‘One of these have more roots that the other… doesn’t mean that this guy is a failure it’s just the conditions that I had it in are different…’ Such lessons to be learned about being human from plants.

So I've gotten really good at propagating my pothos but then when I transfer them I kill them. So I really needed this video. I don't remember what I did wrong the 1st time but the second time I read that to transition from being in water to soil you have to water them more often, which I know normally is terrible but I tried and they died. I also put them all in separate tiny pots but I see you put them together, and you gave them one good watering, the housewarming lol but then treat them like a normal pothos. So I've been scared to transfer my knew ones bc I don't want them to die but I think this video is going to help me with this next round. I'm gonna put them in one pot give them a housewarming and take care of them like my other pothos. Thank you!!!

@tammybooysen2685
@tammybooysen2685 3 жыл бұрын
@@jasmineromero-perez4070 hey jasmine ! The mother plant went through quite a rough mealy bug infestation (I didn’t see them when I unpacked it) so I repotted and transplanted little groups of cuttings into soil in hopes they would strengthen. I ended up placing quite a few together to start reviving a mother plant. (already rooted). This gratefully took off and is now thriving! I gently potted the rooted cuttings with the mother plant in a trailing position and to fill it out when they were healthier and mealy bug free! I later gathered some cuttings from my plant and my sisters as well and placed in water (changing the water every few days and kept it on a shelf attached to my lamp so it was receiving gentle bright light often) Once they were well rooted, I planted the healthy and thriving cuttings with the mother plant (usually before watering) and would give it a good drink so I didn’t shock the roots in dry soil.
@tammybooysen2685
@tammybooysen2685 3 жыл бұрын
@@jasmineromero-perez4070 thank you so much for checking in and for the question ! It’s been an experimental journey, especially with the mealy bugs, nevertheless, I am super grateful and happy that my pothos is now thriving and putting out new growth! If I could recommend anything, I would say to plant the rooted cuttings into either already wet but not soaked soil so the roots are entering a semi-familiar environment or water the soil after planting the cuttings. I have heard people try the method of adding soil directly to the water and build it up until it is potted. Some pothos cuttings have benefited from adding soil directly to the water but for me personally, I would be mindful of potential root rot because it might clog the roots from receiving oxygen, therefore, I suggest to aerate the soil! ( I’m going to have to try this method out for myself to see if it can be an alternative planting option for me.) I like to pot cuttings and mother plants in nursery pots so they can drain excess water when watering and aerate more confidently than the plant being directly potted into a decorative/cover pot with no drainage holes. Keep the cuttings in bright indirect light so they can continue to photosynthesize and encourage and put out new and healthy growth ! Happy planting (:

You mentioned that the more rooted one was “grown in a different environment”. Could you explain what kind it was? In a window sill, in shade, warm, etc.? I have had mine in water for alil while now and mine don’t root as quickly as yours! Thanks!
@FKA_URBANLOGIC
@FKA_URBANLOGIC 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Great question! The differences in environment were relatively minor. I had both of them near a west-facing window. The one with the longer roots had more exposure to a slightly brighter light, while the one with the shorter roots was in the shade of another plant, a bit further from the window. Additionally, I was *much* more consistent with the water changes on the jar with longer roots! Other than that, the rest of the conditions were the same. Some cuttings will take a while to root, and that's okay! As long as you keep up with basic care needs, your cuttings will show their gratitude with some fine and well-developed leaves. Not all cuttings are made equal, lol. I hope that this answered your question! Just keep at it! :)

QUESTION‼️ so i have a pothos with extensive roots that has been in water its whole life. would you suggest the same method in regards to transplanting into soil? or will it be unhappy with the new environment? thanks!!
@FKA_URBANLOGIC
@FKA_URBANLOGIC 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Great question. I don't have any definitive answer to that, just an educated guess! I would say that, as long as you introduce it into its new environment correctly, and stick to an adequate watering regimen, it should be able to transition well into soil. You want to take the best care to reduce the 'shock' from the transplant, which would be a more likely culprit of any complication. Give it a nice housewarming into its new home! I hope that this helps!

Is it normal for the roots to turn brownish and fuzzy? I have been good about changing the water almost every day and using a clean mason jar each time (so I reduce the risk of mold) but the roots still turn brown. I have two glasses of cuttings in different locations and both are that way. Thanks in advance!
@FKA_URBANLOGIC
@FKA_URBANLOGIC 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! That's an excellent question. While I can't definitively answer that (There's so many possible causes!), I can say that it's *usually* a normal occurrence. The fuzziness can come from root hairs or even mycelium (both beneficial to the plants and its roots). As for the brownish color, as long as it isn't root rot (You can easily tell if you notice yellowing leaves or weak/mushy roots), it's usually also normal. You may even want to gently run your fingers throughout the roots, to see if it's just algae covering the roots (This would sometimes happen to me!). As long as your plant isn't showing any signs of hurting, you should be good to go! I hope that this helps!

Hi, I moved a set of cuttings from water to soil twice. Each time, the leaves turned yellow then died one by one. As soon as one died, another one started to get yellow. Any thoughts on what's going on or how I can troubleshoot this? I appreciate any advice you can offer. Thanks!
@FKA_URBANLOGIC

Hi! I'm sorry to hear that... There's a few possibilities! It could perhaps be that the roots aren't established enough to transition into soil! It could also be the case that they weren't receiving water often or thoroughly enough. Those are my best guesses! I really hope that was helpful! Let me know if you have any more questions :) I hope they recover well!

Hello! Thank you for this video! I have a question, I recently moved my pothos from water to soil but it seems to be wilting. One of the cuttings rotted and the other one is struggling. Any recommendations to help it survive?
@FKA_URBANLOGIC
@FKA_URBANLOGIC 4 жыл бұрын
Wilting is usually a sign of weak root systems or under watering! Check under the hood, and make sure your watering the soil until it leaves the drainage hole. Also, make sure the pot is an appropriate size!

How long were the cuttings in water? Mine have onl t been in for like 10 days lmfao but I just want an idea of how long I'll be waiting
@FKA_URBANLOGIC
@FKA_URBANLOGIC 3 жыл бұрын
The reality is that the time varies from person to person! For me, I waited a few months before I felt fully confident (And I still wait this long with current propagation projects). But some people like to use rooting powder to promote faster growth! Regardless, just be there for the ride :) Have confidence in your own ability to know when the time is right

I “killed” my golden pothos by planting the cuttings too deep... (they had no roots) so I cut what I could savage and put them in water to try and save them. Now they have roots but I also know you don’t cover their Rhizome like with some aquatic plants and you just cover the roots :| I did the same with my marble queen but I was luckier. That plant managed to forgive me and still manage to give new growth under so much soil. I have dogged up the cuttings and sorted it out so I should have an even happier plant now :) Edit: just thought I would mention I hadn’t any plants before this, just saw some cuttings on eBay and decided to go green lol but now I been doing my research which is also bad for my pockets

What were the different conditions/environments during propagation that made the Pothos to the right grow more roots??
@FKA_URBANLOGIC
@FKA_URBANLOGIC 4 жыл бұрын
Off of my memory, here are a few conditions of those particular cuttings: 1. Consistent water changes once a week. 2. Leaves had more exposure to bright, indirect light. They were very minor differences that made a huge difference!

My pothos has been underwater for quite a few months now, roots have grown but it only has about 10 of them nowhere near as many as yours did however the roots are very long, It has about 8 leaves. I'm not sure if it is ready to be put into dirt yet, or I should wait until it grows many more roots?
@FKA_URBANLOGIC
@FKA_URBANLOGIC 4 жыл бұрын
Definitely give it some more time to develop a stronger root system! On top of having more roots, make sure that the roots are strong (thick and with length) before transplanting. This gives you the highest chance of success 😊

I guess I'm lazy and a bit inattentive today, but I couldn't find an answer to my question --- do I need to be careful watering now or give some time between waterings? Just wondering since the pothos has been in water so long whether it needs some sort of "breaking in" to the soil (i.e. does it need more water at first to help acclimate)? Any help anyone can give is much appreciated!! Happy planting. Thnx for the vid.
@FKA_URBANLOGIC

It's okay to have those kind of days, haha. My advice to you will be to water the soil thoroughly when you first move it to soil, until the water leaves your pot's drainage hole. This is the "house-warming" that's going to help your plants secure itself in it's new home. After this, you're going to allow the first few inches of soil to dry (Do your finger test!), and then you're going to water it thoroughly again. Repeat this process forever and always with your Pothos plant! Newly planted cuttings don't require any special treatment other than consistency; since they're establishing, they can't afford to go too long thirsty. It'll eventually mature until it develops the hardy qualities of a fully realized Pothos. I hope that this helps! :)

Hello! Question So I had to repot a pothos that I bought with a terrible fungus gnat infestation... when repotted I watered it, and all of a sudden the leaves started to go soft which tells me I must’ve hurt the roots and they are not getting enough water to the plant? Cause I didn’t overwater...just in case I removed some of the wet soil and added dry soil leaving the rootball with the moist soil, and some leaves are slowly making a recovery but the few that weren’t and still were limp, I clipped and put them in water some with a long root other short root already recovering so well in the water... my question is how long should I wait to repot them back in the soil?
@FKA_URBANLOGIC
@FKA_URBANLOGIC 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I'm sorry to hear about your Pothos! I'd advise that you wait until the roots are established (2-3 inches). I don't like to give timelines because every plant grows at a unique rate :) When you finally transplant, ensure that the pot they go into doesn't have too much space! I hope this helped!
