And Iga’s forehand often “break the plane”. So next time people criticize break the plane, we can show them Iga swing. I think it also has something to do with her western grip and the high bouncing balls at French open. I bet her ball speed will drop substantially in Wimbledon. Appreciate your insight 👍🎾

Hi Nikos, Thanks for the kind words. I try hard to be creative and effective. Just a thought I'll be making a video on this same movement in relation to the serve next week. If one or a few of your students want to be in it. Take a video of them doing the dance and then the stroke. Send me the videos and details on your tennis school and I'll try and include it in the video I make on the serve. If that's not interesting for them, no problem. Thanks once again Have a great day Steve

Powerful idea. One of my best shots is what I call the pull up forehand. I think of my hips getting ahead of the ball in time, and my racket hitting a ball a little late. It is probably my best shot. I will now try to apply this idea to other types of my forehand.

Small observation: As we age, peripheral vision diminishes gradually. As result we unconsciously adapt and turn our shoulders less to be able to keep a more direct sight of the ball, ending up hitting with the arm only, without shoulder rotation. Twist stretch exercises of the neck has helped me somewhat overcome this problem.

Very peculiar concept besides worthy of a try and seems impressive. One question i have. I observed you on many occasions you load your weight on right leg in a closed stance forehand. At times i have seen my self loading body weight on left leg when the ball is slow and i am attacking it but when ball is coming fast i tends to load my body weight on right leg as you did. However, in open stance i always load on right leg. I have following questions would appreciate you taking time and answering them. 1) In a close stance right handed forehand which leg should hold up body weight. 2) Many times people say going towards the ball which is yet to arrive in a unit turn hamper your kinetic chain. Should we be in a unit turn only when we have reached near the bal and about to hit it? (Say i am running to hit forehand from left corner to right corner) in this case shall i be in complete unit turn on my way running to right

Coach what would you say is the driver in a serve motion?
@at1838
@at1838 2 жыл бұрын
fantastic. you outdid yourself this time! the driver passenger analogy is very useful in tennis on all strokes. would you something like this for the backhand? as a point of caution, i think that some people might exaggerate the hip motion or overlook the fact that the hip and torso must STOP in order to "release" the arm, that is, transfer their momentum to it. the tricky thing is that after the release they are then free to relax again, which easily confuses people watching slo mo videos who think that the hips torso shoulder remain active the entire time rather than, in their turn, becoming passengers of the momentum from the initial phase of the stroke. does that make sense?

Thank you! How do you prevent the balls going long? Do you put more spin on the ball? instead of hitting “three balls in a row”? Or making the racquet face a bit closed when hitting the ball?
@charlesfaure1189
@charlesfaure1189 Жыл бұрын
In modern tennis the depth of shot is controlled with height and spin. The more upward the stroke, the more natural spin is available, given proper technique. As you hit the ball flatter, you'll get less spin, but far less control. Too much spin on a flat ball will make it drop short and bounce right into your opponent's striking zone. So yes, spin is the key to making the ball come down inside the court and for consistency in general, rather than making changes in swing speed, which would make for inconsistency.

Great video Steve, I have one question, let's suppose that I am fully loaded to hit a forehand, with the unit turn complete and the knees bend, which movement should I do to trigger the shot? Hip rotation or leg drive?
@brodaism
@brodaism 2 жыл бұрын
Good question. I have thought about that a lot. Well if you look at Force chain then it should be the legs. Having said that you don't load your legs for all your tennis shots. So I would say the hips and then the question is how do you activate hips and my answer is you use your non-heating arm. So you forcefully draw it in words that sort of activates forehand

Hi Javier, Great question. Kinetic chains work from the ground up. So the obvious answer is. The legs. But The hip turn is much slower than the leg drive. So if you begin with the turn of the hips. And then the leg drive automatically kicks in. The energy from both movements reach hip height at about the same time. Does that make sense?
@Desknotelan
@Desknotelan 2 жыл бұрын
@@oneminutetennis Agree. And I think hip is easier to perform angular rotation than legs and is strong enough. So using hip to drive power is more effective esp. right after legs rushing to hitting positions.

@oneminutetennis
@oneminutetennis 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rich, More than anything, I think you need to concentrate on the wrist and the shoulder being passengers, receivers... If they have any resistance then the power from the hips is totally nullified. Does that help?

@@oneminutetennis get those dance hips moving youre saying 🤣 Yes keep the driver hips swinging and slight bend in the knee to torque those hips up and around more powerfully. I definitely haven't been bending the knees enough my bad! Great video Steve thank you 🙂

@@oneminutetennis the common tendency is to brace the wrist, brace the shoulder for impact. Old school thinking, it's going to take a quiet court and some determined practice to time the kinetic chain sequentially but I have those fundamentals, now for some muscle memory. I find I can do it right one day then completely forget half the technique the next day. More practice makes the technique easier to remember. I caught the strings perfect on a return the other night it took off like a laser with little sound and lots of pop with plenty of topspin. My opponent was as startled as I was. Very satisfying when it all comes together in competition. 👍

@twinwankel
@twinwankel 2 жыл бұрын
Steve, I agree to a certain extent but it's the legs that drive the hips. You need to load the legs effectively by dropping down and then powerfully pushing up. I think men still has the advantage there. Otherwise, WTA players would choose other females as hitting partners but they don't do they? Novak does not hit the hardest ball. He prefers a safe rally ball while Iga is a very aggressive striker so I'm not surprised that Iga hits a heavier ball on average. But when Novak gets an easy put away, he will hit it faster than Iga, guaranteed. Thanks for the video.
@oneminutetennis
@oneminutetennis 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. I think your right about the legs. But. And it's a big but. At the French open only Sinner hit faster and with more spin the Swiatek. www.wtatennis.com/news/2623526/inside-the-rise-of-iga-swiatek-blistering-forehands-and-unmatched-aggression This is the WTA article. And her fastest ball was faster than Novak's fastest ball. So the high put away Forehand was not faster. Amazing stats that we can learn from.
