I just received my beginners kit to make energizing orange 🍊 soap a couple days ago. I will use no other brand of soap!!! The steps were so easy and my soap came out so beautifully and cleans so well. I was so proud of myself I started just giving out bars to my family to try and love as well as I did. I will always come back to bramble berry to purchase more items on my soap journey. Thank you Anne-Marie 💕

Just made this lovely little soap for our new great-niece. It took nearly 10 minutes to lightly trace... double checked the quantities and all good there. The differences were omitting the Sodium Lactate and adding the clay and oatmeal to the melted oils before the lye solution. I did this because with a new recipe I'm never sure how quickly the batter will trace.

Hi Ann Marie. I have just body lotion but I used candilla wax instead of the BTMS 50 on your website, as I find it lathery, not sinking in to the skin well. I stirred the wax, oil and distilled water until it was completely cool, but it separated. Can you tell me at what % can I use BTMS 50 at it's lowest because I don;t like my lotion lathery. Thank you.

I am making this recipe (tripled to 3.75#) and baffled by how much total water will be in the recipe: almost 12 oz plus another 12 Tbsp in the clay. I would love to hear if this is accurate before I make the recipe. I am tempted to just do the 4 or 5 Tbsp in your original smaller recipe. Any advice here Soap Queen? I did just make this recipe, increased to 3.75#, and I chose to use part of the recipe water to soak the Bentonite instead of adding additional water - so we'll see. I am also wondering if you insulate this soap or just let it saponify at room temp uncovered.?? Another unknown, ha. Hmmm hmmm, what to do. Thanks for the great video, and I look forward to seeing how mine turns out.

I read a separate article on your soap blog regarding the different clay choices and their properties (www.soapqueen.com/tag/bentonite-clay/). It mentioned that the use of bentonite clay is good for oily skin but can be drying for those with normal to dry. Would adding the bentonite clay dry out the skin? I'd like to make this for my daughter who has bad eczema and I don't want anything that will be drying? Do the other ingredients used in this recipe "cancel out" the absorbing properties of the clay?

Completely unrelated to this soap, but I have a soap question. I make a green tea and fig bar with your oval soap mold. I ALWAYS get soda ash on the tops. I even spray with the isopropyl alcohol I purchased from your site. Is there something that can help it?
@bramble-berry
@bramble-berry 7 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! It can help to water discount the soap, increase your temperatures to 125-130F and pour the soap when it's a bit thicker. All of those steps help prevent soda ash. If you still get it, don't worry. You can steam it off or wipe the soap with an old nylon to remove the ash. =) Read more about preventing soda ash here: www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/tips-and-tricks/explaining-and-preventing-soda-ash/

Is there a substitute for Shea butter?

As someone who has spent time in a chem lab working with lye it really bothers me that she is wearing a thin long sleeve shirt under an apron and saying it's for safety. If she did get lye on her sleeves, she would have to take off the apron and then her shirt to get the lye soaked fabric off. It's why we wear heavy lab coats over shirts short sleeve shirts. It's easy to take off the lab coat so as to minimize the amount of time lye is in contact with our skin.

Could you use regular organic extra virgin olive oil for this?

Yes, pomace and virgin are the same type of oil but pomace works better

Could you use a 100% chamomile tea if you can't readily get chamomile flowers? If so how many would you need? And could you infuse the oil the same way? And do you really need to add Shea butter to the soap?

I want to answer your question because I've made this soap with my own ingredients. Yes, you can use just chamomile tea bags if that's all you have. I do it all the time. I don't use any of the expensive butters or oils in my soaps and the substitutes work quite well. My soaps are very mild. What I use instead is shortening, like Crisco's new formulation, which uses hydrogenated palm & soy oils. The resulting soap is vegan, mild and, though technically not what the industry calls Castile soap, it's still just as mild. However, be aware that you need to read the ingredients to make sure it has no tallow or lard, only because they can a bit harsher than veg oils. Use olive oil at 80% and the shortening (at Walmart they carry a Great Value shortening that similar to Crisco) at 20% and you'll have a lovely bar of soap. One more thing. A soap with this much olive oil has to cure for at LEAST 6 months before it's apt for use. The reason is that olive oil, even pomace, takes a LOONG time to harden enough so it doesn't just dissolve in a month. I use filtered seawater (from the ocean!) and even then my bars aren't ready to use before those 6 months. Just a heads up. Happy soaping!

Can I use olive oil instead of olive oil pomace and can I skip the sodium lactate. I guess my question is if I use olive oil instead of olive oil pomace and skip sodium lactate without having to run it through a lye Calc.

I typically add my Kaolin clay directly into the lye water...are there any disadvantages to adding the Bentonite or Kaolin clays directly to the lye water instead of mixing separately? Thank you!

If that works well you can definitely add the clay to the lye water! We add it at trace to help prevent acceleration. If you find your soap doesn't move too fast, clay in the lye water will definitely work. =)
