Always enjoy your content and presentations…… very helpful even for very experienced flyfishers👍👍 My euro-nymphing leaders change from time to time but this is what I’ve come up with which might give others some different options. I use Cortland braided core nymphing line in a double taper. I nail knot an eight inch piece of 10# Maxima Chameleon to that and add a perfection loop. To that I add approximately 25 feet of the same material also with a perfection loop. To this I add a 36 inch sighter (tri-color material and the same diameter as the leader). My tippet ring is 2mm and attached with a clinch knot. My tippet is attached with a 16/20 knot and my flies attached with an improved clinch knot. I find the 16/20 knot stronger than the improved clinch knot, rarely breaking at the knot like with the improved clinch knot. This reduces the chance of losing the entire tippet when you get snagged. If I want to go lighter I use the same formula with 8# or even 6# Maxima. One note of caution with tippet rings….. check your tippet carefully since I’ve had tippet rings that cut the tippet easily. This from single rings from two different brands. If this happens I just go to the next one in the pack. The loop to loop connection will put some people off, purists for sure but I haven’t had any problems. When euro-nymphing I rarely have trout pull much line and even so I feel the line release is overall fine. The main reason for this though is that if I want to switch to dry flies, I remove the euro-leader, wrap it on a Tenkara spool and add a tapered leader. These leaders I tie with lighter butt sections. The DT line allows much better casting than the level lines. For anyone who has never dry fly fished with a euro rod, I’m sure you’ll be quite amazed at the ability to get great mending, distance and drag free floats. Hope this long response gives people some options.

I completely agree! When I first got into Euro nymphing, I tried to digest as much as possible! Then after a season, I went back and rewatched and re-listened to everything...and learned even more. So much information, and I hope my videos help to lessen the learning curve. I have one coming out next week re: Euro nymphing...you'll love it! ;-) Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Tim, very fun to watch your videos. I use almost the same leader as you but I like two tie 2 blood knots one about 10' up from the tippet ring and 1 at 2' and leave the tags about an inch long and at the tippet ring I leave the end of the knot sticking out. It sometimes gets tangled but it sure helps my old eyes see the sighter. Tight lines.

Great video Tim ,over the years I've tried just about everything on the market for tightlining ,what I found that works best for me is straight 20lb amnesia mono,then tipper ring to Clean frost 3lb flour.i find with a 10'3wt rod that works well for me especially tuck casting ,but to each his own!

That setup works great, Chasse, it's a keeper! A micro-thin allows for a bit more sensitivity, which helps especially in pressured water. Hope all is well! Tim www.troutandfeather.com

I took my level 0.022” off of my reel one day because of heavy winds. I went to a 0.008” mono on my reel to help cut through the high winds. Once I did this and got use to fishing it on my reel and discovered the positive sensitivity to the fly among other huge benefits, I haven’t used anything else. Even in cold weather and with lots of time on the water I absolutely love running a thin 0.008” line on my reel, and sometimes I go thinner. From this 0.008” I run it to a 1 mm tippet ring then to my tippet. For sighter I use kafars wax in multiple colors depending on the conditions. I appreciate your videos and content, I always look forward to receiving them. Thanks!!

Your comments are always appreciated, and I love how fine you have made your rig. What are your thoughts on holding mono in your hand while fishing? I really dislike it and prefer the thin fly line...but the fishing is so much better! *For others reading, this shared setup is one that you should not start with, but work towards, especially from a casting standpoint. @@TimCammisa possibly where I’ve fished a thin mono in my hands for so long, I guess I’m use to it. I can still strip quickly if the situation calls. Here in West Virginia, it gets somewhat cold at times but I still run a thin mono on my reel. I don’t know if this technique is for every situation and for everyone but it’s how I prefer to tight line. I fish other methods as well. I Stillwater fish with 6-8 wt systems with 240 gr lines and fish small streams with DT and WF lines for dries and streamers. The thin mono on a tight line nymph rig is just what fits my needs and makes my time on a creek most enjoyable. Thanks a bunch, I enjoy your content and always look forward to receiving your videos!!!! I must say, the type of mono is key. A stiff non stretching mono that doesn’t kink up is necessary. Trilene xt 4 lb is the best I’ve tried. It’s 0.008” and in the years I’ve seen, it is usually first or second in being the least amount of stretch of monos I’ve tested or seen tested. It’s extremely abrasion resistant!!! I highly recommend this mono for a fly reel!!

I'm just starting to get into euro nymphing, but I'm a fan of tying 2 blood knots in the sighter line, 1 and 2 feet above the tippet ring, leaving the colored tags sticking out about 2-3" from the main line. Helps me find the line with my eyeballs really easily.
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa Жыл бұрын
That's a great suggestion, Jeff, as those tag ends are great to pick out! I tend to cut mine shorter when doing so, but this will definitely help others who need to find the line quickly. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Very informative. I have yet to try micro leaders, but I soon will. I've experimented and tied many leaders over the yrs. The one I've settled on for now is just 9 feet of green 10 lb amnesia and 2 feet of sighter. It makes throwing dry flies a bit easier, imo.

If I need an indicator I just put a three inch spray paint spot on a leader about three feet up from the tippet. Mostly fluorescent orange or green. No knots to weaken already lite line.

You're welcome, and thanks for purchasing my book! Versus sighter material built in-line, a favorite method is the Neon Wax. It's adjustable and basically can make any part of my leader or tippet into a sighter. Check this stuff out! bit.ly/48BnTW3 Thanks for checking! Tim

Thanks, Robert, which knot do you recommend? For Euro leaders, I prefer a micro loop in the braid of the fly line, then attaching the leader to that tiny loop. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

@robertvanrensburg2417 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for Reply Tim. I guide in Montana and have fished world and National Champs for South Africa. I have some years of experience. I never use a nail knot on any fly line. For Euro I also do not use the micro loops. I carry two spools. The micro leader and the french. Hanak. Both leaders are needle knotted to the Euro fly line. The leaders pass through the rod guides with ease. Super strong and very smooth. No need for glue etc. I run all my lake and river lines with needle knot ,some have short section of 15 lbs maxima with very small perfection loop. leaders attached to this loop with same small perfection loop on the butt of the leader. Good work with your tying and fishing. Thanks for your efforts Robert
