Answer should have been - 2x squared - x - 15 (not plus x) -6x + 5x = -1x

yeah i think he got it wrong, a variable with an exponent keeps its exponent when multiplied with a constant. Here's an example if it helps: 2x^3 * 7 = 14x^3
