I discovered these two different methods for opening coils and thought they were both so amazing that I decided to do a video on them. In this video, I show you how to make simple coil-opening tools and how to use them. Why would you even need to know how to open a coil, you may ask? Well, there are certain chains that are built from coils. Also, you just might need to make springs for something (your car, mega yacht or simply a clasp). You can also use them as a design element. I could go on...
Anyway, I found these two great hacks online and thought I'd share them with you all. Tool one has been modified from the original design and the other just needed some instructions on how to make it. It took me an hour to figure out how the one I named "The Thingy" worked and how to make it. It looks like a "Torsion Spring" but, doesn't work like one so, it needed a different name.

It’s an ingenious trick that I just picked up myself watching a bunch of Russian goldsmith videos recently! I don’t understand Russian but I can watch and learn! 🤣 I’m on my way to making a cardinal chain soon as I fell in love with the end result the smiths posted! And this is a very useful technique to achieve the results in the end! At least your explanation is in English that most of us North Americans can decipher!! 😂👍

Hi Denise. I ran into the Russian guys too and give them credit for their ideas, at the end of the description. I thought they were so cool that, even if you were not making a chain, you'd want to try them just because they are so much fun. It took me quite a while to figure out what was happening - especially for the "thingy tool" as all I had to go on was a brief image of him using it (and talking about it in Russian). It was challenging but, I was driven! Glad someone else watches their videos as they are pretty amazing and they make some beautiful chains. Thanks! Have fun. We must learn Russian!!!

@@NancyHamiltonJewelry it's always exciting to find an easier way of doing things, especially if it doesn't require more coin to achieve it. This just requires extra wire most of us have on hand. I like to separate my coils to make jump rings. This will make that job immensely easier and more consistent spacing then stretching out the coil does. Thanks again for the wonderful tip! 💕👍

@@tyedye571 I wish I could claim the genius for myself but, alas, it was SlavTV and ReEngineering who were there first. I just had the idea to put them together in one video. Thanks Wendy!

Hi Nancy and all you Nancy-fans Good video on coils but seeing the title, I had expected soomething slightly different. Maybe, you can do that another day: Springs. Tiny springs as used in clasps and that kind of stuff. Piano wire etc.
@NancyHamiltonJewelry
@NancyHamiltonJewelry 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I could do that with piano/music wire. Thank you for your suggestion. I make my springs, for clasp (or whatever), in the same fashion. It just takes a few extra tweaks. Maybe I'll pop out a quick video this coming week - as an addendum. Thank you.

I have a video coming to my (as of yet unopened) Shopify store. That uses the open coil, which I discuss in detail. I offered some ideas on how the coil can be used to Lady Metalsmith (above). Perhaps that will help? That's a great suggestion too! Maybe I'll change my thumbnail image to include some ideas. Thank you.

What is that winder thingy? Is that home made? I like that as opposed to a drill because I am kind of dangerous with those.

For the spring wire itself, are you using soft, half hard, or hard wire?
@NancyHamiltonJewelry
@NancyHamiltonJewelry 4 жыл бұрын
It depends on the gauge and use. If I was making a spring for a clasp I'd use steel music wire - hard as heck! If I'm using a heavy gauge wire like brass or bronze, I'd probably anneal it. It the video, I used the wire off the coil which I ordered dead soft - although dead soft isn't as soft as when I then anneal it too. Fine silver, probably no annealing. I always buy my wire dead soft, whenever possible. I can always work-harden it, by twisting or pulling, if I need it hardened. If I make a coil of, let's say, 12 gauge copper, I'd probably anneal it before opening the coil with the "Thingy" tool. That's just to reduce the amount of work that I have to do! Thanks for the question and for watching!

These are cool - but why would you need coils like these for making jewelry? Especially if making chain?

I’ve never used coil in my work. Can you give me some examples of how it would be used?

I'm making a figure 8 chain that requires an open coil. I can't post images here so, it is difficult to explain. But, essentially, each link is made from 2 uncut jump rings. Each loop is pried up from the coil. I know, that's confusing! I'm working on a video about making this so, more information will be available soon! A lobster claw, tube clasp or circular clasp has a spring in it - if you have ever made those. You can coil the wire and bend it into a bracelet or earring shapes. Kind of like these coil springs (they aren't jewelry but, could be!) m.cnchspring.com/metal-springs/compression-spring/beryllium-copper-coil-spring.html. You can coil the wire and then flatten it for bracelets and other applications, you can make a Tesla Coil! Ha! This Cardinal bracelet uses open coiled wire: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mrZyrLKau5O9dKM.html. There's a few other chains that are interlocked and woven but, I'm having a hard time finding them at the moment. Hope this helps! Thanks!

Nancy Hamilton omg the video on the cardinal bracelet did my head in🤪. Amazing and a bit too much for my feeble brain 🧠 😂 fabulous though. Kudos to you if you have made one. Love 💓 you videos, I’ve learned so much from you over all these years. Thank you so much , I know how much time goes into making videos. Wishing you a Merry Christmas 🎄 and all the very best for 2020.

Or you could just hold each end and stretch it like I have been doing for 10 years
@NancyHamiltonJewelry
@NancyHamiltonJewelry 4 жыл бұрын
But, for me, I can't pull the ends apart so I need to spread them apart with a screwdriver. I started with the pulling and spent a lot of time opening the ends so, I began my research. You might try the "Thingy tool" making the coils already open is pretty danged quick. Thanks for your feedback! Happy stretching!

@Reid Smith Yes so long as you take it easy, to be honest the first I saw the winding method was in this video
@NancyHamiltonJewelry
@NancyHamiltonJewelry 4 жыл бұрын
@Reid Smith Yes, with the "Thingy Tool" and the "L Thing" (Hah! Who knows what to call them?) offer consistent results. With the "Thingy Tool", the consistency depends on how well I make my coil. The "L Thing" probably yields the most consistent results as long as the coil is made tightly. But, the differences are negligible.
