After experimenting over the last few years with the Mono Rig, I tried something similar, but different with the Euro Leader Set Up. Having fished it now in many previous videos over the last dozen or so trips, I wanted to share with you how to make it. In this video I discuss things like:
1.) Gear you Need
2.) Why it's Effective
3.) Materials Needed
4.) Leader Formula
I hope you learn something new and take it out and catch a few more fish next time! Links in the description below for materials I typically use for both Euro and Mono Rig.

Unfortunately we’re only allowed 18’ leaders here in PA , great tips for leader builds and construction. I use the chameleon material also , 20,15,10 lb - 4’ sections , then tippet ring , sighter and then to an additional tippet ring , then my tippet section, usually fishing 5x fluro , sometimes can get away with 4x depending on conditions. Again great video Mike 🤙🏼.

@@Tkid521 The following is a note that I got from the PFBC on September 10, 2020 Nick, I was asked to reach out and explain the process for changing the leader length regulation. We were approached by several groups that were taking place in non-traditional fly fishing techniques, specifically Tenkara and European Nymphing. We started an internal discussion with staff and had no real issues offering a proposal to remove the limitation. A proposal was drafted for the Commissioners to consider, if they approved the proposal it would go out for public comment. They did approve and we published in the PA Bulletin and requested comments. We received no comments against the removal and several that were in favor. Two meetings later the Commissioners took a final vote to amend the regulation removing the leader length requirement. During the internal discussion we looked at the history of the regulation. We couldn’t find any reasoning for the limitation short of excluding all types of fly fishing that differed from what we consider traditional. As the PFBC is about providing more opportunities it was decided that the change would allow for additional fly opportunities. Hope this helps, need anything else let me know. Thanks. COL Corey L. The 2021 PA Regulations on page 21 now has no leader length restriction. see - www.fishinpa.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/FINAL-2021-PA-Fishing-Summary_1-7-21_Web.pdf - Middle column Catch and Release Fly Fishing only mentions monofilament without a restriction.

I agree with you that there are many different set ups that can be used. I like your 3 part formula. I just got a 10'10" 2 wt rod w/euro fly line. Definitely the longer rod helps. Hey Frank! I just recorded another video on a more delicate version of what I have been using lately. The video here still works just fine for me. However, I find myself downsizing a good bit for nymphing only. The rod makes a difference for sure, but the leader I think is even more critical. Thanks for watching and the support. Nice presentation! Good leader system, but if you ask 10 guys you’ll probably get 10 different formulas on their preference of leader setup ! It all comes down to keeping your tippet thin so your not getting drag like you said ! Personally I keep my leader system on the long side , and occasionally will throw on a airlock indicator in runs that have a lot of structure , and do quite well switching when I need too ! Again great video and let’s see you out there getting into some ! Tight lines

I agree with you. I also believe I should start increasing my length. I think 30-50 would be a good amount. 20-24 works for sure. But s little longer can’t hurt. Especially for when throwing jig streamers or a dry dropper and want to cast a little further. No wrong way to do it really. Just variations guys prefer situationally. This is a road map for a beginner I think.

Great information, enjoyed the breakdown of the euro nymphing rig and its application and set up! Very insightful and useful. I just use the 8ft and 9ft fly rod. I realize these are not a good fit for this type of fishing, but have to stay in my budget for now before I branch out! I started to get back to fly fishing 2 years ago something to help my time with when I retire. I love the bass fishing, but also the challenge of fly fishing for trout. I enjoyed the sport in my early years living in PA. Thought it would be great exercise and an opportunity to enhance my fishing experience! Thanks for the video!

@@tightliningmd it was a good option for me because I wanted a dedicated nymphing rod but was on a tight budget last year. Their customer service has been good to me so far too. I was dumb and took my reel apart while wading to get a birds nest out, and dropped the spool retainer in the creek. Echo mailed me a new one at no charge. They also sell tip sections for the Carbon XL euro rod, I’m sure I’ll end up breaking that on a tree branch at some point 😆 Ive heard great things about the Syndicate rods, they were just out of my budget at the time.

Decided I would go as thin as I could stand this spring and fish it exclusively, spent the bulk of it with 6lb amnesia to 4x sighter, now running 4x sempe to 5x sighter. Both of those put 10lb chameleon to shame IMO. I will still monorig w/20 chameleon if I ever want to primarily fish a bushy dry without a dropper, or with a very lightly weighted dropper, but the drifts with the microthin set up are unbelievable. Maybe you’ve tried even thinner than 10lb chameleon, but if not give a 4 or 4.5x 20ft leader a try and you may be pleasantly surprised.

I have fished a micro thin leader, made mostly of sighter material once before. I did really like the sensitivity. I will create one some time and try it out. In PA, the 18 ft. leader rule previously applied to CRFFO streams, that is Catch and Release, Fly Fishing Only, of which there are relatively few stretches. All of the other regs allow both spinning and fly tackle, and a spinning rod has way more than 18 ft. of "leader". Interestingly, this year's complete fishing regs book does not mention the 18 ft. rule at all. It says "

Fantastic. Thank you for this. I have been doing a ton of research this winter on a euro setup and this is very helpful. A question about reels - can I just use an old reel for this setup? I'm looking at the Clearwater package with rod and reel but wondering if I really need a specific reel. "Balling on a teachers budget" haha.
@tightliningmd
@tightliningmd 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. My only caution would be to make sure it is balanced. A good pairing of a reel and rod for a euro set up should be if you put your index finger on near where the cork and rod meet, just about an inch or so below, you should be able to balance rod right there. If it leans one way or the other the reel is too heavy/light. Typically you "size up" a reel when pairing with a rod. So my 3 wt I use a 4/5 wt reel. Something to remember. Otherwise, you will be shoulder fatigue more easily. Clearwater package is solid, even as a whole outfit. Tight lines!

This is a terrific video: extremely clear and helpful. One question, though: Do you use Seaguar Invizx 4lb. for all your tippets? In other words, do you use it even when fishing small nymphs? And, when you fish two nymphs, how far above your point fly do you put your dropper?
@tightliningmd
@tightliningmd 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for watching and commenting. I use 4lb tippet for nymphing and 8 lb for streamers. I could probably go as low as 2 lb as well and it be perfectly fine. I believe 4lb is rated out right around 5x-6x, or right between. Don't quote me, but its close. I put my point fly typically 18-24' above and they are usually 4-6" of main line.

Any particular reason you like using a tippet ring instead of a knot to join the Maxima to the sighter? Smoother or less bulky transition? Diameter differences between the two lines? I don’t have a lot of practice with blood knots so I might try this as a substitution.
@tightliningmd
@tightliningmd 3 жыл бұрын
Break points for the leader. If I get stuck or something it makes it easy to repair. Also, like you said they aren't like blending tippet form lets say 5x to 6x. Because of the bigger diameters of the two pieces, something it is best to separate via tippet ring. Knots can be a pain as well :)
@MarkRambo1
@MarkRambo1 3 жыл бұрын
@@tightliningmd that makes sense to me. I can’t believe I never thought of tippet ring instead of knots within the leader. I always tied one onto the end of my sighter to connect tippet

Also, a little easier to shoot out guides too I feel. There are ways to smooth out knots with apoxy and stuff. But the tippet ring isn’t quite as thick as a blood knot.

As you doubtless know, most comp guys are now using micro-thin leaders, which might be, for example, a complete leader made of 4x sighter material. The rationale for this is that it reduces sag to a minimum. Could you tell me your thoughts on such leaders? Also, what is the most visible 4x sighter material for you these days?
@tightliningmd
@tightliningmd 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Alex, I have actually fished one of those style once before. I liked it, because it does as you say eliminate the sag and is very tough sensitive. You feel everything, even more so then with a mono/euro rig. However, that sag in the line also provides clues when it moves, pauses, or changed speeds during a natural drift. I find both to be useful, but don't think any one is better than the other. I would also mention that it is less versatile. I like throwing dry, dry dropper, and small streamers, that set up you mention is not geared toward that. Maybe one day I do a video on some different leaders and what is good and bad about them. Thanks for watching and commenting. Tight lines!

I just tried a micro leader for the first time, didn’t go well. When you are casting at a distance do you have your fly line in hand or is it that chameleon at all times bc you have it so long?
@tightliningmd
@tightliningmd 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that. It does take getting used to. So the answer varies. I usually either have it pinched with index finger against rod if I am fishing 10-15 ft away. If I am further than that then yes I need off hand on chameleon to pick up slack as I “retrieve”. If casting is prob try water loading it behind you. Let it just sit in riffle or water behind you and use that resistance to help you and the a firm flick of wrist to send it forward. It gets easier. If you have never seen the videos Modern Nymphing by Lance Egan then it’s a must must must. I have watched all 3. Single handed OT best resource I’ve learned from. Keep after it 🤜🏻🎣💯

Awesome video as always! Have you tried running a 0X sighter before? Orvis makes a 0X tactical sighter that I have had great luck with. Only reason I mention this is you may find that 0X shows up better on camera than 3-4x does. It also works nice for when you want to float the sighter in slower pools. Larger diameter seems to float better.
