What are ways you use templates to increase your mixing workflow efficiency?

Usually the Tracks are Color coated which helps. Making sure all tracks are labeled matching my ch. labelling correctly in the DAW on my End.

In my template, I run my final 2 bus and all of the final plugins as an Aux BEFORE the stereo output. My stereo output NEVER has plugins on it. This way, I am able to have reference tracks, mix versions, and original demos go directly to my stereo output with no plugins, all within the same session.

Actually, pretty close to Marc's template in a smaller way, except it is adapted to Studio One. It is so powerful. I got folder bus inside studio one for each groups which auto assign any tracks that are added into the folder and the colors automatically follow also. Then, every folder-bus goes to a main bus for each "Stems" like Drums including percussion, Bass, Keys, BG, Vocals etc. finally I got a little section of Verb and Delay. It is an incredible way to start anything. I would love to have the multioutput from protools inside Studio One but beside that, it is so fast with Studio One I Love it.

I have been using mixtemplates in my workflow for a long time because of your great advice Marc! Has improved my mixes and the time it takes me to mix a song. That is huge for a hobby musician like me! So thanks again for all the great videos. Keep ‘em coming! Cheers!

Just wow. amazingly effective, I work as a video editor in advertising and when I consider how organized and in depth version/variations are on picture side, I thought the audio team had it easier but music mixing vs what we send as OMFs/ AAFs is no joke! Just wow.

wow! this is absolutely brilliant! the multing for ITB and Analog is just incredible...I thought my template was huge and complicated, but the two discrete destinations is on another level. So much of this is so similar to what I've done over the years with respect to having the channels and plugins available (but inactive) to start with and having everything bussed correctly as though it's all a dedicated custom console ready to go. Thanks for sharing!

I’m kind of in the same boat. I use a console, so I’m not sure if I’ll ever be able to print all stems at the same time (shared reverbs) but I’m trying to narrow things to where I can do them all in just a few passes. Time to get a template that makes everything as easy on myself as I can. 😬

Exactly how I like to group and colour code things. Also like different shades of the same colour for similar instruments ie: light green for acoustic guitar, dark green for electric guitar. Makes so much sense to me. Aside from that this is complicated AF. It seems engineers have to do so much these days just to adhere to certain trends or whatever, even more so with the introduction of Atmos and 360. Used to be that you'd print a mix and that was it, and not all that long ago either. Anyway, modern times, cool things happening, much to learn 👍

My template in Logic is very similar, thanks Marc! At the moment I'm not doing much outside work, so I don't need the stems section but I am curious. Am I missing something in how the shared plugins (ie API EQ) are being cloned? As in, change the main one all the others change as well. I may just be confused, haha! Would love to see you do a vid on how to get that Sun Records sound Marc. You have your own California sound that is similar to it in my opinion, particularly when it comes to the reverbs. Maybe you could discuss that sound and how you get your own that is so classic, warm and similar? All the best, thanks.

Hey Marc. Thanks for this. How do you make sure your plugjn settings on your stems are the same as the master - do you just groups on those slots? And if you have let's say an ATR on very instance of the stems - doesn't that build up too much with 10x tape saturation? Thanks for showing. - Also do I understand it correctly - you don't have any shared reverbs across the groups, in order to bounce the stems with their respective fx. I thought about this, but I actually didn't implement it. I used to think a shared reverb was the magic glue to a mix.
@HalCBass
@HalCBass Жыл бұрын
I am number of years ago Mitt Guzowski presenting a similar layout… Every stem has its own reverbs and master bus so all the stems are completely self-contained. The next level of that is I think he Mick described putting the same master chain on each stem and then side chaining it Two the full mix… (that was not ready to run out put,)So the Guitar’s would react the same way they would if there was a full mix playing… If that makes any sense

This might be a bonehead question, but it sounded like Marc was saying he's able to make a change on one plugin (e.g. EMT 250) and have other instantiations of that plugin mimic the settings changes. If this is true...how? If not, can someone explain what he really meant?
@junovue

That’s a feature of pro tools to group by insert idk if that’s the actual name. It’s different from putting your tracks in a bus and applying one plugin. I believe in this case all tracks will have the same plugin and then if u select this group by insert option one change from a plugin updates the rest that are linked.

This is awesome. I produce trailer music and have a template of some 180 tracks with various reverbs, sends and sidechains setup already, everything grouped for stem rendering later. Cool to pick up some new tips. Oh, and I think the stem reverb thing isn't an issue in reverb? Even if you have different tracks sending to a single reverb, when stems are rendered it does them one at a time so there reverb only ends up on that stem.

Good video and content, but I think it would have been more useful to take one, the most complex, stem and break it down top to bottom (how and why he set up the sends and returns the way he did, etc.) than jumping around all over the template, it was a bit distracting. Going to have to watch it a couple of times to piece it all together.
