After I got my fish tank, I started using the aquarium water from water changes to water my plants, and I also use that water to water propagate. It has made a HUGE difference! Roots grow quick, big, and strong!

The Plant Parent anxiety! 😵 Gosh the most stressful moment of propagation. Great informative video Harli! This will help lots of plant parents. I love how you stressed how much individual conditions play such a big factor. That is SO overlooked in our community! I have challenging light conditions. Mostly northeastern exposure so what works for me is a mix of organic seed starter, coco coir, perlite and worm poop. Light, airy, holds just enough moisture but drains well. That's what works for me.

So I make my own compost dirt: dumping dry leaves on my grass 1 day before the Gardners, results are a mixture of Carbon (dead leaves) and Nitrogen (green cuttings). Mowing helps to mix them. I offer Starbucks a Home Depot bucket and ask for coffee grounds. I dump the three onto a black tarp (spring/Summer)- Coffee grounds add heat because it is black. Add water (shower mode or misting (get evenly wet). Make the pile no more than 2-3 feet tall and wide, but 5-6 ft long on a tarp that is 4-5 times the width of your pile. You want to allow air-flow.Roll the role it every week (or sooner). Flip the none used 1/2 of the black tarp, over the pile, and place a brick/Rock to hold it down. The temperature will reach 180-220 F degrees and really cook the compost. Bacteria (a slight blue-green color is what you to want) grows that eats and converts the pile to a softer dirt compost. The role it over completely, then more water. after about 6 weeks you can notice that the grass is gone and the only little tiny chunks of leaves are left. I usually dump it into a pit I have and just use it as I need it. Kitchen scraps get put into a 1-gallon bag, then rebagged again to keep the smell from escaping. I usually leave everything in there for 2 weeks then I have a separate blender that I mix this with water and feed to my worms that I am using to compost the food into Black Gold soil. I use my dirt compost as the bedding for the worms and feed the worms on 1 end of the plastic tub (lowes/home depot) so the worms travel and eat the dirt compost while getting to the food compost. Blending it first just make sit easier for the worms to further decompose. I use my outputs as inputs. I then mix some of the dirt compost with the black gold and get the plants to grow much faster reaches the black gold (worm castings.. a fancy word for worm poop). I also put a few worms in the soil so they can continue to eat the potting soil (worms also double every three months). I am growing everything in a 5-gallon reservoir bucket system and even get the water to spill over and trap it so I can use worm tea (water passing over the black gold) to pour into other seedlings or smaller plants to help grow faster. Rooting is what I needed to learn about. I know much of what I wrote has nothing to do with rooting but I thought to help show how to eliminate the purchasing of potting soil. -- Thanks for reading my rant. -- Sean

You definitely understand a good bit about how plants work like fundamentally so don’t doubt yourself so much. You’ve got a lot of experience and more knowledge than you think. Harli, you are one of the few “chatty” KZfaqrs I’ve stuck with, because you stay on topic. Your delivery is energized and also quite helpful. I prop and repot the same way you discuss and demonstrate here, and have had reasonable success. I’ll need to get some of the Black Gold mix, however - to have on hand. I’ve been faring quite well with coco coir and an assortment of amendments. But it’s still a good idea to have a good quality soil on hand. Thanks for a great video.

I haven't had great success with soil prop, almost always do water. I put a piece of coffee filter over the drainage hole, I use the brown unbleached ones. By the time it deteriorates, the roots have taken hold. I also keep them moist for the first month, with a squirt bottle so they aren't saturated. Good vid!

Sometimes I use a piece of coffee filter at the bottom. It keeps the dirt in and allows drainage. This is a great video. Thank you

I started four Benjamina Ficus cuttings in water (different sizes and different parts of the plant). It's my first time. I didn't plan well, because it's wintertime and cold, so I placed clear plastic bags over them, and I think it really helped. After less than two weeks, two of my cuttings each had one very long, fast-growing root, and I truly mean *fast* . Each day I can visually see the growth, which is so cool. Now each of these is forming additional growth from it. Your video helped me. I'll let the roots get more developed, and perhaps add a little soil a few days before soil transplanting. Thank you 😍

Hi Harli, I love propagating cuttings, I have a creeping charlie that grows super crazy fast so I am always cutting it back and throwing the cuttings into water, also my lipstick plant and goldfish plant too. And I have a cup full of chopsticks that I use to prop plants up with, I do use other chopsticks to eat with, I learned how to use chopsticks before I learned to use a fork, lol. So I use them to eat everything with. I have a container of creeping charlie cuttings that I will be potting today, thank you for your tips and tricks, I just love watching your videos, I laughed out loud when you said worm poop, I must get me some of that worm poop, Lol for my plants. Hi Harli! Great video on transferring propagated plants. I like to do propagating in water just to see the roots growing - and I had the same problems with the transfer to soil. Now I use mineralic substrate and self watering systems like Lechuza. The fertilizer in this substrate can be a issue, so I use Seramis without fertilizer until the plants grows accustomed to substrate, and in the first two weeks or so I fill the pot to the rim with water. Then I switch gradually to Lechuza Pon and the usual watering routine. These planting pots are a bit pricey but... my pothos and hoya plants love it. The roots don´t rot in mineralic substrates even if I don´t know why, and I had no little insects in this. Also, it reduces the work with watering. So I switch bit by bit to this systems. Even Succulents and Cacti are okay with it, I just let them dry out two or three weeks if the waterlevel is on low. Other plants one week before I´m watering again. Fussy plants like my nepenthes that need little fertilizing like to sit in Seramis, too. Didn´t think it would work, but there you have it. I don´t know if you can get this systems where you live, but if you do, give it a try. Greez from Germany!

I just got my first roots! I took some cuttings from my Watermelon Pep and decided, what the heck, why not? After two weeks of nothing at all, I woke up this morning and noticed some roots! I put each in its own little cup with some fresh water, and now I wait! The Watermelon Pep is one of my favorites, so I am SO happy to potentially have a second plant- nervous about repotting them eventually, so thanks for this video!

Hello! I like to put my water propagations into soil after a good amount of root growth like you suggested. I mist them really well, then I pop them in a ziplock. I blow it up kinda like a balloon so that the leaves aren’t in contact with the bag. (Or you can use chop sticks to keep the “tent” up). I put them in bright light & NO direct sun. It’s like a mini greenhouse. After awhile, (depending on the type of plant) I will unzip the bag & leave it open and slowly maybe a week later pull the plant out all the way. Works super well with succulent propagation too!

After I make a pot with soil I water it first with room temperature rain water or aquarium water and allow it to drain to make sure it's not soupy but moist enough to support the habit of the root growth environment and from there I monitor its moisture level...and as rule of thumb for me it's about ready for normal treatment when the plant begins to put out new growth within it's new home.

Great video! The only thing I would like to say, is that letting the roots grow over 2 inches in water, can sometimes lead to shock when they are put in soil. I have had success with longer roots, however, but the likelihood of shock increases with each inch of root.

Loved this video! I'm going to use the chopstick tip! I'm currently propagating aloe, pothos, mint and peperomia jelly! I want to try my snake plant.

I find that using unbleached coffee filters on the bottom of small pots can be pretty useful to avoid a mess. It's biodegradable and it helps keep fine specks of soil from escaping. I usually lay 2-3 layers of filter, and then some pieces bark (like what you did) on top before potting.

Lol... I love the chopstick technique. I thought i was the only one who uses chopsticks in plants. You're so cool.

Found this while searching for advice on when to transplant some water-sprouted cuttings in the UK. Only culinary sage, nothing fancy, but I'd rather not kill them after waiting all this time, so I thought I'd check. On the point as to what to put in the bottom of the pot, I always go for stones or broken pot, for free drainage and a bit of weight to help stop them toppling over when the neighbour's cats get frisky. And some roots seem to like something to hang on to.

Hitta Harli! I really like your video and your tips. The mystery plant you repotted is Euphorbia grantii. It comes in three colors, green, red and green with red dots! Super easy plant. Important to cut it to get it to spread out and the cuttings I put directly in the same pot and to do so you get a really bushy plant fast! I have all three and the green and the dotted is really but the red one refuses to grow! I water them very seldom, when I remember, but they just keep growing and looking healthy.

Propagate cuttings in freshly soaked banana water the plants love it. Of course you need to refresh the water to have oxygen like you mentioned in other videos. ^^

Great video! Can only find black gold cactus mix in my area, which is great and I also use an organic potting mix. Mainly, I do same as you when propagating, but sometimes I don't let the roots grow too long -- depends on my patience level at the time😀😀.

Hi Harli! I have a question regarding a nice thick ZZ stem/stalk that I stuck in water about 6 months or so ago & I was stoked when I saw the first root pop out! I have been watching your channel & have learned so much from you. All of the advice you've given & your friendly disposition keeps me coming back to you. I think your just precious. So I'm wondering if I should use the above method to move my water propagated ZZ to soil, or of there is a better way I can go about doing this? I am super excited to hear what you've got to say because I've been so anxious to plant her in soil. She's got 5 stems that have also popped out each with one singular leaf & now i see that the stems are begining to pop roots as well...omg. Please Help ME figure this out sweet girl. Great video! I use a cut piece of plastic screen in the bottom of my pots. I don’t like the idea of using bleached coffee filters but really don’t know if it matters. I use happy frog soil. It’s an organic soil with worm castings. I only use organic fertilizers too. It’s my understanding they promote stronger plants better able to withstand infectious. I’m no expert but ....🌱🌸😬

I've been putting a little ripped off piece of natural sponge right in the bottom of my pots before placing the soil and plants on top. I think this helps especially for people who tend to overwater. Its like a safety net for loose debris and overwatering. Cant go wrong :)

I have been curious about the timing in transitioning water roots to the soil. I traded some plant cuttings with a neighbor, one was a red prayer plant. It was doing so well in water but once I transplanted it into soil the leaves curled up like tubes - all except one. It's been like that for months. Still alive though, lol. kind of think the water roots weren't long enough maybe, I was just too excited to plant it and get it growing though, lol. I'm almost tempted to put it back in water. Only tome will tell. Love your videos and personality!

I just watched the video on rooting in the sphagnum moss. Did you try a Lipstick plant in the moss ??? At my old house I had a spot that was perfect for my Lipstick cuttings. (Aeschynanthus Speciosus) I would actually take the cuttings and put them directly into a hanging basket and BOOM they took. This house I haven't found the same kind of spot.✌🏻❤🍃🌿🍃

I have maybe “dumb luck” with propagation lol. I have taken at least 10 cutting from my giant pothos plant (I have 5’ vines on it) and have completed at least 3 propagating sessions. I put them all in one planter. None of them have died, all the leaves survived. I currently have 2 coleus cutting propagating, which has been super easy so far. I just give all my cutting purified water, nothing from the tap because of the chlorine content where I am from, and a sprinkle of miracle grow and they root super fast for me. 🌿🌱

I have a ficus macrophilla cutting and this was very helpful to transplant it

In "olden day" (lol) we would use broken pot chunks to block the hole. Next time you have a cracked unglazed terra cotta pot, just tap it with a hammer and youll have pieces of various sizes for various holes. I keep a bowl of broken pieces in my basement. At the greenhouse, we called the pieces "crocks" ... But I have no idea why. But they work great and dont deteriorate.

I was JUST getting ready to pot up my variegated philodendron - Perfect timing for this vid!

I line the bottom of my pots with burlap (folded over a couple times, then I add some perlite & a bit of sand to help with drainage.

Put some soil into the new pot, so the plant will be at the right level. Then put your old pot in the new pot. Fill in between the pots and pack it in. Then slide the old pot out and put your plant in. WHALLA! Gerry 😎

I propagated 2 cuttings of a plant my mom had for a few years, because the plant was starting to die, for whatever reason and it made her really sad because it was one of her favorites. So I propagated 2 cuttings and both of them are growing roots. Really slow, but they do. I'll tell her that I propagated some on mothers day.

Hi Harley, Recently discovered your videos. Do you have a video on propagating long extensive root from water propagation to soil? How to help it assimilate to soil after living so long in water.

Adding soil little by little to the water makes so much sense.

I transfer from water to Sphagnum Moss for a few weeks then soil or grow cuttings right in the moss. The transfer from moss to soil is easier on plant. You can reuse the moss as long as no pest. 😁
