for a particular task, like table breadboards, where dominos can allow for wood movement, then they find other things they can use their investment for stuff where cheaper options are out there. IMO. I have a ton of woodworking tools but have never found a project where a Festool Domino would a much better choice. I know there are many Festool fanboys out there but I remain in the camp where there are similar performing tools that do the same thing with equal or better quality for mostly 1/2 the price from Bosch, Makita and even Dewalt.
@HuntsWorkshop
@HuntsWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah those are good options as well. We’ve sold drawers with dovetail, box, domino detail, but haven’t tried dowels. Quarter method is great if the design doesn’t call for a decorative detail.
@bobbray9666
@bobbray9666 2 жыл бұрын
@@HuntsWorkshop Dovetails look nice but they are more for aesthetics and very tedious to make. They served a purpose in the past before modern glues were introduced for keeping drawers from pulling apart as with hide glue and nails. To make Q,Q,Q drawers from plywood look more refined, I like to edge band the tops with a different wood species and I've even inlayed that same different species with a 1/4 x 1/4 inch strip along the sides. There are many ways to make drawers. Solid wood look like the highest quality like solid 1/2" maple but I'd only use that for furniture vs. something like kitchen cabinets. Then there are the drawer slides to consider. I'm going to use Blum undermount slides, which don't bind when grabbing one side of a drawer like side mounted slides. They are also very smooth to operate and are invisible. Unfortunately, the 82 under mounts I ordered in January won't be shipped in entirety until September!
@louisolivierfortin
@louisolivierfortin 2 жыл бұрын
This argument always comes up. In the end it’s a tool. A quality one. You could say the same with a basic table saw: purists prefer sawing and planing their stuff by hand. That doesnt make the tablesaw less of an amazing tool. If you can afford a domino and find other uses for it other than the obvious stuff, why not?? All I’m saying is there is always a “cheaper option” that makes the job done. So this argument is not very useful. Can’t we just appreciate a tool and it’s many uses?
