Because many of my computer build and repair videos can be as long as a major motion pictures, viewers have often joked they need to make popcorn first before viewing them.
To that end, in this video I am going to show you how to make popcorn that tastes exactly like it does at the movie theater!
Be sure to subscribe to my 'Cooking with Carey' for more great how-to's for finicky eaters!

I worked in a movie theater in the '60s, back when coconut oil wasn't frowned upon. We used coconut oil and white popcorn. Salt was added to the coconut oil at the beginning so that the salt ended up on every kernel. Plus we used REAL BUTTER! Best popcorn ever!

After taking two minutes of time to order Flavicol and Coconut OIl on Amazon and waiting for it to arrive the next day, this video has now brought more joy into my family's life than any video on KZfaq ever has. This technique even beats Alton Brown's "Perfect Popcorn" recipe using a Wok and Peanut Butter oil. Thanks for the great instructions and tips!

Flavacol also has a caramel flavor which is insanely good. Smart and final sells it. Wait until the popcorn just starts to pop and add it. It is sugar based so it’ll burn easy if you’re not careful. I love both flavacols. The whirly pop he mentioned is greatness. Bed Bath & Beyond sell them.

This has been an obsession of mine for a long time and all I offer are tweaks. Probably the best video I've seen yet. He's spot on about the oil but he forgot to mention that a little too much is better than not enough (too little, popcorn burns, a little too much, you'll never know). The reason he only fills 2/3 of the bottom with kernels is so it won't run over the top. Nothing wrong with that unless your bowl is larger. I use a huge bowl so I transfer some over during the popping process. I use a splatter guard instead of a lid (since I don't have a lid like he has). Absolutely no need to shake so much. The popping kernels are moving the pop corn around at the beginning so no shaking needed. Once the kernels start popping drop the heat a little (6 to 4 or 4.5). If you do this you won't need to shake more than a few times. Finally, throw away the store bought crap he's pouring on at the end. Make a 50/50 mixture of coconut oil and real butter as a topping, you can even add a little Flavocal if you want. I have a clear ketchup dispenser I use. Before I start popping I add oil and butter, put it in the microwave on soften setting and I pull it out before all butter is melted. I put the lid on and swish it until better melts. The other great thing he forgot to mention is that if you make it this way with fresh kernels it will stay good for days. White kernels pop smaller than yellow so keep that in mind when adding kernels.

I actually did notice out of the many brands of kernels I've tried in my Nostalgia brand standing popcorn maker, Jolly Time (the one in the video) did yield noticeably better popcorn. I used to think there wasn't a huge difference either, but I've tried Orville kernels and many of the store brands. Jolly Time is the best that I've used.

I use the mega-pop pre packaged 8 ox bags which are my favorite. I tried many different types and don't think I tried Jolly Time as I could not get sample packages, but did try Orville Redinbocker and was surprised they were not as good and I did notice the kernels to be different texture. This is confusing as my favorite theater popcorn is Century Theaters and they claim to use it.

I consider myself an expert at popping corn, having popped on average 3 times a week for 40 years. I have never consulted a video or asked for advice; just pure R&D for 40 years. My method is probably 95% the same as this video. We only differ because I am not trying for "movie theater" flavor. I also do not measure and can make quick decisions based on heat source (electric, gas, induction) as well as pot size and shape. I also make corrections based on barometric levels that day. My personal favorite topping is a soy sauce-flavored salt that can only be obtained online in Japan. My sister-in-law ships me 2 dozen bottles every year! Great job, man. I'd "popcorn party" with you any time.

WWWWOOOOOOOWWWWWW!!!!!! Oh my word. I wish I could send you a photo. We just did 3 batches and it burned, then don't pop then then then . My better half found your video and I luckily have Coconut cooking oil like always in home. The popcorn reacts unbelievable to it. The sunflower oil was our problem. Thank you so so much!!!!!! I subscribed. This was the first video I saw of you ...the popcorn one lol. So I can only imagine what else we will learn here. We startiing tonight. Thank you again. Great Video, Thanks... That bowl you used I do a similar thing. 1/3 cup popcorn with a large dash of your buttered flavored oil and buttered flavored salt. No mess and Great popcorn. the oil keeps the popcorn moist enough for the butter-flavored salt to stick to the popcorn and you also get the Great smell of the butter while it is popping. This may not be as great as yours but it sure is easy and a little mess. also, low cal and it still tastes good the next day. Enjoy

This is the best instructional video on KZfaq, and I've seen thousands of them. Kudos, Carey. Visually perfect video (appreciate the multiple angles), clear instruction, and inserts showing what utensils are being used and how to get them. No superfluous banter or attempts at being clever or funny. Just great information presented visually. And a dog. As a fellow popcorn aficionado, I appreciate how Carey has explained a simple process properly. Like making a great martini, it's not really the ingredients but the technique and attention to detail that makes great popcorn. Well done, sir.

When you heat the coconut oil, after it's fully melted you throw in a few test kernels. Once those kernels pop you know your pot/oil is ready. That's when you throw in the rest. Your "movie theater butter" is the crap they have at low-rent theaters. Clarified butter fat is what good theaters use. Lots of recipes out there, or it on amazon. Since it's clarified it will survive shipping.

I used to have a Nostalgia 8oz Popcorn Machine and it failed after the warranty. It was a gift that at first I thought was a waste of money, but was shocked at the taste. I was going to repair it, but the parts were no longer available and I purchased a much better Paragon Theater Pop 6. The Nostalgia had a major issue in the lid/design and small kettle was inadequate wasting literally half of the kernels, and the Paragon has almost no waste and is much better. To my point, during the gap of trying to live life without a real popcorn maker, I would use my pre packaged 8oz mega pop packages. I used a pot just like he is, and was amazed at the difference in taste and texture of the popcorn, which was not a good thing. As he mentioned, the steam is what I think was the major issue as the kernels were heavy in texture, and again the taste somehow was lost. The popcorn machine is so much better even when using the identical popcorn recipe. It just goes to show the process is of the highest importance with the pot just a failure. So, if you are the type to have popcorn every week, look into a popcorn maker and there will be no going back.

In my neck of the woods, Koepsell sells what I assume is that 'Flavorcol' salt in small glass shaker jars for a few bucks. I also find that once the popcorn has cooled down a bit, I put it in a gallon sized Ziploc plastic bag and pour in the butter topping (Orville Reddenbacher brand), seal the bag, and give it a good shake. This way all popcorn is coated with the butter topping.

My "secret" and delicious movie theatre style popcorn recipe (proportions are for the whirleygig popcorn popper, change as appropriate): 8g ghee (clarified butter - same as regular butter but with water removed so it doesn't burn), 8g coconut oil, 1 small teaspoon flavacol, 125 ml popcorn (= 1/2 us cup). Put ghee, oil & flavacol in the pan and preheat very gently until slightly warm, then turn up to close to maximum and add 2 or 3 kernels. Stir / shake continuously until 1 "tester" kernels pops, then quickly add the rest, stir / shake hard until popped and immediately pour into a different bowl. You can add butter topping (Orville Redenbacher is good, other brands also fine) if you like but I usually don't as it's delicious without. Yum!!! I carefully researched this trying many different variations and this is method is easy, reliable and incredibly delicious - it tastes exactly like the cinema (or even better, as it's always freshly popped!).

Thank you for the secret of movie theater popcorn, the addictive smell that would get one into the lobby of a movie theater. :) I now know to stay away from it altogether. I looked up Flavacol and it contains highly refined soy oil and food coloring dyes, both of which I need to avoid; coconut oil, which you use for popping the corn, has more cholesterol than real butter, both are to be refrained from to avoid a heart attack. Good quality popcorn tastes very good made in an air popper with or without a little extra virgin olive oil and wheat free tamari put on later when the popping is done. To each their own. :) But again, thanks for the information. Knowledge is indeed power, lol.
