Welcome to Wood 'n' Stuff w/ Steve French!
Here's an easy puzzle you can make pretty quickly. If you need to churn out a dozen gifts or merchandise for the craft fairs in a hurry, this is your project. Plus, it's a cool looking puzzle that stumps most people.

The principle works on any scale. So make various sizes. You'll find extra small and extra large ones to look especially cool.

Our family has a tradition of getting 3D puzzles for Christmas. We have one of these puzzles, and it's so fun to see how we could create it ourselves. My youngest is one that out of our kids that loves these puzzles the most, and also has started doing some wood working. I can't wait to show him your video!

+Ástþór Sindri Baldursson - Honestly, it's not easy for me to do. That's why I talk less in most of my later videos. I have my good speech days every now and then. But - for the most part - it can be a frustrating chore for me to talk and explain things. But I know that it's important to share with others the fact that I stutter. It's not something that has to hold you back, though it may sometimes change how you get things done.

This is more something I saw researching this artist that I really liked, his name was Scatman John. He had a bad stutter when he was talking, but he said that scat helped him out. Steve is correct though. you do you, life is a big enough struggle without people being hard or afraid how they function

@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff
@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff 9 жыл бұрын
Sherry Blaylock I'm excited to hear that you made one. Way to go! If the puzzle goes together too tightly and cannot come apart it's possible that your notches are either a tad bit too close, a tad too tight or both. Sanding the four longs sides of each piece (just a little at a time) should loosen the puzzle up for you. However, if you can't get it back apart that's not going to be so easy :) Try gripping opposing corners and pulling straight out. Thank you for watching! And thanks for giving it a try.

Hehe, thanks. That was actually the continuation of a gag I had at the start of the video. But, after reviewing, I feared it may have bordered bad taste and removed it. (Plus, I was trying to edit the video as compactly as I could. When my videos are too long no one bothers to watch them.) You can hear a brief audio artifact, which I added for my own entertainment, at the very end of this video.

Love this project and I am attempting to make the sled jig for the band saw. 2 questions. 1) is the bracket that holds the wood on corner a 45° to the blade? 2) Did you make two of them one in each direction or did you just turn them around?
@ChristopherDemetrick
@ChristopherDemetrick 10 жыл бұрын
OK I figured it out. But the puzzle was too loose. Loosely stayed together. I think the notches were too big or the space between they was too much. What do you thing?
@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff
@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff 10 жыл бұрын
You said you figured out the sled but, for the benefit of others, I'll clarify. Yes, it holds the stock at 45 degrees to the blade (as well as holding the stock on corner, 45 degrees from the table). There are two separate "overlays" for my sled. One angled left and one angled right.
@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff
@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff 10 жыл бұрын
Christopher Demetrick I appreciate your watching and your interest in this project. One of these days I'll draw up a pattern so that people can make these a lot easier without the trial and error factor. To answer your question, if the pieces fit into the notches without much play, I'd try decreasing the size of the gap between the notches. It was kind of difficult for me to express an exact size for that gap. It should be larger than zero (because every time I've tried making this style corner-notched puzzle without a slight gap the pieces never go together, except with great force, which makes them extremely difficult to get back part). I'm not sure what said in the video but I'd shoot for about 1/16" gap (possibly slightly less). That's been working for me pretty well, especially with 3/4" stock. As you're learning, there really is a fine balance between too loose and too tight. And that goes for pretty much all wooden puzzles of this nature, corner or face notched. Best of luck to you.

If your first attempt is too tight or loose just adjust slightly where you cut with respect to your layout lines. After one or two you'll have a good grasp on it.

Awesome job, love puzzles and it's cool to see how they get made. However, I am curious as to why they are built using 70 degree cuts instead of 90 degrees like you mentioned earlier? Does the puzzle not work if you use a 90 degree cut?
@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff
@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff 7 жыл бұрын
It's a matter of perspective. The inside faces of the notches meet at 90°. That is, the interior of the notches ARE a 90° angle. But not in relationship to the faces of the wood. The 70° and 55° measurements are the angles the notch cuts form when viewed from the faces. So there are laid out at 55°, even though they are cut at 90° with respect to each other. Thanks for watching!

Are you sure that angle is set at 55 degrees? I tried making the template at 55 deg and the pieces didn't fit. I could've made something wrong but just wanna double check. Maybe you meant 35 degrees?
@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff
@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Dani El . Yes, the measurements given are correct. When drawn on a flat side, the angles are 55 degrees with respect to the bottom edge. That leaves a 70 degree angle where you'll cut it out (as seen at 2:17), for a total of 180 degrees. When the notches are cut out, the wood is stood on corner, leaving a 90 degree opening (with respect to the corner). Your stock should fit into that cutout perfectly. If your pieces do indeed fit into the openings but the puzzle still will not assemble, you may be forgetting to leave a small gap (1/16" or so) between the two notches. One of these days I'll draw up a template to help you guys out. Until then, I hope my explanation makes sense. If you have any more problems please let me know and I'll help you out the best I can.
@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff
@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff 9 жыл бұрын
Shots Games, And Tutorials No, not 90. The cuts create a 90 notch, with respect to the corner. But you do not mark 90 on the wood. If you do it'll be way off.

It is arctan(sqrt(2)) = 54.7356103 degree
@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff
@SteveFrenchWoodNStuff 8 жыл бұрын
saka1029 - Exactly. The 55° is a close as you can expect - or need - to be in woodworking. I've made hundreds of pieces for those puzzles (and variations on the theme). 55° is definitely the proper angle to cut. If one were to cut the pieces at this angle and find that their puzzle fits together way too tightly, add a tiny (1/16") gap at the point where the two notches come together. But keep the same cut angle.

When the notches are laid out, it's a 55 degree angle that you would draw on the face of the wood. It only becomes a 45 after it's cut and measured with reference to the corner.
