How To Modify Pattern Pieces To Create A Custom Clothing

In this video we go a bit deeper into pattern hacking with a look at how to modify pattern pieces. Sometimes a few simple changes can really change up the look of a design!
I received a picture of a dress for a little girl with the request to recreate this same look for a doll. The dress has simple lines and a beautiful hi-lo design focal point. With a few tweaks and modifications to the Starlight Gala pattern, I knew I could achieve a similar look.
For this tutorial, I'll be demonstrating on a new dress made with a modified skirt from the Starlight Gala pattern and a simple modification to the bodice front. Follow along with me in the video below to see how I made the changes to the pieces and created something similar to the inspiration image.

When my daughter was younger, I used to sew her clothes. Back then, I couldn't afford to buy a lot of different patterns so I used to mix & match the patterns to create a new outfit. I would take the sleeves of one pattern, the collar of another pattern and a different skirting from another pattern. My knowledge of sewing back then was good but I am far from being a professional or even a design creator. But I always did make it work. I was just sad when she got old enough to decide that clothes made by her mama wasn't trendy enough to wear. I now make clothes for 18" dolls and I enjoy creating new designs by mixing and matching pattern pieces. These videos reminded me of days gone by. Thank you.

I love how you took the Starlight Gala and Blossom patterns and modified them to make this blue bow dress. It is one of my favourites you have made.

Cinnamon, the blue dress is beautiful. I think it would be a great pattern to add to your beautiful formal dress collection. I learned so much with every video I watch and this video is no different, You have changed my life and my daughters lives. We all love Pixie Faire. My daughter lives in Alaska and she called me and said, I met Cinnamons dad!" This was several years ago and my daughter went to a garage sale and got to talking with your dad. The garage sale was at your sisters home. Hopefully your family is still doing well.

Love the two tier blue dress. I have made something similar but I get impatient especially when I am short on time so I cut and gathered together a shorter and longer skirt, pinned them on the doll lining up the back seam and took scissors to angle cut the top layer manually. Flattened out the top layer, sketched out a copy of the new skirt pattern for future use, and then hemmed and attached the skirts to the bodice. No math which works for me!

Very interesting method for moving the seam to the side. Took me a hot second to wrap my brain around the flipping part until I realized you needed side seams. I think I might have missed you saying you need to add seam allowances for the waist - I made a circle skirt pattern years ago and forgot that seam allowance and couldn’t figure out why the waist was too big and the length was too short. Boy did I feel silly when I realized my mistake
