Recently a friend ordered a ring of two contrasting wood species (Bubinga and Birch) with a Green Jade inlay. In this video i'll show you how I make this type of ring from start to finish. This time the real challenge has been to work the stone, in order to give the whole product a finer finish. In other jewelry projects I used stone inlay but I joined to the ring without working it at all. The hardest thing was to find the system sculpting a so so small piece mineral. I hope you enjoy this project and my work.

What a beautiful video. I was looking for a decent video showing stones being set into wood for a project I'm working on (earrings) and this is just lovely. Usually hate instructional videos - the music and lack of talking were perfect.

Awesome. I've just expanded my wood design jewelry line by adding rings. I experimented with making a few with a scroll saw and it was interesting. I never thought about the using the sander and I do have one similar to the one used in the video. I just sanded it manually, but will integrate your technique. Love it. Great job. What was used to give it the shine. I sealed mine with shellac.

@WoodworkingBarcelona
@WoodworkingBarcelona 9 жыл бұрын
SL33P3R16 It depends on the desired thickness of the ring. The minimum number of layers also depends on the thickness of the shavings. It's all about testing. Anyway, I guess 3 layers it will do the thing. I hope this helps you. Regards!

+jordan bull Thanks Jordan to come and comment. I'm glad my videos have encouraged you to start working with wood. As you can see, you don't need fancy tools to start. I recommend you to buy a small rotatory tool like dremel or so, a small block hand plane (mine is so cheap and works well), different grits of sandpaper, small files and lots of patience. You'll also need some wood of course. The glue I use on all my wood jewelry is CA glue (cyanoacrylate glue). I hope it helps, regards!

I have recently tried to make my own ring like this video shows. I havent made it very far. I am having a hard time working with the shavings and CA glue. First of all, how are you not killing your skin by touching it with your fingers? My thumb is like a rock right now. second. How long are the shavings to your two types of wood?
@WoodworkingBarcelona
@WoodworkingBarcelona 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel! I'm glad my videos have encouraged you to try it by yourself. In fact it is a difficult tecnique and requeires many tries before you get a good result. working on tiny wood shavings with CA glue can be frustrating so I recommend to glue a little by a little and use the masking tape tecnique I'm showing on this video. Couldn't tell how long are they. It would depend on the thickness of the shaving. Couldn't tell if it is better a thick shaving or a thin one. It will depend on the wood type and it's elasticity properties. I encourage you keep trying. Best regards!

how strong are these rings? I can imagine stronger then some of the other rings out there because this respects the wood grain but how much stronger is it?
@WoodworkingBarcelona
@WoodworkingBarcelona 8 жыл бұрын
+marty izzard Bentwood rings are much flexible and resilient than a solid wood ring. I can't tell exact numbers but I could tell they resist at least 5 times pressure. Anyway there's a lot of variables that can change that statement (number of layers, specie of wood, type of bond, measurements...). Regards.

This is really a very beatiful Ring and I guess it is a very comfortable and warm feeling to wear it. Is the glue and the laquer (finnish... don´t know the right word in english) the same? What is it made of (or what brand) it looks so glossy. I thought i may could use it for my jewellery i make from Paper (since Paper was also wood in the beginning). I also use anttique paper and shellac, this is a finish they used in old times. It is a Resin that litle animals left on plants. I have to mix it with pure alcohol but it is very yellow in color, sometime something clear like yours woud be better. I never thought that one can make such a small piece with such big machines!... you are an artist :-). Thank you for sharing your beatiful work (do you have an Etsy shop?). Greetings from Switzerland, Sabine.

Ms7art Thanks for you nice comment. I feel rewarded to see how people values my work. Usually, for all my rings I use "CA glue" (a.k.a. superglue, instant glue) for it's clear, durable and shinny result. I guess you'll able to use it on paper withou problems. I know about Shellac but I haven't tried yet. Regards form Barcelona!
@Ms7art
@Ms7art 9 жыл бұрын
superglue... wow, I will try that. I think Shellac is more for furniture than your rings because it dissolves in alcohol, if people spill theire Wodka it would ruin the rings i guess :-). Shellac is not very durable, I just use it because i am interessted in all ancient traditions and tecniques and I like the resin smell. You can be proude of your work, I also watched the other videos and love the cake-plate... did not know that swiss-roll cake is known in barcelona :). All the best, Sabine.

Amazing video! What tool did you use to hold the gem when shaping it? :O
@ret7army
@ret7army Жыл бұрын
it's sometimes (often) called a "dop" stick, basically, on others I've seen, it's a type of wax that'll hold the stone firmly when cold, other jewelers will heat it up a touch when putting the stone on it. Pulitzer Opal on his channel gets into that a number of times of what he's doing. He only works with the gem stone however not a finished jewel.

I'll want to get the same look as you did with the copper/blackwood ring only with silver and with two different woods on each side of the metal spacer (oak and birch). instead of the wire inlay, as said want to take of some thickness on each end and leave a spacer in the middle and the glue the shavings on. together with the combined knowledge from your great tutorials should be doable :) do you think staining the wood would be possible (want to get it black as well, the woodtype is important symbolic to me , but I don't like light colored wood rings). anyways, as said great videos , keep it up

guess I'll answered myself, probably will have to stain it before glueing so the pores of the wood stay open and don't get shut by the glue :)

Of course you can stain the wood (before apply finish and clear coat of CA). I understand to symbolic of particular species but instead staining I would recommend to find darker species like ebony, rosewood, walnut or wenge. Thank for your comment and support. Be free to make any other questions. Regards!

Hi, i want try to make this lovely wood ring. It's my first time, do you think is possible for me make this one? If is hard for me find wood like Bubinga and Birch, can i replace this with another wood more easy to find in my country but good for the ring project? I'm italian. Another question: which type of glue you use at 0:48. And at 4:13 is the same glue? Thank you!

+aNakin12 Hi! Yes indeed, you can use other species of wood. The most important thing is to obtain a good quality shavings. The only glue used in this project is CA glue (crazy glue, superglue, cianoacrylate glue). Good luck. I hope you can share your results on my facebook page. Regards!

+Woodworking Barcelona Hi :) I'm still working on my ring project, and it is fine for now. I've a question: How to polish the ring?
@WoodworkingBarcelona
@WoodworkingBarcelona 8 жыл бұрын
You can do it by the cheap way using nail polishing pads or the expensive way with micromesh sanding pads. Regards!

Wonderful! Thank you for making this video! Out of curiosity, could you give the name of the glue you used to secure the stone to wood? :-)
