I can sadly relate to the “spending so much time on japanese that Ive neglected every other aspect of my life” thing. Highly neglected my ASMR youtube channel which was doing semi well before; played guitar for 12 years then just stopped for japanese, always been a big gamer but barely played any games since “it’s not efficient japanese”; and of course the big ol’ “social life” which I basically dont have anymore. All of that, for what, really?

Nowadays in Spotify they have the lyrics built in even for Japanese songs I've found it very helpful.

I remember I used to listen to Finnish music for several hours a day because I liked it. I had no intention of learning it. Since I got it from torrents some of the song titles were translated into English. So I started picking up random Finnish words without trying. I could also hear some words I picked up or recognized in other songs. The most active thing I do is try to spot when the song title has been sung. That helps me pick up words in general without making listening to music feel like studying. It feels more like a game. I find Finnish seems unusually easy for me to memorize and so far it spoken Finnish seems pretty clear sounding.

I agree with your point on music. I dont know why other people bash music as a way of learning. Most songs use quite a bit of vocabulary and its usually common words. If you learn to remember lyrics of songs, it can be an easier way to bring up common vocabulary.

Still feel that it's bullshit that this channel never went viral. At the same time I feel glad that I discovered my own secret stash of gold...

I think the tittle is my biggest issue. I'm training and studying full time at the same time. Trying to balance with work on the side and now Japanese 'full time'. Since you take mma seriously as well, I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this 👍

I really like music for learning japanese, when you like a music, usually you wanna know le lyrics, but there's something about songs that I can't describe, it gets stuck on your mind really easely, for exemple I really like a song called "ラグトレイン" I started by learning the translation with that I got the "imerse" effect and deducted a lot of words with that, then i started to learn the words and all made sense now, and because i liked this song so much I couldnt get it out of my head an ended up knowing all the words in the song (sorry for my english)

About the "getting corrections" part, I don't think you need to get corrections on every little thing you say, however I've found in my case learning English mostly by immersion that some things slip through the cracks, specially grammar stuff. Many people who speak English fluently still say stuff like "I did walked there" instead of "I did walk there". I used to say "it were" instead of "it was", despite getting constant immersion every day for years. Only realized it once I got corrected by a native. And if you want someone to properly take the time to correct you you can always hire a private tutor, which is what I did. Online ones aren't as expensive I believe, and there are even some websites/apps where you can get corrected for free or in exchange for correcting someone. Also speaking to yourself does work, at least to start training your brain to produce. It's mostly how I learned to output since I didn't have English speaking friends. I just thought about a topic and started talking about it (yeah kinda schizo). It allowed me to talk to my tutor with no issues despite it being my first time speaking English to a person.Talking to someone would certainly be more engaging though, and may be more important with Japanese 'cus of all the formalities and stuff. Hi Ozzieman. Do you have any tips for someone like me? My goal with Japanese is mainly to play videogames, I know lol... Just got tired of waiting for fan translations that never really come. And the thing with games is they're mostly just text or have jp subs for cutscenes. My current study schedule has been immersion(2h during weekdays and 4h on daysoff) and going through core10k Anki(at around 4k) but I never really had much interest in any japanese media but games (like anime/vn/movies) and watching all these shows feels cumbersome. I can definitely feel my level growing in listening and reading but when I attempt the thing that interests me the most - games, It's back to square one. I've started another deck that I use mainly for game vocab and I'm surprised that a lot of words that I add, though common in games, don't show up in core10k or any jlpt lists. Mostly fantasy, military, sci-fi vocab etc. but then again core deck has taught me a lot of political, commerce and other types of vocab I don't really need... Would ditching my regular immersion and concentrating purely on mining from games and immersing by playing be beneficial? I'm a bit concerned with developing 'unnatural' reading if i decide to go 100% game route. I'd let to be well rounded and get to general fluency at some point but that is not a priority at all. Games are... lol

I really agree with the part about reading: In English, my L2, I only read when I have a need for it like reading youtube comments or learning more about computer science and so on but in Japanese I don't really have that and I think it's not a hindrance for texting Japanese people because the limiting factor is my typing speed, not my reading speed.
