Its great seeing the children being gently educated in the ways of the kitchen, AND the special memories of all of you working together. These memories will warm them when they need some warmth. Good job, Dad! : )

@Joel Hammer Pretty sure it's a Swedish thing. Partly 'cause of the name (Hasselback refers to the famous restaurant Hasselbacken in Stockholm). I also can't find any reference to it being danish online, and I've never heard any such claims previously. Though, it isn't that hard to imagine people discovering this little trick elsewhere as well.

You can achieve the same cuts into the potato if you place the potato onto the mouth of your wooden spoon. the sides of the mouth are naturally higher than the base so it won't cut through all the way. much easier process.

The thing I have done with this potato dish is to get (from the garden) two largish twigs of rosemary and criss cross them across the oven tray not only does it taste divine but the whole house smells of rosemary,,,I have never used nuts though just the melted butter, garlic and pepper to cook...

When you make a big batch. Like when you make it in a restaurant. It's easier to do it without anything but a knife. You get stuck with the knife in spoons and other things. Offcourse you have to have some knife skills. But you get it quite fast. And in Sweden we make a lot more cuts in the potatoe. About teen to twelve cuts in a normal sized potatoe

Years ago I did the "sliced up" potatoes a bit differently. Slice them same way, then put pats of butter between slices, then grated parmegano cheese. After baking, they also come out golden crispy outside and tender inside. Just a different way.

*FYI:* _Hasselback Potato or Potato à la Hasselbacken (Swedish: Hasselbackspotatis) are a type of baked potato, where the potatoes are about halfway cut through into thin slices; butter, breadcrumbs, and almonds are added on top of the potatoes._ _Hasselbackspotatis was created in 1953 by Leif Elisson from Värmland, which was trainee chef at restaurant Hasselbacken on Djurgården in Stockholm._

Found the base for this idea way back on a chan, with way thinner slices. The original recipe only called for salt, pepper and olive oil. I add some garlic and Herbs of the Provence (Kräuter der Provence), makes a fancy meal out of the cheapest stuff you can buy over here in Germany. :)

Swede here, keeping it super simple... I only have butter, salt and breadcrumbs. But that's the beauty of it all, whatever you like goes! I usually have it to a filet mignon, and some herb butter (actually made my very own parsley butter this weekend, for the first time churning my own butter from cream). Sigh, it's 1 AM and now I'm hungry again...

This simple but still good dish has a fairly young history. The origin of the Hasselback potatoes can be traced to the 1950s and a Swede It was the future chef Leif Elisson from the countryside who came to court during his education in Stockholm. The year was 1953 where Leif came to thinly slice the potatoes, cover them in butter and sprinkle breadcrumbs over it and then grill it in the oven. The name Hasselbackspotatisen is named after the restaurant where Leif was a cooking student. Namely restaurant Hasselback at Djurgården in Stockholm.

JCup Traditionally the slices should be thinner creating even more crispy surface areas. I once saw the guys over at Sorted food make centimeter thick slices. A terrifyingly cringe-y experience. Also, of course, butter instead of olive oil. I serve my hasselbackspotatis with boeuf bourguignon. :)

We created 'hasselback style' spuds before we even knew what they were and called them 'hedgehog potatoes' to get the kids to eat them. Rather simple, just sliced down, and then spread soft garlic butter over the top so it gets pushed into the gaps. Lots of black pepper and a little salt. Roasty roasty for a little time, and kids loved them with Kippers on the side.

Little tip, after you have cut them on top turn them 90 degrees (if they are horizontal in front of you they will be vertical and vice versa) and then flip them over and cut them again you end up with the flavor going through the entire potato even more and it looks even better :). Just be careful with how you flip them (cuts should be perpendicular to what you've already done other wise your potato gets chopped :p ) :)
