This has to be one of my favorite things to look at. I love how Walnut has so much character.
This puzzle is actually very simple to make.
Starting off I took some stock that had a number of ugly checks and cracks down the length. After processing the wood I marked my first piece to get an estimate for how long each piece would be.
This puzzle has 6 identical pieces each with 2 notches cut out.
When laying out where the cuts will be set your bevel gauge to 55 degrees and mark two V's. It is very important that there is a little bit of space between each V or the pieces will be very hard if not impossible to fit together.
And Yes, a 55 degree V turned at 45 degrees cut at 45 degrees creates a 45 degree V Go-figure :)
Once each piece has been marked it's time to get cutting.
Every piece is cut on its edge at a 45-degree angle.
I accomplished this by running some scrap wood through the table saw making a 45-degree notch or channel in the wood.
I then make the 2 cuts on along the layout line then flip the piece over so that the markings are down and test the cuts until we meet up with the previous cuts. This part is a little bit of trial and error but could be avoided if your bandsaw has a miter groove on the opposite side or if you made a sled.
After a bunch of sanding, I applied some tongue oil.
I found a great video by Steve French on how he made his. Check it out for clear directions: • Making the 6-pc notche...

Thanks, it’s a big time saver and really allows you to make those cuts without worrying about something flying back at you because it piled up into the fence.

I made a couple of stars, guided by your video. Thanks! But my stars are a bit "loose" fitting. What can I do to tighten them up a bit without making it too difficult to put together?
@heyimamaker
@heyimamaker 7 ай бұрын
You might need to adjust the angle cuts a little bit. I made a few using some scrap pine before I went for it with walnut. And the stars I made years ago do expand and contract with the humidity so during the winter mine are a lot looser than in the summer.

It looks as simple as you saw the mitre cuts on the band saw. Do you know the Soma cube? It's easier to build, but has a lot of possible solutions. Have fun puzzling :)

@@heyimamaker And if you have built the Soma cube... there are several possibilities to balance it freely on the middle point. I have read that there should be 3 of these solutions. I could find 9 and documented them as videos :)

how long and how wide were the strips of wood before you cut pyramids out of them?
@heyimamaker
@heyimamaker 4 жыл бұрын
That’s a good question and I can get you the exact measurements from the one I made. But as long as you can fit your angles on the piece the size can be a bit flexible.
