How to make wooden rings otherwise known as bentwood rings without fancy tools! All you need is some veneer, a knife, CA glue (super glue/krazy glue) and some sandpaper. These rings get their strength from the layers of veneer and glue. Because they are layered they are much stronger than a ring turned on a lathe with a hold drilled out. Anybody can make these rings as they are super easy and quick to produce. My wife and I wear these as our wedding rings. Since they are made of wood they will need some care and refinishing once in a while. In this example I'm using sapele and maple as I like the contrast of the two woods.
If you're using a drill bit as your template you'll need to find the equivalent bit size in MM. Ring sizes in MM can be found here:

I made some of these rings but using a shaving from a handplane. I made a video here on the tube also. I will send some pics to share if you like. Later, Brett

My findings on this project: 1. aside from getting straight grain veneer you want FINE grain veneer, basically as fine as possible, because else the preparing process will be harder. The finer the grain is on the veneer, the easier it is to get the strips into shape without risking possible chips breaking off or the veneer splitting. 2. give your strips a bath in any temperature water overnight and finish it up by bringing the water up to the boil for an our or two. The extra soak the veneer gets sure does help plying your strips into shape 3. Make sure you know your ring size and get a dowel slightly smaller (if you use EU ring sizes I'd stick to getting 1 size smaller. i.e. from 22 -> 21 ring size). For some reason my ring turned out bigger than I expected on the ring size 22 that I scaled my middle finger to be. It fits more snugly around my thumb than it does around my middle finger. 4. be very weary with how thick you make the ring. I find 3 - 4 revolts is more than sufficient to make a decent thickness ring. Any more and the ring will probably be too fat for most people's liking. 5. Get consistend pressure when making your ring. Else the sides will have dark spots in them (which is basically the dried up glue concentrated in 1 spot). This will be hard to perfect at first, but make some more and you'll get the hang of it Aside from everything mentioned above. This project is great and it's fun to do. You could even go as far as to make your own One ring by engraving the inscription in the ring. To do that I'd say you get yourself a engraving pen for a couple quid and engrave away! ebay.com/bhp/electric-engraving-pen

I wonder if it would work well to wrap the veneer around in a spiral fashion so you would essentially have a scarf join and the grain would be at an angle in the final ring.

So many semantics with some people. ;) This is a super neat project. I'm going to make a few blanks to practice, but I plan I'm making a couple with gem inlays; I hope they come out well! I'm also glad you linked the veneer on Amazon. The reviews kinda put me off, but I'm sure that if you're using them then they aren't all bad.

With out proper tools like a lathe. It doesn't come out like what you see. Lots of veneer breaks because of thecway the grain goes. If you don't have it as tight as possible, it won't come out right. I have been trying for months to get a really good ring without tools. Also, ginding just takes the veneer off. Hope you have a fan. Good luck.

What did you use for a finish on this. You sprayed something on it at the end? If making this for someone who has sensitive skin do you recommend any less toxic finishes/glue? Also, how may layers of veneer could one use? I like the idea of 3- maple, cherry, then maple but not sure if that would make it too thick?

+mrN3w7 I think he meant no power tools required, because you can do this without the lathe and drill he used. Still a little misleading, but I at least expected sandpaper and glue.
