How to make your voice sound better in Audacity. Audacity can be the answer to your question about how to make your voice sound good. I make my voice sound better in Audacity using these simple steps. You can make a significant improvement over your audio using Audacity as a beginner.
This way, you can make your audio quality better in podcasts, voice-over, and KZfaq videos. Sound recording can always become better in post-processing. Of course, your recording quality will set the limit of how good it can be, but proper application of audio editing takes it a long way.
If you know how to record and edit using Audacity, you can follow this beginner-level tutorial easily. I have used Audacity 3.0.2 to make this video. This process will also work with Audacity 3.1.2, 3.0.4, 3.0.0 and 2.4.2

I'm a relative newbie with fixing up recordings, but one thing I have learned is that Audacity is "destructive", meaning you apply an effect and it changes the waveforms themselves, rather than applying the effect as an independent layer to the outgoing sound on playback, like more advanced DAWs do (at least as far as I understand it). I learned the hard way to ALWAYS make duplicates of the original tracks before working on them! Then if a series of steps doesn't work right, you can always start over. So thank you for including that step!
@MasterEditor5

Welcome :-). You are right about destructive editing in Audacity. When I use DaVinci resolve for Audio editing, I can turn off any applied effect just with an on/off switch. I hope in the future Audacity will bring this feature. Though Audacity is a very easy and good software for beginners, one has to know a bit to apply proper settings that work for him/her.

Yep Davinci is great, I bought licence with HW controller. What Im loving on Audacity is, that its opensource, so you never lose your skills and you may usi it to improve audio on every editor. I dont like to be catched to one solution... Best is to learn principles and you may use it in every tool.

@@MasterEditor5 Thank you for such a good video! I'm new to podcasting and am learning Audacity. I'm used to video editing, but not detailed with sound. I find that my voice is so inconsistent - loud at some points and soft in others and I'm not sure I'm editing correctly. (I'll be better next time when I record...) But I'm selecting certain parts to make them louder (Amplify) and vice versa for softer, but it's taking too long. I've only learned about Noise Reduction - but will the Equalization and Compression - using the default settings correct the highs and lows and make it more consistent in volume? You started to lose me with the Low Roll off...and Treble Boost...etc. Thanks in advance!
@MasterEditor5
@MasterEditor5 2 жыл бұрын
@@hollierumman8445 The correct effect to fix high and lows are compression. But that is a bit complex effect to apply. So I suggest you use noise reduction and normalize first. I have made a simplified version here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iJNjYNFlp5i2p2w.html After normalize if you see still high and lows, then use a limiter. Which microphone you are using for recording?

This tutorial was fairly good, but in the compressor section, you missed an important detail. The default compression ratio is set to 2:1 and you did not talk about it. This weak ratio is only helpful when compressing a whole finished mix. On individual tracks, where there are obvious problems with loud & soft volumes, a ratio of at least 4:1 is required, sometimes a bit more (5 or 6). Never more than 6.

Thanks for the tips and the video. I can already tell a difference in my audio now that I've used these settings in the sequence you recommended. Two questions: 1) after you use your customized EQ, do you still do a Treble Boost? I'm assuming no; 2) I deal with a fair amount sibilance. Any suggestions on how to remedy that?
@MasterEditor5
@MasterEditor5 2 жыл бұрын
Great to hear! 1. Depends on the voice and recording. Also if the custom EQ has a boost in the treble frequencies, I do not apply treble boost. If the voice is clear and good, it is not necessary to apply treble boost. 2. Try with both a narrow and wider cut alternatively in the region of 5K to 7K or 5K to 9K frequency. In software like DaVinci resolve De-Esser is available. So you can try that if your computer supports that.

Another excellent instructional video. Can you do one whereby a previous audio can be cut and pasted into a new audio, that is sections of it. Is that possible?

Yes, it is possible with multi track and splitting audio. First one will be original track and then new one will be another track. Split and then delete the parts in the first track you want to replace. Keep only the desired parts in the second track with the same splitting technique. Then Mix and render.

@MasterEditor5
@MasterEditor5 3 жыл бұрын
Welcome :-) Unfortunately Audacity do not have a built in deverb plugin. Some paid plugin can be found, but I am not sure how well those works. Maybe you can try adapt some echo free recording techniques. For example you can use software like krisp. It lessens echo a bit. Another technique is to talk bit closer to mic. What kind of microphone you're using? Third technique is to put some blanket in front of back and front walls. Also putting some pillow after microphone also works. In the reverb effect, you will see a Vocal I preset. You can try with tone low 100 and tone high 0. It dampens the sound. May not improve a lot, but you can check if that helps.

Would you recommend applying this process to every audio recording you make moving forward? I've noticed that Audacity saves your preferences and applies them to all recordings moving forward.
@MasterEditor5
@MasterEditor5 2 жыл бұрын
This is a bit generic guideline. You may want to apply all the 4 steps on most of your Audio but preferences may change. For example Your Audio sample can have less noise, so you can set a less noise reduction value. Also you may need to set different compression settings or normalization value depending on your Audio recording. In short these are the steps to improve Audio quality, but the proper settings comes with understanding what is does and of course with experience :-)

There is one final effect that should be done before you upload your audio to KZfaq...It's called Loudness Normalization. This should be set at -14 LUFS. If you right click on the video and go to"stats for nerds" then go to the third column down this will tell you if your loudness levels are too high or low...If they are too high YT will bring down the levels to the above setting but if they are too low they will NOT increase the levels of the audio..So all the volume/Normalization/compressor effects could be null & void should you not use this relatively new effect which has been introduced in Audacity..

@@MasterEditor5 I've been using Audacity for almost 10 years..I use a Rode U.S.B microphone to record my vocals..The big problem I find is getting the audio levels right ..Even within my own uploads I can hear some videos louder than others (while using the exact same settings)...Recordings done in professional recording studios always seem to sound louder on YT . Also I'm sure you're aware that there are many plugins which you can attach to Audacity.. for E.Q..Compressors..Reverbs etc..It's an excellent program.

Is changing the bass and treble of my voice considered cheating? Like am I improving the quality of the recording or am I enhancing my voice?
@MasterEditor5
@MasterEditor5 2 жыл бұрын
It is never cheating. Of course you can change anything as long as your sound quality becomes better. Blindly applying the default bass boost and treble boost of Audacity most probably won't improve your voice. Better approach can be trying out different values and check which settings is actually suitable for that piece of recording.

@MasterEditor5

There is some complexity to consider on using hard limiter. For example, it would not be possible limiter unless your volume level exceeds -10 db. So you can use hard limiter only when some of your volume level cross -10 dB.

If you've got a good intonation, and have neither a thin reedy voice nor a monotonous low one, why do you need EQ at all? I don't think my recording needs that sort of support.
@MasterEditor5
@MasterEditor5 3 жыл бұрын
That's right. EQ can act like a noise reduction with low roll off for speech. Normally voice do not have anything below 80 hz, but certain noise can be in those frequencies. Also treble boost can make sound bit crisper. But if these presets do not enhance sound, EQ can be ignored.
