A bit of advice for those viewing this: this video is the first I saw and used to make my first coldbrew batch. The coarser you grind your coffee, the better. The finer the grind, the thinner the coffee. You want coarse (large) grinds, so the water absorbs more of the coffee as possible. I have an electric burr grinder, and I set it to the coarsest possible setting (opposite of finest), and the coldbrew comes out great! Also, you want to make sure you use filtered or bottled water. If your tap water has noticeable chlorine in it, it's going to come out in your coldbrew and ruin it. Also, 24 hours steeping time is best, especially if you let it steep in the fridge IF you don't squeeze the bag like he did. Squeezing the bag is kind of a bad thing.
@jlopez47
@jlopez47 5 жыл бұрын
Another thing, depending on the type of coffee beans you use; if you use a lighter roast bean, you'll see some of the oils solidify after 2 or 3 days and rise to the top. It looks like tiny little white worms that float to the top after a few days in the fridge. You want another filtering step besides the cloth he recommends here. I use Toddy filters, which are thick white wooly disks that filter out a lot of the oils and fats that solidify later. Thanks to the Protein Chef for this video, though. I've been enjoying my own coldbrew ever since!

If you have a foodsaver vacuum sealer, and a mason jar attachment and hose, you can significantly cut your brewing time to 1-2 hours by brewing in the mason jars and vacuum sealing them. The vacuum helps extract the coffee faster without sacrificing flavor. You can always strain it after.

I now use the cookie jar that is used in the video - I don't use any nut bag or any other filter - the grounds go right into the water. When done, I have a jar that fits into the cookie jar and I "scoop" out the coffee - I have 4 800ml glass bottles into which I pour the coffee. I use a funnel with a tea strainer on top. It takes two "scoops" per 800 ml bottle. Then, for the last bottle, I don't use the jar scoop - I just pour right from the cookie jar into the tea strainer sitting atop the funnel sitting atop the 800 ml bottle. For me this works wonderfully well. Quick and easy - and no spillage at all. The 800 ml bottles are the glass bottles in which Voss sells drinking water - they are perfect right cylinders so the take up little real-estate in the refrigerator. I now dilute the coffee 1/3 water, 2/3 coffee. The brewing is done at room temperature. I have two sets of four bottles so I can have as many as 8 bottles in the fridge at one time. When I open the fourth bottle then I make another batch...brew 24 hours, bottle and put in fridge. Rotate stock. Oh, I also stir the brewing coffee every so often, as the grounds will settle. Don't know if that makes any difference at all. Honestly, I don't know if this is a good method or not - except that it works wonderfully well for me. I tried other methods of coffee brewing, like french press, and other methods of cold brewing - but this "crude but effective" method is perfect for me. If my description is not clear I can post some photos - and please feel free to ask questions if you have any...Oh, and I also drink the coffee cold right from the refrigerator - no more heating the coffee at all.

I would add a shot of Irish whiskey and a dollop of whipped cream on top. That's how I prefer my chilled coffee.

+Michaelsp9 most cold brews take 24-48 hours depending on the method and if you use *fresh medium ground coffee*. So relatively, 16 hrs. is quick lol

+ibkristykat most people don't recormend squeezing the filter bag as your taking it out. so maybe that's where hes getting extra strength/ bitterness/acidity from. Where as if you don't strain it you would leave it for 24+ hours.

Quick because you could just wake up and scoop up coffee if it's already made. Do it a few hours before you sleep on your day off and then wake up to coffee that you got for the next week.

bud, I would encourage you to try roasting your own coffee, it is not that expensive (try going to sweet Marias website) I bought my hot air roaster for around a hundred and fifty usd, and the quality of fresh roast far surpasses anything bought at a local grocery I've found here. if you think hole bean makes a difference, wait till you try fresh roasted.

Good recipe as far as the ratio, measurements and equipment. Brewing on a countertop away from the sunlight or in a cupboard is my preferred method. But no matter which cold brew recipe I have followed over the years, I have discovered my own little tip early on. No matter what, to get the best and smoothest flavor, you have to double strain. After removing the nut milk bag, use a mesh strainer and line it with a paper coffee filter into your serving pitcher. It takes an annoying amount of time BUT your patience will be rewarded lol. The best tasting cold brew coffee ever. I never use sweetener or milk in mine because this tip makes delicious on its own. Cheers
