Our second video in the Intro to Prosthetic Transfer series teaches the basics of Plaster Mold Making and Latex Prosthetic Application. We put a bullet hole on a forehead which was sculpted in our first video: Intro to Prosthetic Transfers - Basic Sculpting #1. Special attention is given to blending edges and makeup application using Rubber Mask Grease Paint. If you choose to create your own rubber mask grease paint just mix a little Castor Oil and a flesh tone powder compact. Remember to apply translucent powder between each layer of makeup you apply.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
When removing the makeup it is important to use a good MAKEUP REMOVER that was specially developed for removing prosthetic adhesives. Regular makeup removers WILL NOT work on these adhesives. An example of some makeup adhesive removers are: "Detachol Adhesive Remover" and "Bond Off". If you don't give your actors a good adhesive remover then their experience will not be pleasant and you may not be able to work with them again. An actors comfort is most important since they are taking the time to allow you to apply makeup on them. At least give your actor the comfort of getting the stuff off in a timely manor with out loosing skin or rashing out from the struggle of getting the adhesive off their face and/or body.

I've been watching all of your videos! I must admit that I'm a little mad that these videos didn't exist when I stated in special effects makeup. They're fantastic, they're well done, the technique is incredible, and properly done. Many people are going to seriously benefit from your videos. -Kate Owner of Doc's Monster Design

Thank you Kate. I also have struggled for years trying to learn makeup effects, buying effects videos hoping to learn something and often I am disappointed by poor content. I love makeup effects and I'm to the point where I want to share my knowledge. Enjoy :)

Oh I know the feeling, what helps me out the most are forensic books for sculpting references, they're pretty gruesome to look at, but I've always tried to get as much realism as I can. Your videos would have been such a great tool for me, since when I learned, it was basically all trial and error. And as much as I like the man personally, Stuart Bray's videos don't show enough detail on how to get a good mold for prosthetics. You have a fantastic technique, which took me years to develop because a lot of the information wasn't really available. It took me so much time to perfect mold keys and overflows, but you show the process well. And that's one of the most important steps is having a good mold, I've seen many good prosthetic sculpts ruined by subpar molds

Great video! Super helpful I'm going to try making one now. Can I make a suggestion about how to make the prosthetic piece blend into the skin better? Use 99% alcohol and melt away the thin edges, it will make it look almost seem less!
@EggHeadFX
@EggHeadFX 5 жыл бұрын
Alcohol does not blend rubber latex appliances. And acetone doesn’t either it will just burn the skin. I get this a lot from people that are learning.

You know that if you coat a paint brush in dish soap and then use latex with the brush it won’t stick as much. You just have to wash it out after your done immediately or after a long time bc it will chunk

I really love your vid i recently subscribed to your Chanel. I have a question to ask, the casting your created with the clay how long can it last before it gets damaged or its only used once and when ever you want to create another effect you make a new one. Forgive my ignorance I'm an upcoming sfx mua
@EggHeadFX
@EggHeadFX 8 жыл бұрын
Hey Gertrude, good question. Oil based clay can be used over and over again. The clay will eventually get chunks of plaster and dirt in it with may uses. Every year or so I will take my used clay, melt it down and pour it through a nylon or cheese cloth to strain the garbage out of it. Once cooled down it's ready to go again. Water clay on the other hand is different. Once water based clays dry out the will become unusable and thrown out but oil based clays can be used for many sculpting. :) Thanks for subscribing and posting. Cheers.

Can you reuse clay after spraying it with Crystal Clear?
@EggHeadFX
@EggHeadFX 7 жыл бұрын
I often collect all my used clay, melt it down and filter it through a panty hose and reuse it. You don't have to use Crystal Clear, it's not that necessary. It helps when cleaning clay out of your molds. :)

+Jeff Caoili Hey Jeff, It's Prosaid or Pros-aid Prosthetic Adhesive. You can purchase it on line or most costume stores should have it. There is sometimes Pros-aid #1 or #2. I don't really know the difference and I have used both and they work the same to me.

Do you have to use that specific sealer? I saw somewhere that people use Pam

Also. Can you say what brand of plaster you used ?
@EggHeadFX
@EggHeadFX 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Bella, Pam isn't a sealer it's sometimes used as a mold release. I have used pam as a mold release but most of the time I use Petroleum jelly, it's the easiest/simplest product to use to keep things from sticking when molding a prosthetic or keeping a two part mold from sticking to it's self when creating a plaster mold. Paint Petroleum Jelly on one side of the mold and the other side won't stick. :)

Could you use plaster of Paris

I don't recommend plaster of paris because it is a very weak and brittle plaster and details are poor. It is mostly used for children crafts and stuff like that. The plaster we use is more like a stone. It holds detail and isn't brittle like Plaster of Paris. When you spend money on supplies and a lot of time sculpting your piece, you don't want to have it all ruined by using crappy plaster that will not keep good detail and may crumble apart.
