How do you paint gelatin prosthetics? Can you use regular acrylics or do you need to use spfx specific makeup?
@SpecialFxNerds8 жыл бұрын
Hey, I would be careful with just using simple acrylics cause to 90% they will crack. You can check out our very first tutorial "How to create a bloody hand" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZtZjhLll2rucY5c.html. We did´t use FX Gelatin in this one but the principle is the same. If you need materials maybe check this out: Make Up: www.amazon.com/Grimas-Water-Face-Paint-Palette/dp/B00LFOVVUI/ref=pd_sim_sbs_194_2?ie=UTF8&dpID=41jVOHMLfWL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR115%2C160_&refRID=19W13NRR3GWB879402A1 (I would recommend water-based makeup cause you can wash it of much easier than oil-based) Fixing Powder: www.amazon.com/Grimas-Fixing-Powder-transparent-water-repellent/dp/B01D0SGH1Y?ie=UTF8&keywords=fixing%20powder%20grimas&qid=1465500462&ref_=sr_1_cc_2_a_it&s=aps&sr=1-2-catcorr (they are quite expensive since they are from the Netherlands) But if you want to pre paint it like in the tree bark tutorial. Take acrylic paint and mix it with a bit of PROS AIDE: www.amazon.com/Pros-Aide-Original-Adhesive-oz-Tronics/dp/B011M4QBX2?ie=UTF8&keywords=pros%20aide&qid=1465500953&ref_=sr_1_4_s_it&s=beauty&sr=1-4 (use alcohol to clean the brush) That should do the job. Hope it was a bit helpful. :)

How well does it hold up in heat? I live in Texas and it can get pretty hot. Would it start melting if used in 90-100°F weather?
@SpecialFxNerds8 жыл бұрын
Hey, honestly we never used our prosthetics in these kind of conditions but I would guess it won't melt on your face like a bar of chocolate. The only thing that might happen depending on ... how long you're wearing it, how long it will be exposed directly to the sun and how well it was applied etc. ... is that it will get pretty sticky and maybe it won't hold on to the skin that well anymore cause it gets hot and sweaty under the gelatin so it might come of quicker. I would recommend: take a small fan with you and keep it cool and dry as long as possible. And keep yourself or your actor as cool and dry as possible. And please let me know if I just told you bulls**t right now in case your prosthetic melted in 3 sec. after you stepped outside :D Than I´m really really sorry. But like I said can't tell you for sure cause we never used fx gelatin in these kind of conditions.
@rickjoslin96484 жыл бұрын
Good question. Im n texas as well and its so hot.
@DeadLightStudio3 жыл бұрын
Gelatin sets when cold 15°C/60°F and melts at 25°C-40°C/77°F-104°F. So if it stays in range it should okay to stay on your skin. The big enemy besides heat is probably your sweat.

+Aurora Angulo Hi, have you seen the "Gelatin Prosthetic" Tutorial (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oNZjg7teuJ-XZIk.html) ? The prosthetic we made in this tutorial is still in our office and looks perfect. (since 5 months) If the FX gelatin is hard you can keep it for a long time. You can always reheat it to mold something new but like I already said as soon as the gelatin is hard you can keep it for a long time. Would love to see the project. You can send a picture if you want to. Good luck !!!

Danny trova whip up latex with a hand mixer, then once it's in the mold place it in the oven on warm
@SpecialFxNerds7 жыл бұрын
But be careful. Don't mix it up with your kitchen mixer and don't bake it in your kitchen oven. You should use an extra mixer and an extra oven cause that stuff is toxic and you shouldn't use the gear with any food after using it with the latex. And usually you add a bit more than just latex like foam agent, gel agent and cure agent. But since we don't have those ingredients and won't get them any time soon, we won't be able to do a tutorial on that. Sorry! But there are a lot of tutorials or recipes on the internet so research a little and just try it out. Good Luck :D

At point 2.31 in video put it back in the microwave (8 seconds at a time) until it has melted again then add a drop or 2 of washing up liquid then whisk. It will increase in volume due to the air by up to 2 thirds. Pop it in fridge or freezer to set again. When you want to use it just re-melt in microwave and use it in the mold the same way you would normal gelatin. This is foam gelatin NOT latex it will act the same as a gelatin prosthetic but will be lighter

While ammonia is toxic in high concentration, it is also a gas and will not contaminate your oven. You might ruin your mixer if you don't clean it up soon after use, though.
