Gotta love the safety. No grinder shield, taped up electric cord, open sandals... Then there is the welding... No chipping the slag off and welding over the top of it. Uhhhg.

A couple of tips if I may. First off, I have been a sorta hobby, sorta paid welder for around 20 years. I enjoynit, learned all I could, took classes, but realized the day I make it my job, I will hate it and didn't want that to happen so I do it for fun more than for pay. With all that being said, I recomend welding thin gauge tube like that with either mig, tig, or gas (oxy/fuel) depending on application and how pretty it needs to be. Essentially you just placed a bunch of tacks and then ground it down, now if it is simply a decorative piece, that will suffice, just don't let anyone put it under strain or it will likely tear or break. The stick welder, even on some of its lowest settings, agitates the puddle to get through to bare steel way to much causing blow outs, like I am sure you have seen, even on its lowest setting. Stick is great for dirty, thick steel, but sucks at anything thinner than about 10 gauge. Good luck and be safe. P.S. might want to throw on a little more ppe, spatter and uv burns hurt like hell and dramatically increases your chance of developing skin cancer.

If I were him I would have put a backing plate on the inside of the tube before bending it toward the 90, maybe a small piece of the 1/8” tube he cut off, then you can lay a weld and that backing strip will help you weld it with out a root opening. Although if he was using wire it would be a lot easier.

@@Gouneo You can find the really cheap Flux core might welders most anywhere and they are usually cheaper than even the cheapest of stick welders. Oxy/fuel is even cheaper, you can get a small Mapp gas/Oxy torch setup for less than $60 US.

Awesome safety video!! Notes: 1. Taped together cord on the angle grinder. 2. Sparks right onto taped cord. 3. Wearing sandals, fine, 4. But then standing right beneath the cutting area! 5. No guard on the angle grinder. 6. No handle either. 7. Partial cut through steel tubing with a hand-held abrasive wheel. (notice the wheel deflecting) 8. Wearing RUBBER gloves while welding!! What's the worst that could happen? Gloves melt onto hands, Wheel explodes, flies into the users face, steps on melted wire electrocuting himself.

@@runningbear1982 Kinda counter intuitive... Unsafe Usage of Power tools is one of the fastest ways to lose your balls or other appendages, plus you assume women don't use duct tape. Me, I just use regular PVA glue for my woodwork, duct tape isn't gonna cut it because I gotta sell some of the stuff I make. Metal? Well, I can weld faster than I can find the blasted roll of duct tape... Must be here somewhere... And my welds are pretty good, almost as good as duct tape. So yeah, to each their own. Balls or whatever.

Hey appreciate ALL the videos, Thank you! One quick question on a project I am working on. We have a steel, metal screen door, 8 feet tall and 50" wide, weighs about 150 lbs., 1 3/8" square tubing frame around it. I am looking to mount on our backyard entry with a 2" square tube, 1/4" thick wall, and 13 feet long. So I can burry 5 feet of tube in cement and 8 feet to weld the door on. Will it work, or is 5 feet in the ground over doing it? Thank you !

@American Flyer ahh of course. Right, good idea, same level of protection as for your hands and just as easy to slip on. Might be cool to have little squares of scrap leather with velcro to wrap around your feet/ankles so that any runners or slippers will work, and fits in the back pocket with the gloves. "Grieves" I want to say? Just musing. Seems like kind of a dumb thing to think about until you catch a bead or two on shoes you care about.

No it's not normal or by any means safe. And the tack procedure he used was wrong. The only way to get a good bead using that method is the machine MUST be set at an amperage that is hot enough to burn the slag COMPLETELY out of the way and definitely wrap all corners when welding such joints. That will miserably fail in a structural environment.
