@Videditor1067 Yes, you should reverse the phase of the bottom tom mic. Listen to the difference with the phase reversed, and not reversed. Try to hear how when the phase isn't reversed, the tom loses it's bottom end, and has a comb-filtering effect through the rest of the frequency spectrum. I also generally mix in a little bit less of the bottom mic vs top. However, some engineers will even reverse the phase with a cable, and join the 2 mics with a "y" cable-into one ch. input.

@CPMFH I like this idea. We actually talked about it today as well. We will do this at some point, but are just crazy busy right now with other edits. Thanks for the comment!

Definitely for recording! Live it is nice to have your drums mic'd well (or mic'd at all), but it is imperative for a good drum sound. Do you need to mic the exact way they are? No, but there are other videos that show smaller micing set ups.

The “42157” mic clip works great on toms as it combines the MD421 w/ a SM57.

@MarcAnMod Mostly aesthetics... We need clip-on mics to have a clean, unobtrusive look. We like the sound of the e604's the best for a clip-on. If video was not an issue, I would have the bottom tom mics more towards the center and pointed straight at the drum. Because we use a 57 on the bottom snare (that's on a mic stand), I can place the mic where I prefer to have it.

I have AKG 40 mics with the AKG rim clips. I like these Sennheiser clips much more because you have much more manuverablilty with them. Will the Sennheiser clips work with the AKG mics and can you purchase them seperately. What is the part # of the Sennheiser clips. Great, informative videos. I have learned a tremendous amount from your vids. Thanks so much.

So like the snare, would you have to phase reverse the under tom mic? I have never mic'd the tom reso before.

Between bottom and top placement, is there a dramatic change? I'm concern about the cable sticking out too high that I need to adjust cymbal placements.

If you use two mics per drum, do you use a "Y" XLR to send the pair to each mixer channel?

Victor... Guess this would be a trade-off, but wanted your thoughts on this approach. With cardioid tom mics, with my rack toms are close together I don't aim the mic straight back like you. I try to use the weakess off axis position of the mic and place that near the next tom. Trying to get each tom as ISO'd as it can without getting into gating. I have enough gear to carry around. Thoughts?

The microphone is relative. Get a good name brand like Shure or Sennheiser and you're golden. The real key to your great drum sound is how you have it mixed. What are you doing and using behind the board?

I wonder why you guys put the snare reso mic dead on the center of the head orthogonal to it and for the toms mirror the play head mic's position. Is there any particular reason for this difference?

If you use mics with tight polar patterns, phasing isn't as much of a problem.

overhead mics are usually condesner mics, and you need dynamic ones for you toms. look up the difference between both types :)

You've probably figured this out but, if you're working in a DAW you should use a noise gate. It's an effect that can help get rid of mic bleed. Look up a video on it. Just for future reference, EQ isn't going to solve all of your problems.

If you are micing top and bottom, you must invert polarity on one of the mics. If your board does not support polarity inversion, you will more than likely get frequency cancellations on the drum - this equates to poor sound quality.

I think that the room you record drums in affects the sound mostly, then the mics and tuning. I wouldnt say the drum brand realy matters that much these days. You can have a decent kit tuned and it will still sound like crap in a shitty room

you don't "have" to....if an engineer places the mics well, phase coherency is not a problem.....you have to invert polarity when mics are not placed well

not entirely true.. in case of Blumlein tech (where a specific sound & function is needed) phase polarity is just a fact that must be dealt with. Not merely because the engineer is weak. But there is truth in your statement as well.
