Today, people regularly feel like they don’t have enough - not enough time, not enough money, not enough followers on Instagram. Can these every day experiences of scarcity actually have positive consequences? Drawing from her 15 years of experience as a behavioral scientist and her 24 days as a contestant on the television show, Survivor, Dr. Kelly Goldsmith makes a surprising case for how a little scarcity can benefit us, both individually and collectively. Dr. Kelly Goldsmith is a behavioral scientist who examines people’s responses to uncertainty and scarcity, uncovering and explaining seemingly paradoxical effects. She received her doctorate from Yale University in 2009. She then joined the marketing faculty at the Kellogg School of Management where she was consistently one of the highest rated professors, receiving multiple honors and awards for both her research and teaching. In 2014, she was named as one of the "Top 40 Most Outstanding B-School Professors in the World Under 40" (Poets & Quants) and one of "Eight Young B-School Professors on the Rise" (Fortune). In 2017, she joined the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt as an Associate Professor of Marketing with tenure. She regularly publishes in top marketing and psychology journals. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Kelly thanks for this lecture because we as humans seem to not ever get enough of anything we always seem to want more, more more. I have learned over the years that we all have an inner drive within us which is forever pushing us to desire more of the things we really don't need we must get control. So I appreciate how you broke each phase or lever of our wants down to us where we can rise up, monitor and focus our thoughts for the better to gain victory. Thanks God bless you, from your sister in Christ from Hammond, LA.

I'm so fortunate to live in this era. I struggle so much with bi-polar (manic depression) And there are times when I can do is cry in bed. Because I know this about myself I create playlist for those dark days. This was so useful and the first on my list today. It made me get up and work on task, but I wanted to come back and thank you for sharing this. ❤

Key takeaway points:- 1) There are two forms of scarcity:- Objective Scarcity Subjective scarcity 2) Subjective scarcity is increasing due to social media platforms' influence. 3) Life's daily frustrations due to subjective scarcity need not be limitations, but assets 4) When you think you don't have enough, the research says, you are actually generous or selfish depending on what's in it for you. 5) Due to subjective scarcity, we make strategic decisions with our own best interest in mind 6) It makes us look for win-win situations, where we win by helping others.

*Compassion for others = compassion for oneself.* Like it or not, humankind is a team now since we are all so interconnected. So, how strong of a team player are you? Do you tread on your team mates when they are down? Make life miserable for that one weird guy, even though you need him to hold the line on his side? Quite literally, our very lives depend on our ability to get along.

In my opinion the antidote to subjective scarcity is gratitude. Some self esteem helps too! I live in poverty and have done for some time but honestly, I rarely feel subjective scarcity. Since I made gratitude a regular practice I don't feel the fear of not being or having enough as much at all.

It is unbelivable I hear this.. - I realy do belive that strategy 'support someone else to support yourself' must become general strategy of upcoming social comunication, which finally would turn-over this hundred-years concept of 'a man is a wolf to another man'((... and could start change our understanding of what is the true Human nature... - Thank You!

@Kelly Goldsmith, In my personal rate of top subjects, important to keep the attention on, - the one, you've presented in Your speech, is #1 (together with the achievements in Cosmology and bio-engineering) - because, I can be wrong, but I perceive it as an important part of the huge complex of what it will be - the factors - which could potentially catalyze the processes of new ethics and new norms of social communication behaviour formatting, which, probably, could be required in terms of new revolutionl technologies development and potential environment modifications... - So, it was very interesting indeed, - I hope, more presentations on the results of Your work will be available in time, - will be very interesting and important to follow-up - With the Regards and Gratitude)🙏

It is not just scarcity, - if I got it correctly - there's one more condition: to establish the win-win relations, the members of such a relations have to depend on each-other...- it is more complicated condition for the artificial modeling... - Stil, the idea and outcomes of the research are VERY interesting 👍🏻👍🏻

@Kelly Goldsmith Oh, well, when it comes to love, it's going to be a long discussion. Not so easily definable. My take is this (I can't prove it, it's uncertain!): Strategy involves the brain, love doesn't.

@Kelly Goldsmith Thanks for your comments. Nice of you to reply. I would just like to express my viewpoint once more, for what it's worth. If love is an awareness that we (humans, nature, everything) are all related, then filling another's scarcity should give us the same joy as filling our own scarcity, without expecting anything in return. Just a thought, from a layman.
@152manoj
@152manoj 5 жыл бұрын
@Kelly Goldsmith Yes, actual scarcity, as you said, is different from 'imaginary' scarcity or to use your term subjective scarcity. The latter, I think, has been culturally ingrained in us to want more and more, as an objective in life. Now I wonder, is it possible to live a life without subjective scarcity? Does it matter?

Hi, Folks. I think this is a good talk and I thank Dr Kelly Goldsmith for presenting it. There are, how-wevver, a couple of points that I would raise. First, a 'different' view of 'not having enough': "We, the unwilling, led by the unknowing, have been doing so much for so long with so little that we are now qualified to do absolutely anything with nothing. The 'Impossible', we do immediately. Miracles take a little longer." The second point. has to with the habit of comparing ourselves to others. This is a fruitless exercise 'cos there will always be others who do or have less or more than we do or have. All anyone has any right to ask of you is that you do the best that you can with what you have at any given time - and this ought to be all that we ask of ourselves too. The third point is regarding perceptions of ourselves by ourselves and others. A LONNNNGGGGG time ago, I came across the saying, "What others may say or think about you 'ackshully' says more about them than it does about you." The real glory in life is not in being better than those around you but in being better than your former self. Think about that for a while. Thanks again, Dr Kelly Goldsmith, for this talk. Just my 0.02. You all have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

how does remembering to be strategic when faced with scarcity helps when being in such a situation automatically gears you to be strategic. also, the quote about stephen covey doesnt seem to be fitting here: he thinks we should have a win-win mindset. what is true, though, is that scarcity forces us to try to improve; however, this can easily lead to unhealthy obsessions in the case of subjective scarcity.

Why do people that are the "poorest" most willing to give the most? An example might be Mother Teresa. What is it about that thinking?

Interesting points and good inital statements, but she lost her objectivity along the way. Her speech would be more unbiased if she based her arguments on the reality of people living in impoverished countries. There are billions of persons who live every day with the life or death dilema of "how to make the most out of not having enough"; because they have enough of nothing! By the way, she should probably keep the show "survivor" out of her speech, because it is what it is, a freaking publicity stunt and a lame "tv show"👎

@Kelly Goldsmith Thanks for taking your time to respond!. It definitely is a complex topic and quite possibly not what many people would like to hear or to be told. And yes, we should more often be reminded on how grateful we should be and of how much we complain about mostly everything....(!?) An especially relevant topic for the younger generations, as I have been able to observe. Sometimes, a crash course on scarcity helps to put us into perspective; a well deserved "reality check", so to say. I live in a developing country and experiencing shortages of many things is a constant finding. I leave you with a quote from Socrates: "The secret of happiness, you see, is not found in seeking more, but in developing the capacity to enjoy less". Best regards!☺

To quote The Infinite Source, "Oh look it's Goldilocks all grown up now." She, Lex, and Brandon annoyed me in every way imaginable during 'Survivor: Africa'.
