How to mix concrete with a mixer paddle

In this video I mix up some granolithic mortar using a mixer paddle, last year I mixed several batches of concrete the same way. This is a great way to mix concrete at home and is much easier than using a shovel.
The ratios for the concrete were as follows-
Concrete using ballast- 6 units of ballast and 1 unit of cement by volume (not weight)
Concrete using gravel- 4 units of gravel, 2 units of sharp sand and 1 unit of cement by volume.
Granolithic mortar - 4 units of grano dust to 1 unit of cement
Granolithic mortar (smooth) - 3 units of grano dust, 1 unit of sharp sand and 1 unit of cement.

Spot on that’s how I do it even down to the cleaning of the paddle straight after each mix in a separate bucket. Thanks for sharing the knowledge

When mixing concrete I always used to put the water in 1st in a mixer,with bricklaying mortar always dry mix and add water last.

Yeah, most people do it that way with a cement mixer, but when using a tub like in this video, I add the water last. Thanks for the comment 👍

great tip. i have done this several times. not sure i would use it to mix the amount you did but we do have a cement mixer so i have that choice. some people use a 2 bucket method where they pour from one to the other several times as they add water. never tried it but would be interesting to see other methods

Great vid! I have that same mixer I think. Is it the Bauker? I always use it for multi-finish, but would it handle mixing through ballast and cement without burning out?

Mine is the Evolution Twister 👍 I’ve mixed several tubs of concrete made using ballast and cement with no problems 👍

Great video. Thanks for the tips. Have you used the pointing gun before? I've not had much success with the right type of mixture for this. Or more specifically I spent way to long being an alchemist than actual repointing of the bricks on the day. In fear of this happening again for the 2nd session guidance is most welcomed! 😂

I tried a pointing gun about 20 years back, when I was repointing a house. I made a mix and put it into the gun, squeezed the handles and all the water squirted from the end and the sand and cement was solid in the barrel 😂 However, my patio was re-laid a few years back and I pointed it using Bostick wide jointing compound (utter rubbish), so I re-pointed it a few weeks back using a pointing gun. I used a mix of 5 building sand to 1 cement, but used SBR instead of water. I then mixed it really well, then mixed it some more. Once you get used to it, you can make a creamy mix, that will exit easily from the gun 👍

This would work well with smaller sized aggregates and in small quantities. Larger sized aggregates and larger batches might be hard on the mixer.

Cement mixer for wet laying concrete. ½ bucket water, 3 shovels of ballast, all your cement, another bucket of water, rest of your ballast. Same mix every time and a clean drum.

Never used platiciser in concrete would it not weaken the concrete ?

I don’t think so, I’ve been using it for years in mixes, with no problems (yet) 👍
