In this video I show you how to manually program a repeater into your Baofeng handheld radio without the need for a computer/software.
Admittedly, it's much harder to do than on the computer but some people may not get on with programming radios and getting chinese programming cables to work so as an alternative, I've done this video to go in depth on how to set everyhing from frequencies & offset to the tone and shift direction.
Hope the video is of some help out there to someone!

Thanks for watching.

Hello Mike, Your video was full of good info. I'm having trouble with my BF-F8 the president of our club said he would help me but I know he's a very busy man, and I try not to bother anybody but it is very depressing to have a radio and not be able to communicate. BTW My Mom was born in Derbyshire, and she was a war-bride, bless her heart I offered to pay her way home and help set her up in England, but she wouldn't leave because of her children here in the U.S., she has gone home now to live with the Lord, I've always felt very lucky being 1/2 English, and 1/2 American, I wish there was a ham radio that could reach her, Again thanks for all the great info, like my Mom would say, Cheerio, pip-pip, and all that rot, whatever that means, God Bless

It doesn't seem to transmit or receive, but anyway it's a thumbs down for the BF-F8, I have ordered a new base/mobile unit, Hopefully I will have better luck. All I've been provided for our local repeater is RX 173.9500 & TX 167.4500 - Tone: 71.9 - Using CHIRP i've entered this info but It's still not working. Question, must I change channels from TX to RX each time, what I'm doing is transmitting on channel 9 and quickly moving to the Channel with the RX and waiting for confirmation..All I hear is noise, cannot hear anyone speaking...
@OnTheMicwithMike
@OnTheMicwithMike 4 жыл бұрын
In chirp, in 'frequency' add the RX 173.9500 and name the channel if you wish, move on and in 'tone SQL' add 71.9hz tone. Where it says duplex, add a '-' (minus) and the offset key in 6.5mhz. the offset from your numbers indicates a 6.5mhz minus offset. Set your mode and then save onto the radio. That should work fine, you don't need to change channels if you set the duplex correctly. Hope that helps & 73'.

These are very thorough info. It's a vital kit for emergencies. Does it cover NOAA channels? How can you tell a Ham radio from FRS, GMRS, MURS on a device is it just the frequencies or both the hardware? Most sales online are 2 band radio UHF/VHF 2m & 70cm. And some offer over 1000 channels, some for much less, mostly they are 2-way-radio or walkie talkie. But how would you know if it is Ham and not other radios as I mentioned above. Lastly, can an HF band work on a handheld Ham with 2 bands UHF/VHF without a repeater or is it even exclusive on Tech license? or is that require CW band radio with a Gen. license? I'm interested of buying one someday. And a license.
@OnTheMicwithMike
@OnTheMicwithMike 4 жыл бұрын
The Baofeng will cover NOAA transmissions, as for the FRS and GMRS etc I'm not 100% sure as they don't seem to be known about here in the UK. As for HF on a handheld, there aren't any. 2m and 70cm are VHF and UHF respectively and require a license. To be perfectly honest, the Baofeng UV5R is a basic entry level 2m and 70cm ham radio and requires the user to be licensed in order to transmit on. I wouldn't recommend them for non-license usage as there are better license free radios out there. In fact I believe they've not long been banned from being sold in the US.

Hi Mike Might sound a stupid question, but here goes. I’m not bothered about transmitting, but I am looking for a new hobby. I’ve seen the uv5 radios and was really wondering if I got one, what would I be able to hear? I’m a truck driver so get all over the uk so I’m guessing what I hear would change with different areas. Could I hear ham radio transmissions? As you can tell I’m an absolute novice, but watching your videos has got me intrigued. Do I need to be close to a repeater to hear anything. So many questions......
@OnTheMicwithMike
@OnTheMicwithMike 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there, First of all welcome to the hobby! The Baofeng UV5R is a great entry level radio, but it's limited to only two bands really. You would only really be able to hear repeaters on the amateur bands, and also PMR 446, which is a license-free band on 446mhz. Consisting of 16 channels, it's very very short range. Less than line of sight range, but up on high ground you can hear a lot further. If it's just listening you'd like to do, maybe a wideband receiver would serve you better? With those, you could hear the amateur HF bands and CB radio transmissions too. And if the receiver has AM, you can listen in to airport traffic control talking to pilots etc. The Baofeng is a very limited radio and a big mistake is they're bought by many in the hope of listening to lots of things but they are limited and only FM. All the best.

Quick question: I have two (2) Baofeng UV-5Rs. I have them set and programed identically the same in the menu. I also have them on the same frequency. When I transmit from Baofeng radio # 1 to Baofeng radio # 2 it works fine however when I try to transmit from Baofeng radio # 2 to Baofeng radio # 1, the Baofeng radio # 1 will not pick up the transmission from the other Baofeng radio #2. SO I cannot hear any signal/transmission from Baofeng radio # 1. Do you think there is something wrong with Baofeng radio # 1?

How can I enter that frequency when the repeater's frequency is on the way? Will all my transmissions from then on will go through the repeater? Can I disable the repeater if I don't want to use it and then activate it again?
@OnTheMicwithMike
@OnTheMicwithMike 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there, First of all - are you a licenced to use Amateur Radio? reason being, repeaters on the amateur frequencies are only meant for licence holders only. If you are licenced, then you will be legally allowed to use them. From your post, i'm guessing you're not licenced - so therefore, to be honest - a Baofeng is virtually useless for use. The only commonly known frequencies you can use radio license free, are the PMR 446 frequencies and they are simply two-way with no repeaters to work around. Plenty of choice for PMR 446 radios out there and quite cheap on eBay too. The Baofeng can operate on the 446mhz band but are not legal to use. 73'.

Great video had a question on the radio settings and saving because I was getting confused using mine and going back and forth. After you save it in the channel preset #. Everything is saved there fully? But the radio back in frequency mode still has all those settings left as you had them up to the point of saving it. So, could you then take off the off set and tone settings back to normal ie off. and continue to the next repeater for another channel preset save or to continue accessing other frequencies etc without effecting that preset save. Because in frequency mode that is essentially the radios global settings ?
@OnTheMicwithMike
@OnTheMicwithMike 4 жыл бұрын
That’s right, when you save to memory mode that’s the settings and they won’t change. Back in frequency mode, you can change everything without anything happening to the memory mode saves you have already made.

You have to select them individually before saving then it does. Otherwise it won’t actually open the repeater you maybe wanting to work on.

can somebody tell me. if i want to listen to what everybody is saying on the repeater, do i need to connect to it or only to listen to the frequency? also after being connected to it, everything transmitted on my part will be broadcasted from the tower?
@OnTheMicwithMike
@OnTheMicwithMike 4 жыл бұрын
If you only want to listen to a repeater, you only need to use the repeater's transmit frequency. You'll hear everyone who operates through the repeater. You'll only transmit through the repeater if you are talking on the transmitter's receive frequency.

If you're new to radio then most of what you can use on those Baofeng radios require a license. They are generally handheld ham radios (amateur radio). Using them can land you in hot water if not properly licensed 👍🏻

@OnTheMicwithMike
@OnTheMicwithMike 3 жыл бұрын
It all depends on where you are really, it’s a shame in some places that analogue repeaters have been changed for digital. Here in southeast England we have a good number of analogue 2m and 70cm repeaters still. All you can really do it follow suit if you use repeaters. Pick up a compatible handheld I guess. I must admit I don’t use repeaters at all, but I can relate that it must be frustrating for folks who do and they swap over the analogue repeaters for digital.

@@mahoneyiii6264 got ya, okay well... to be honest it's not a walkie talkie as such. It's a ham radio. Using it on the majority of the frequencies on the radio can land you in hot water if you're not a licensed amateur/ham. But it can be programmed to work on PMR446/FRS etc (dependant on where you are). But again, due to the higher power of the radio it's again not technically legal to use on those frequencies either. Unfortunately, those radios are sold in the thousands online, and even the sellers don't realise people can get into bother with them with the authorities. You'd be far better of buy a set of legal PMR 446 handheld walkie talkies and they will be already programmed to use.

Hi Mike, excellent video btw! I am a complete newbie here and I wondered if I could ask for help? I’m waiting to start my Foundation course, either 19th July or 2nd August, online, I have signed up to RSGB (waiting on my new members pack), and have just bought the Kindle version of The Foundation License Manual, and have just received my first handset, a GT-3PT today. Been studying the booklet and playing around in the menu, so have sussed out how to use the menu fine, even though I have to learn what it all means! it’s just I want to get listening to whatever and whoever I can on it as I understand there are a few Amateur Radio enthusiasts in my area, until I can talk on air myself, once I have my license obviously (hopefully!). I am in Barnsley, S. York’s, so I now understand by searching for the local repeater information, and programming it in as you describe (best video I have seen on this as you articulate brilliantly and other videos confused me lol) I would be able to listen to others chatting on air? I’m 48, good with gadgets and am about to start studying the foundation manual, so I will know the very basics - I just really wanna start listening to whatever I can until I can talk on air myself. Am I correct here...? Sorry for the essay, just wanted to be clear - apologies if I sound thick lol. I’ve subbed, liked and will share too. Thank you very much 👍🏻

Hiya, firstly thanks very much. It's most appreciated for the kind words. I have updated this older video with a newer one which is even a little easier. As for listening to hams on repeaters, at the moment you wouldn't really need to program it up fully. When I was studying a few years ago for the foundation I just programmed in the receive frequency into my old Baofeng. I didn't need a tone or offset as I wasn't transmitting and was much easier. It's a good way of learning some of the etiquette on 2m and 70cm using those repeaters. If you just program the receive frequency, and providing you are within range of the repeater(s) you wish to listen to, you'll have no problems hearing people chatting. Good luck with the foundation, it really does open the door to all manner of radio. It's not just 2m and 70cm but you'll be able to DX on the HF bands and use digital modes etc. A whole new world of radio to explore :) 73' and stay safe Mike.

On The Mic with Mike - Many thanks for the reply, very much appreciated 👍🏻...Yeah, I have just been out with the dog, to our local highest spot, a big hill, and by scanning the top numbers on the screen I only got random noise, in the VHF band. Then when I walked into some thick woods, picked up 2 Spanish guys talking lol. Make of that what you will 😂 but was pleased anyway. Is the top set of numbers the frequency to put in the repeater frequency to just listen? Thank you again, loving the vids

Yes these are not walkie talkies. They are ham radios and require a license. That's the issue with these nowadays, sellers on eBay and Chinese selling sites selling them as walkie talkies, when in fact using them without a ham license could get you in hot water. You can use PMR (private mobile radio) which are radios that are license free, and those are totally fine to use as walkie talkies. The only problem is you won't get too far with them as the range on them are generally less than line of sight. You can program the Baofeng to use PMR but that would be at your own risk, because using one on there is illegal. If you want to check out a license free walkie talkie have a look online for PMR 446 license free radios.
