Hey Tara ! I love your videos and you've taught me SO MUCH! I have questions for you. How do you measure the PH of sugar scrubs do you also mix them with water like in the video? Also my sugar scrubs are oil based however I can imagine water getting into them while used. Is It better for me to stick with Leucidal SF complete or Optiphen as a preservative? I could really used your help with figuring this out. Please respond whenever you can I would really appreciate it. Thank you again for all you've taught me!

Hello Tara. You are amazing! I learned so much from you about the sugar scrubs that I've always wanted to make and how exactly to measure the pH of the product. Just one questions - since most sugar scrubs have no water (we want to keep them that way, when and how do you measure the pH? Obviously i the process of creation but when? Is this pH meter measures in oil or even in a mixture of oils and sugars? Thank you again. Your videos are precious

Hey tara, I thought that pH measured the concentration of either hydrogen ions or hydroxide ions in a solution. You said that distilled water likes to take on the pH of whatever you mix it in with, but shouldn't it be diluting the H+ or OH- ions in the solution? Shouldn't you have to take into consideration the amount of water you are diluting your cream or serum to get an accurate pH measurement? I just finished my college chemistry lab and these things are fresh in my mind, but I don't know too much about cosmetic chemistry and formulations, so I thought I would ask.

Yeah, this is what happens. It’ll adjust the pH up or down based on the initial product, so you’ll need a calculation to find out your initial product’s pH. I’m sure there are some online, but if you just did college chemistry, you should be familiar with ICE tables. For this sort of test, you have the change, equilibrium, and starting quantities of water and product, so you should be able to calculate your product’s proton concentration from it.

so before we pour the cream/serum/face wash into packaging bottle, we should measure the PH while the product is still inside the beaker right? do we have to add water inside the beaker or do we pour like small amount of our product in another small beaker like you did in this video? after that how do we adjust the actual ones inside the beaker ?
@brittlesinreallife

i know this is a dumb question but when testing the pH of a product i assume you add whatever you are using to adjust the pH directly into the product and then create the diluted solution with the newly adjusted product and figure out if you need to adjust it again from there correct? Also are you making about 1 ounce to test?

Hello! Very informative video. Definitely needed this. I am a little confused when you say you add 10% of product & 90% of water. How are you measuring this? There is no batch to measure for, so how are you measuring the 10%? Is it the the weight of the beaker?
@trianna2008

Rather than 10% of the original batch, she’s referring to making a new solution that’s 10% product and 90% water. And these are percentages by weight, hence the scale.

@dimitrivanderbellen6443
@dimitrivanderbellen6443 3 жыл бұрын
elise Yes, you must check the pH of each batch that you make for several reasons. First, the pH of your water may vary slightly, each time, due to the source or qualify of the purification methods used. The pH of your raw ingredients could vary slightly as well due to the age or degree of freshness. Slight errors in measurements can affect pH. The temperature of the room that was used at the time your batch was prepared can also vary pH. The same raw ingredient could be processed differently between manufacturers which can also cause pH levels to vary. All you have to do is check the ph of your final product and you’ll know whether it’s at 5.5 or not.
@dimitrivanderbellen6443
@dimitrivanderbellen6443 3 жыл бұрын
@Gio Marrocco Once you’ve made your cream, as a final step you’ll always need to add a few drops of a buffer solution, such as diluted citric acid to lower the pH, or diluted sodium hydroxide to raise the pH, to as close as 5.5 as you can. Go to KZfaq or do a Google search for “How to adjust the pH of a _____ (cream, lotion, etc...) to learn how it’s done. Good luck!

Does the manual of your pH meter instruct you to add water to measure the pH of creams? The reason I ask is I found the following quote online: “Adding water to an acid or base will change its pH. Water is mostly water molecules so adding water to an acid or base reduces the concentration of ions in the solution. When a solution is diluted with water the pH of the solution will increase or decrease towards a neutral pH of 7.” If this is the case, won’t adding water to your cream give you inaccurate pH readings? I’ve seen a demo of an expensive Hanna pH meter where the probe was stirred directly into the cream without adding water. But I’m not prepared to pay $500 for such a meter. I need a accurate but economical pH meter designed to be used in creams of light to medium viscosity. I’m curious if there’s any mention of this in the owner’s manual of your meter.

You really should check the ph of you distilled water, some are not the perfect theoric 7. And no, the pH you are reading is not the pH of your cosmetic, you have to ajust it to your dilution ... You did a 1/10 dilution, so it would bring the pH of your solution 1 unit closer to 7 (being a log10 of concentration of H+ ions). The difference isn't huge, but it's still important, especially if you use pH dependant preservatives, or ahas etc Hope this helps !

you want to keep your products around 5-6 since our skins PH is roughly around 5.5 Some products may need a lower ph. For example; products containing alpha hydroxy acids need a ph of around 3.5 - 4. There are some other ingredients as well that are only active in specific ph levels. So keep that in mind when you are choosing your ingredients for a product.

Just watched a weed grower say that all those meters are essentially the same components and equally as good. The customer service and warranty is the difference. I notice on Amazon, a lot of things are obviously made in the same factory but be sold by different companies for different prices. I wonder if this is one of those times. They're using the same components. Edit. Okay saw your perks with the better meter. Is there a reason why you chose that brand vs the Apera I see a lot of people use? I'm just starting my PH meter research rabbit hole. I spent days just on beakers omg. I wish there wasn't so much cheap crap we have to sift thru to find quality built items. This throw away culture is really time consuming.

As I said in the video, I can’t show the results of the cheaper one because there is no hold button on it that keeps the ph reading from changing. So I’m not able to lift the ph meter out of the solution to show it. I literally explained this in the video. And actually this video just proved that the cheaper ph meter is a good and accurate ph meter that I recommend. The readings of each ph meter were very close to one another. Both ph meters are great and I recommend both of them. I just think the more expensive one is better for more experienced formulators who use ph meters often. This was not a paid advertisement. I bought this ph meter myself. If this was a paid advertisement there would have been a disclaimer saying so. it’s illegal to have a paid advertisement without disclosure.
