Ja, I remember one time, photographing in mountains in California, the other photographers were leaving, as I arrived ... I was "late", but just in time for alpen glow, and soft, soft, pinkish light, reflections down from clouds...bristlecone pines. Sometimes, "light," is what you make of it, as you show in many of these instances. Funny thing, too, that in the North (or South ), the light is that "golden hour", low in the sky, for hours...in winter ;-) Nice video, Christian!

Hi Lohi, thank you so much, my friend. Really cool that you experienced an equal situation with leaving when others came :) And yes, the sun has a quite different behavior on different latitudes. At the equator even the opposite is the case. The days are shorter and the golden hour is quite quickly over :) Have a great weekend, Christian

Hi Darren, thank you so much, buddy :) This is really kind! Light is indeed an important topic. I didn't think about that, but maybe I should add it to my "For new viewers" tab. I will think about it :) Thank you and nice greetings, Christian

A very thought provoking video. I have gradually broadened my landscape photography. I used to avoid flat, overcast lighting and missed many image opportunities. Videos like this have encouraged me try different lighting that I used to consider 'poor'. I agree there is much rubbish talked about 'the golden hour'. I use The Photographer's Ephemeris to plan shots and in the help files for this application, there is a very detailed explanation of how 'the golden hour' varies with location, time of year etc and also varies in length and light quality. 'The blue hour' is also similarly misunderstood. I often see so-called blue hour shots where the blueness comes from poorly adjusted white balance which often spoils an otherwise excellent image.

Hi Berny, thank you so much for your kind comment and your contribution of telling your experience :) Yes, golden hour is a fantastic time for photography, but it is by far not the only possibility we have in landscape photography. Nice greetings from Austria, Christian

I have been checking out more of your videos after really enjoying your video yesterday on where to focus. That video solved my major problem with focusing as almost every landscape photographer vlogger advocates only the hyperfocal method or the one-third method (those just created more problems and frustrations for me). I think you have become my favorite landscape photography guru now! Great job.

Just starting to investigate landscape photography, love your videos. How does one meter to take in the wide dynamic range in these kind of images?

Hi @smkunder1, thank you so much for your kind feedback on my videos :) In most of the cases you are fine with matrix metering. I would just recommend always to have a look at the histogram of all channels. Merry Christmas, Christian

BTW, you can often find these special areas of light, in a scene, by remembering that long lenses can isolate a beautiful, small area, and compress the "texture" in the landscape, so that even a "prairie" can look like rolling hills...
@christian.irmler
@christian.irmler 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, definitely. Longer focal lenses are so good to isolate areas, which works fantastically with lightspots, as well :) Nice greetings, Christian

Another little thing, is polarization of light, when you can get really saturated sky, especially at high elevations, at 90° from the sun...you can get *really* dark skies with clear skies, and 2000 m elevation ... in addition to the many times that *you* have shown effective polarizer use for foliage.
@christian.irmler
@christian.irmler 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I can confirm that. It gets even better with using an infrared camera, by the way, with the right filter on it. This can lead even into totally black skies :)

Interesting. I had a look, the links appear as they should. I recognized this once, too, that links don't pop out sometimes, not only on my channel. I hope it works meanwhile. If you need a particular links, just tell me. I can send you, of course.
