I was in Germany last time at April and I also learn German. Every single time when I tried to speak in German and they realized I am a foreigner whose German is not the best ALL of them switched to English. I understand it makes conversation easier and it is a polite thing to do but it makes learning German much difficult if you are not able to use it even in Germany.

@@OrkarIsberEstar While what you're saying isn't false, "Sie" is very formal and usually puts a distance between you and the person you're talking to. It is mostly used if you talk to elderly people, in a work environment or if you're talking to people of public service, just to be more respectful. On the other hand if you're young and talk to people of around the same age as you, it would sound very unnatural to use "Sie" towards them.

I'm learning Ancient Greek and I swear this shit is about three times harder than Latin, the absolute get-a-new-form-for-anything bitch. The bigger problem is vocabulary for me, I cannot remember that shit.

After that verb conjugation mishegoss, I needed intensely loud Rammstein and a sedative . I only know Italian and English from my parents , so this was a whole new world of an over engineered language art . My husbands German aunt didn’t help much except for the lenbkuchenhaus recipe for the extra credit project. Woman spoke way too fast ! School ends next week . Never been happier to move on to physics and calculus. Much respect for those that can pick it up easily . At least I now have enough language skill to get mugged rather politely in Berlin.

@@moonhunter9993 Actually you don't have to guess the vowels. The video that would put you off learning German. I learned some when I was 21 from a native speaker. Only the class fizzled out with fewer and fewer students until only I was left and in the second year was put into the intermediate class with people who had been learning it for at least two years as there was no improvers class so I gave up as I couldn't keep up. A course mate and friend said she could hear me trying to sound like Hitler and then giggling so that put her off. I never used it and ended up visiting France while I was taking the beginner's course. Maybe I did a bit when in Austria. So I learned American English instead as a lot of Germans and French people learn American English instead of British English. Or maybe both versions of English.

It drives me nuts that my former British jail of a country is now a US vassal state, and when I go to Europeans for some culture I get not the English of their actual neighbour, but the American stuff. I'm used to Asians who aren't from former British colonies being Americanised, but I thought that was down to them only learning English en masse quite recently. And yet random Brits pronounce French better than me...

German is really difficult. But the reasons you told us about are not difficult for me. And yeah, I'm russian. We have all of these things in our language. And German... It's completely different. different genders, different rules (most of them don't work properly). That's why it's so hard. Like russian. And it's awesome. And I really love how german sounds. Bright and strong language 2:10 doctor DIY?

2:49 Simple solution: The Canadian speaks in German and the German in English, since active vocabulary is usually smaller than passive one it's good training for both of you.

One rule for the article: alcohol beverages are masculine, except of beer (which is neutrum). I think because Germans drink beers like water (water is also neutrum) 🙈

Hehe I learned French. Not only do they have articles and the genders are often different than in my native language. There are some words that change meaning depending on the gender. French also has long words but usually shorten them to like 2 syllables which makes spoken French really hard to understand.

I am from the French speaking part of Switzerland. Learning my words with the right artikel was horrible but with hours and hours of work I did it. But stilled the Dativ/Accusativ table! I’d never won this war! So 10 to 15 minutes before each exams I was memorising the tables visually and at the minute that I sit on my chair, I copy it on a sheet! 😈 It wasn’t cheating because it enter in the exam room in my head but yeah it wasn’t really academic 😅

My favourite is... umfahren vs umfahren ...where 'umfahren' (drive AROUND something) is the exact opposite of 'umfahren' (drive OVER something) "Damit wir es nicht umfahren müssen wir es umfahren". MUHAHA (evil laugh) And now search youtube for 'Rhabarberbarbara' - there's one with english subtitles.
