I just could not spend $9-10 on Mountain House meals anymore for my backpacking trips. So, I decided to figure out a way to mimic a Mountain House meal for less money. Using Knorr Sides, instant potatoes, and Ramen noodles I created my own "Mountain House" meals for about $2. It also reduced the weight of my food!
Knorr Sides, instant potatoes, and Ramen all cost about $1 each at Walmart. To get enough calories, I'd use two of each for my meals. Take them out of their packages and pour them into a Ziploc freezer bag, add boiling water, put in an insulating envelope (see link, below), and wait. They come out delicious and filling for your trail meals.
